Where is his helmet? The one guy behind him is wearing his, although the third guy is also missing headgear.

Is that a Quran behind that bush?
~
Geez Louise, that grunt just used up a few of his nine lives!
Dead Marines tell no tales... get that kevlar on!

Reminds me of my grandpa's friend who had his Helmet Shot Clean Off his head by a Sniper Bullet at Monte Cassino. Didn't Harm him in the least, and he never took his helmet off, aside from a once a week shower, through the rest of the war.

No vest, no lid, no beltkit. Who does he think he is, Rambo?

I think we're giving this soldier to much critizism. He may have been asleep, and his unit was ambushed, so the first thing he did was fire.

Even if that was the case, his mate behind him still had time to kit up.

Maybe he was awake and on watch or something - or paranoid. :book:
I did notice that, it doesn't look like he even has spare ammo, maybe it's in that green thing next to him. Seems a little stupid not to have the helmet on though, especially since that's the most exposed part of his body when in that trench/gully.

Looks more like training IMO...

Uhm, he seems to be wearing a T-Shirt and no helmet as well.
Remember kids, armored troops tire faster in the desert, that's why you send unarmored troops. :idea2:

Yes, but once you make an armourer you can't take away their armour. You'd have to build it in another province to do that.

Look again Hausar :beam:... Right behind the guy's right shoulder is a marine with a helmet.
He was lucky none of those shots hit his head. I bet there were more than one hitting that wall.

Husar is right, there are two other guys in the background. One is on the rock looking down on the fallen marine while the other one (unarmored) ducks for cover.

I may have been an emergency in some compound, you know. Afghan guerilla's usually do hit and run attacks. This may have been one of them. There is no time for every soldier to get all his gear in such situations. For all we know the guy may have been lining up for the showers one minute before this happened.
More importantly, what kind of gun is that? Looks pretty damn bad

No it's a full M-16 with a rail mounting system, (Surefire?) light, and most likely a reflex or red dot scope. No lasers during the day.
Thought it was a bit long for an M-4

That seems the most likely scenario - hit & run. Searching the Rueters photo files got me this page (http://search.us.reuters.com/query/?q=%6d%61%72%69%6e%65%20%61%66%67%68%61%6e%69%73%74%61%6e&st=12&s=USPHOTOS#) showing PanzerJaeger's series, as well as others; most showing fully uniformed Marines on the day of the incident, but also a few pix of squad-sized groups in tee-shirts, possibly doing PT or some other fatigue duty (sweat marks on the shirts), with their weapons nearby, but not in-hand.

That has to be on purpose but this is the wrong thread Sigurd, nice try but I won't cancel our friendship yet...

Oh yes, actually missed that one and only saw the other guy in the background.
HoreTore, the US have many provinces and some of them are quite backwards I heard.
And you know, even if he wore a helmet, a hit in his face would still have killed him, in the end he's playing with his own life anyway so I guess we should leave such decisions to him, maybe this was actually the safer thing to do depending on the situation.

M16A4, not M4.
That's one lucky-@$$ marine, though. Maybe he'll remember to leave the commando stuff to guys like Force Recon and have his helmet with him at all times.
The problem with a helmet is it only stops projectiles to the face after they left the back of the head. If that shot had just been a little higher instead of a lot higher, then a helmet wouldn't have saved him either, I don't recall those helmets covering the eyes, nose and mouth of a soldier.

He probably just had a rock thrown at him. The only ones who have weapons in Afghanistan are the Americans.
And the one who threw the rock was probably just a six year old. Afghanistan only has children.

In combat, remember rule #1, the enemy shoots back too. Soldiers have been neglecting to wear their protective equipment since Vegetius wrote Re Militarum.....and they're still paying for it. The main reason for a helmet is not so much to protect you from a direct hit to the head, although they do sometimes protect you in this way if you are lucky, but rather to protect one from slower moving projectiles, such as fragmentations or flying debris, such as we see in these incredible photos.

Often Husar your posts walk a fine line between sarcasm and humor, splashed with common sense and mastery of the obvious. How it is you have come to this end is a point I reflect on for 2-3 minutes a quarter year.
This post is official notification that you have become my favorite poster from 6:45 am to 7:00am. A full 15 minutes is an achievement Husar, please continue your spectacular run of clarity.
So you just returned to the org to tell me that (again)? :inquisitive:
So you just returned to the org to tell me that (again)? :inquisitive:
My abrupt departure was a necessity due to my prior life as a barbarian.
Upon returning what more appropriate indoctrination then to remind you of how important you are to me for a few minutes a day. Coupled with your mastery of the obvious, my sarcastic wit and both our affinities for proclaiming that our attention to this forum is based on an apathetic precursor, I couldnt think of any better way to come forth again from the shadows.
That and I had 3 minutes to kill before going to the :toilet:
