View Full Version : Blue Screen of Death in XP

Title says it all, I've been suffering of blue screens and follow up restarts of the comp for a while.
Haven't changed any hardware, but several of the screens indicate that it's the graphic card that makes it happen.
Not entirely certain, but it seems to only happen when I'm in XP and not while playing games.
Any tips on how to find out what's wrong and how to fix it?

Well "dirty" downgrading/upgrading of video drivers cause such problems.
Once such BSODs have started -which are not clearly related to some hardware expansion or such- it's hard to bring it back healthy.
Back up as soon as possible and format-reinstall a fresh XP.
Have you checked your event logs for errors?
If you haven't in a while, you may want to clean out your fans and make sure the box has good airflow. Video card crashes can happen frequently when the card starts to overheat. Probably a good tip for everyone here. Summer is coming, blow the dust out of your computer! ~D

After a reformating of the comp I still got the problem, so I assume that it's a hardware problem. Cleaning the comp didn't help.
So to be certain considering that I'm buying a new comp anyway, the problem is with the graphic card, and doesn't have anything to do with the screen correct? Planning to use the old screen that's why I'm asking.

A monitor has nothing to do with IRQ allocations, hence impossible to cause BSoDs. You can rest assured that you can use it.

Reformatting is the easy way out and as you can see it doesn't work where hardware is found to be the culprit. The best way to solve a PC problem is to tackle it directly and not simply reformat, which should be the last resort and not the first.
Write down everything the next time you see the BSoD. Also it is likely that a minidump file was created at crash time, you can analyse these following the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263
Debugging in this way will lead you to the offending piece of hardware/software and save you a lot of time.

Are you running with the right DX? Also are you running DX10 games without the DX9 patch?
