I'm just curious. What are they and how difficult is the job? :book:

As far as I know, when a place needs moderating, Tosa will contact someone.

Best way to put yourself in a position to be picked is to be a long time and respected member of that area, always be helpful and understanding.

In other words, try to be like Omanes, my ever faithful example of a good orgah!

Mods do not change often, and as a general rule asking for it will only result in you not getting it.

Mods are servants, we are the honoured.

We thank you mods

Yeah, Omanes is one heck of a guy. But my idol would doubtless be Mithrandir. How can a guy moderate a forum and be master of so many camels without cracking?

Not that I'm asking or anything. Working with the Diadochi team is enough of a responsibility at the moment.

Well said and seconded, my friend. :balloon2:

I knew camels would come up somehow.

The other qualification not mentioned by pever is that the prospective candidate must have successfully run a travelling circus whilst writing a doctoral dissertation -- as that's about the only relevant training there is for the position.

What!? Aww, looks like I won't be a moderator for a little while.

Asking can get you places - I got in through requesting a position. It's a matter of, as Ketvit Irae has said in the past, supply, demand and suitability. If a moderator is struggling to move through tons of posts of each day, then somebody who asks and is remotely suitable is likely to be assigned. If the forum has a post once every blue moon, then the chances are that nobody new will get a job there regardless of their suitability for the role. There is a middle ground, but these are the two extreems.

I believe that the criteria of suitability mainly includes being a well known/reputed member of the community you will be staffing. Occasionally moderators which know nothing about the community they are going to be working in are assigned, but they are there due to other characteristics (e.g. an authoritarian veteran ex-Backroom mod may be assigned to a forum suffering a wave of trolls).

My thanks to Tamur for my first good, hard laugh of the week. That's brilliant. :laugh4:

But I digress. Omanes pretty much nailed it on the head: Generally speaking, moderators and assistant moderators are promoted/transferred based on where they're needed and how suitable they are for the job.

Asking can get you places - I got in through requesting a position.
Plus, certain staff members wouldn't stop nagging Tosa & Ser Clegane until you got promoted.

Not that *I* would ever do that, of course. No sir.

This is something I wondered about a while back. Had a nice discussion with one of the mods who answered a few of my questions. I didn't get the impression that asking hurt your chances, but the turnover rate is low and I think they put a lot of thought into who they ask to become moderators.

:clown: Not sure if I can say this without sounding like I'm sucking up, but I always found the moderators here at the org to be a cut above those at the other forums I frequent.

Spartan198

I agree with you, Zim. The great thing about the .Org's mods is that they take part in conversations and discussions, which gives us the opportunity to talk with and get to know them.

Well of course I'm still awesome. It could hardly be otherwise. ~D

Kidding aside, though, it's good to know that I haven't changed much from when I first joined this place six years ago. I'd hate to be the type of person that suddenly thought I was too good for everyone, just because I had "moderator" in my title. ~

I strongly second pev & Zim's sentiments: For me, one of the things I've always liked about the Org is that the staff members here have always been "one of us". I've personally watched a number of folks over the years (including Andres, Banquo's Ghost, frogbeastegg, & Omanes Alexandrapolites) make the transition from being a regular member to the positions they're in now....and they're still the same friendly, good-natured people as when they first joined up.

As Omanes said, it's become a tradition. My memory is admittedly pretty fuzzy on this point, but I believe it evolved from one or more conversations in which moderators were jokingly compared to assassins (given our ability to "silence" people and/or make them "disappear"). It quickly became an institutional running gag to the point where it was officially adopted by the staff.

As a result, members now adopt an assassin's avatar when being promoted to "the green". (You'll notice that even FBE has a Geisha as her avatar.)

I recall the joke, but the avatar was first used around April 2000 iirc.

News Flash
Sarathos was found dead this morning, silencened by large green camel.
He shouldn't of questioned the Mods....never question the Mods......

