All right guys, I need your help. As those of you who follow the Queue may know, Mafia VIII is finally nearing the top and will begin within a month.
Most of you know that my previous games have been heavy with tradition and simplicity, with the only special role being a Detective and a simple Mafia vs. Town battle, no distractions, being prevalent. The format definitely works. BUT. I've had some ideas about themes and additional roles and wouldn't mind seeing them put in action. Considering the way Mafia VII ended with several streaks being broken, it might be time for a change.
So that's where you come in. What do you guys want to see: The tried-and-true classic style, or something new and completely different?
Feedback is much appreciated.

I have to say that while I'm new to Mafia, the added twists and turns provided by secret roles do seem to add another layer to the game. While I can see where classic style would be popular, and indeed perhaps even different to the majority of games now, I'd vote the new and different (I'm shallow you see, I like flashy things).
I put it to you also that no matter the results of the above poll, don't tell us what you decide, suspense=good fun!

Old school style is sweet.

I think you go with what you want, if you think it will be balanced, go for it!
I voted Gah because I think you should do what you want.
Though I will add that I'd rather have old school. Most of the games we play have a bunch of roles and it's nice to know we have a simple original mafia game to play.

I'd like to get a taste of the "classic" style.
I figure everyone else can run themes. But it's nice to have one game every once in awhile that "gets back to the basics." :2thumbsup:

Old school. The classic match of minds.
And I may be a bit biased because I want the streak of no mafia wins to begin anew.

The old game has settled into a predictable pattern, with everyone waiting for the detective to reveal, or Kommodus to come up with his findings. This is inherent in the rules, with 2 kills at any time, 1 detective, and no reveals of mafia even after death. To break this pattern, you need to add new ideas that promote more strategic thinking.

That's not true. The pattern of the old games is that the town has to find the mafia by being active, or the lose. Adding additional detective or doctor roles results in less strategy, more reliance on townies with abilities.

I think that there's plenty of games now with all sorts of special rules and creative roles that are bending the limits of what can be considered mafia. What we don't have often enough is a good, ol' style mafia game, and I think you do it best, GH. I voted classic.
I think you should do what you want, but I'd love to have another old school style :2thumbsup:
Voted old school mafia. I've never done one, so I'd be interested.
I like the suspense in the classic game :juggle2:

All right, what about setting? Assuming I stay with classic (still haven't decided), should I keep it in the Frontroom? After a while one tires of writing endless variations on the theme but it is tradition and I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it.
should I keep it in the Frontroom?
How about the Gameroom...

How about the Gameroom...
Ah, but then as Chief of Police you won't be able to play.

Make a back story of Beirut moving to the Gameroom. Doesn't have to be true. :beam:

I think you could keep it simple only adding two to three roles into it, to give it some more complexity without kicking out the old schoolness (if thats a word)

Actually, GH, your time permittin', I'd love you to do one of each as a start and end to the summer season. Start with a classic then throw in your own inventiveness later in the summer.

If the mods and the rest of the people on the queue agree, I think that can be arranged, but we'll see (moving to college in mid-August, so I have no idea how things are going to be after that).
