View Full Version : How old are you?
well just wanted to know what is the average age of an EB player
I'll start , I just hope you guys dont start to ignore or put my ideas on 2nd place just because I'm a little "green" ("holy fecal matter"!! I still dont have the influence traits given by age :laugh4: )
Well as a matter of fact I'm only 17 years old...:smash:
I'm one of the youngest people I know that like history so much that they actually like EB
so what about you? roman/not roman brothers!
what are your ages?:2thumbsup:
and finally a toast for EB and the EB team, thanks for making the BEST mod I've ever seen !:cheesy:

I'm 16... Current average ~ 23.0714 (I like to go to 4 decimal places when doing my school work, so why not this too?)...
However, as you guys surely know, the 'mean' average is not he only measurement of centre, and is vulnerable to outliers, like if someone came in here and claimed to be over 50, for example (even MerlinusCDXX's 37 is a bit of an outlier)...
Current median average = 21.5
I might draw up a box plot after we get some more responses...

I also would suggest turning this into a poll, makes the actual statistics much more transparent.
Btw, I'm 18 now and will finish the Spartian Agoge (= school time :yes: ) in about 3 days :2thumbsup:
I think a part of the "older" players simply has not the time or interest in being active in a forums, as they are simply engaged enough with working, having a family and of course playing EB :book:
I for my part know several "elders" who play EB but simply have many other things to do than being active here. They are 44, 44, 56, 57 and one far cross the limit is 83 years old (and yeah, he knows how to use a computer and pwn the world with the Saka Rauka...freaky old guy, but absolutely cool and incredibly fit for his age :smash: )

05-28-2008, 12:48
Ahh,
But I think all this thread will tell us is how old people are who vote in polls on the EB forum, not sadly how old the average age of an EB player is...
I think those polls should not be misinterpreted; people of 40-60 don't have the habit of playing computer games (indeed most of them don't know how to use computers...).
Probably, in the future much more people of 30-60 will play computer games (and EB is a very serious game, which means historians, archaeologist and philologist would enjoy it). Now only the new generations (ok, let's include people under 35) have the habit of playing them.

The computer games, yes I agree to an extent, but knowing how to use a computer?
Dude, seriously... :no:
How do you think such people earn a living - use an abacus?
I think you have to go 60+ to find a large percentage of people who arent computer literate. Even then in certain cultures/countries the majority will still be more than competent.
Eg: my grandmother is writing her life story and emailing bits out to all her mates - and she is 83. :egypt:
And, yes, I am under 35.

Seriously I've been "using" computers longer than 1/2 the people who post on this board have been alive. My first computer was an Apple IIe back in 1983. It was my generation that really started the whole personal computer thing to begin with. :dizzy2: So yeah people 40+ do know how to use computers.
The computer games, yes I agree to an extent, but knowing how to use a computer?

You're right, I exaggerated a bit. But when I say "using computer", I refer to search and download a program, installing it, to post on forums, to solve some basic problems, to turn off firewalls, etc...
Yeah you're right some of them only need to know how to use Word and write and e-mail, but really they don't know how to use a computer.
Anyway forgive me for the misunderstanding.
My dad plays mostly snooker and card games on his computer. He tried fighting a battle once when I left it on Pause. Should have seen my surprise when I came back home and saw a very decent victory there. My mom tried NFSU a few times and wasn't that bad but she's far more into books... So not all old folks are that bad in computer games.
Anyway, I think it's good that kids play this mod. They learn a lot this way. Like for example that Egyptians didn't go to war wearing gold armour. They also will listen more carefully on their history lessons to a teacher telling them about Punic Wars or Diadochi...
This poll tells you:
How old are people that:
- Bought and played RTW in the first place
- Searched on the web for more stuff on this game
- Came to the org and downloaded EB here
- OR: found EB elsewhere (I got my first version from the TWC, for example) and came to the org for other reasons
- Registered, write and stay on a forum where the majority of users seems to be between 20 and 30 (what also requires to be a native English speaker or above average knowledge of English as a second language)
Not surprisingly that you come up with the result that these are people usually between 20 -30. I think the result would be different if EB would be sold regulary in shops and you would check the age of the costumers.
Julius Civilis

52, and counting! But my lovely wife thinks I'm a little kid, playing EB.