Seriously, all the .Orgs Forum Amins, Mods and AM's have awesomeness beyond description. You guys/girls keep this place running smoothing for the rest of us just to come on and talk, not realizing how much you guys/girls do. I for one state my appreciation here and now and have, won't and will never said anything ill to any authority on the .Org. Otherwise I will get banned again... :shame:

One thing that does annoy me alittle about the Mods and AM's are how they can be so helpful. This has happened to me once before, I was trying to do something (can't remember what now) but I got all frustrated and annoyed and I explained it all to one of the Mods, and he found the answer in 3 sentences. Curse all you Mods for knowing everything. :clown:

Spartan198

Whlist on the topic of qualifications, what are the criteria for becoming a Senior member, other than time?
Senior member is an honorary position, of which only a few people per year are chosen. I don't quite recall aything beside that at the moment.

pevergreen
06-16-2008, 06:15
Time is not a qualification.

Senior Members, as per the other thread in here if you read it (edit: My mistake, that thread has been archived/deleted), are certain members who the staff of the .org feel have made a large contribution to the .org.

Around a dozen are chosen a year.

How to become one? I honestly have no idea, I'm still hiding in a shack because I know they made a mistake with me :laugh4:

If you wanted to become one, just try to be the best you can be. No one can ask for more. Keep in mind there are a lot of people who are missing it, who definately deserve it. That's being rectified slowly. I guess if there was an influx, it would lose its meaning.

In general Senior Members are just the same as members, just when you see one, you know its probably a good person who will take the time to help you out. Or prove you wrong, as some of the backroom people do :laugh4:

Sarathos
06-16-2008, 07:26
Time is not a qualification.
I disagree.

With time all this flourish. With time wisdom is accumulated. With time your abilities and post count grow. Only with time can you hope to prove yourself. And only with time will you become noticed. Time brings experience, experience is good, and all good things take time.

I haven't seen any Moderators, Assistant Moderators or even Senior Members who have signed up this year. Dare I say time is the only qualification.

Martok
06-16-2008, 07:28
Senior membership is based on the contributions a person has made to the Total War community (and the Org in particular) -- one's length of "tenure" isn't really a factor. People with fewer than 100 posts and/or have been here only 6 months have become senior members, and there are regular members who've been here for years with thousands of posts.

As for myself, it's my belief that I was originally promoted to SM because of my (extremely potent) dromedary-based charisma.

pevergreen
06-16-2008, 07:50
I dont generally like to speak out about it, but I've been placing bets with myself on how long it is until Omanes gets promoted.

I predicted SM within 6 months (done), AM within a year (done).

Thats all I've predicted and all I plan to do.

With time all this flourish. With time wisdom is accumulated. With time your abilities and post count grow. Only with time can you hope to prove yourself. And only with time will you become noticed. Time brings experience, experience is good, and all good things take time.

Read Martok's post, every thread about Senior Members that pops up, and look around at the senior members that are here, and you will be surprised. I personally dont think you should aim for Senior Membership, but other things however...

All too often, those who call others heathens are themselves the unbelievers. So it is with you, Andres, and the rest of your wayward cult. Fear not, though, for the Camel is ever-forgiving of those who, having been blinded by evil, would seek to overthrow Him. Truly, His mercy and compassion are infinite.

Any thread that contains the words "sacred dung" is A-OK in my book. Carry on!

I thought we finally got rid of those filthy camels. Surely you agree that they don't belong in a civilised place like the Org, dear Martok
All hail mighty Andres!

Hold on......

This thread started with a question about Mods and SM's. The Mods and SM's started appearing to see what the fuss was all about. They were seduced by nice words and promises of camels. They stopped paying attention....

Then when all their backs were turned, Dave escaped - just as his post count hit 666-6.

This seems a little bit too much of a coincidence.

Is Dave going to use the power of his 6666 post count to take over Tosa and control of the Org?

Mmmmmmwwwahhhhhhh

Tune in tomorrow when you will hear the Camel god say....

Considering he broke that number to derail a thread in the backroom, i doubt it. He's back to normal.

Yes, but just recently I noticed barocca's Roman general avator, which shows his face clearly, why?

I suppose I should amend my earlier statement to say that members *usually* adopt an assassin's avatar when being promoted to moderator. They're under no obligation to do so, however; it's simply a tradition.

Well, barocca used to be an admin, maybe he didn't get around to changing it after be changed to moderator?