This one is important. I know many Spaniard people who loves EB, but look at the forums... from Spain, only Cartaphilus and me. And I can ensure you that there are a lot of fans of EB here in Barcelona.
The problem is that we, the Spaniards, have never been polyglots :laugh4: :oops: .

22 but I've been playing RTW in one incarnation or another since it was released way back in 2004.
The main reason I began playing RTW was because I as really interested in history, although after starting the game I realized historical accuracy wasn't exactly at the top of CA's list :laugh4: As I didn't have internet where I was living at the time I played vanilla for nearly a year until I read about RTR in an issue of PC Gamer, after which I promptly went to a Net Cafe, dowloaded it and installed it. Playing it after vanilla was awesome, but over time I realized it wasn't accurate enough to satisfy my historical hunger. Finally, a few months after RTR I got into EB and haven't looked at vanilla, RTR or any otherRTW mod since.

'Qadim' in maltese is used to describe old thinqs, for example, an old chair = siggu qadim. For people we use 'xih', an old man, or we say 'ghandu hafna zmien', ghandu=he has, hafna=many, zmien=years.
Cheers.

Alexander had conquered the world by the time he was my age. I haven't even conquered my own house: "A man's house is his castle" - HA!
A word of advice to the young men: drink and fight and get laid and smoke ... cigarettes and generally have as much fun as you possibly can - while you're in your teens and early- and mid-20's.
Sometime around age 26-28, you'll sense that something has changed. Then - and only then - should you settle down with a good woman (or man, if that's your thing), and act responsibly.

Be comforted Count Belisarius. I'm 24 and well on way for not even having my own house by that age ;).

That sounds funny. I always thought Maltese was a romance language. But it sounds rather semitic now.

indeed maltese is related to my dialect of arabic...(palestinian arabic to left.)
adeem=qadim
shekh=xih (how is x pronounced here?)
3indo=ghandu
hifne=hafna (in palestinnian=buch, or clump)
zman=zmien (palestinian=time, age)

I found history books for children back when I was in grade 6. It was written in newspaper format, excitingly detailing the Persian Wars and Alexander's conquests in present tense. Yeah, I was so happy. However, it wasn't until grade 8 when I learnt of Gaius Julius Caesar's exploits in Gaul. Too bad it wasn't earlier...

I'm 19, and surprised I didn't answer this poll already (as you can't answer polls after you've answered once). So I thought I'd answered it before, big deal. I'm 19 now. Played EB some three or so years ago first but didn't stick onto it until 1.2. Now all I care for is somehow making mass MP for EB work out with ease-of-use on user end and making films using rpy files of EB (which there'd be more of if we had MP games), + making repository of MP games.

Why on earth should we laugh? I started out my various carreers as a carpenter apprentice in my father's company (he was apprenticed to his father, etc for 3-400 years back). My father emphasised quality and is the sort of man people will actually follow to death, so many of the old journeymen working for him had done so for 16- 23 years and where all pretty old. But these old fellows really mastered their craft at a level that young hotheads could only dream about. The same in my current craft, history. Yes, we young fellows are not stuck in our ways and can thus make new conclusions from the sources, but we stand on the shoulders of giants; when I attended at Saxo- conference at Uni of Copenhagen a couple of months ago, I was much impressed by the encyclopedic knowledge of the sources all the old guys there possessed, with 50 years of studying them behind their belts they knew everything and all theories concerning them, and cooperation between these old near-death (some of them are) guys and us youngsters (says the 39 YO, but for a historian that is young) can yield so much.
Viking fighting... yea the young "hungry" guys are good and fast and can reach far, but the oldies can pull out some trick 98% of the time and whip them still (I guess I am an old grumpy fart as well with 17 years of fighting under my sword and spear).
So, old not = bad.
And thanks for risking your neck in Viet'Nam, this is not the place to debate it, but I for one is thankful.
