View Full Version : Relieving besieged allies...

...is a very bad idea, because if you defeat the besieging common enemy, you'll find yourself at war with your (former) friend.

Except maybe with Crusades/Jihads, I'm not sure.

Absurd!

I don't think that's right - I've had allies help me relieve a seige and we never fought each otehr.

Are you sure you are actually allies? - if you're neutral then yes, you will fight.

No, that doesnt sound right. Ive not had that happen with allies, only neutrals.

Hmmm... maybe they simply attacked me on the same turn. Must check this out again.

Apologies if I'm spreading misinformation.

No need to apologise - lots of things happen in MTW without being noticed - war is often one of them!! lol

So if you don't end up at war with the beseiged faction, your army just ends up sitting in their territory? That seems like an odd state of affairs. Or do you get bumped back to the territory you attacked from?

Back you go to where you were.

Generally its the castle owner/province owner difference that causes you to sadly go to war with the wrong person.

Yeah, what he said. If you are allied with the country that is under siege you will go in beat out the invaders and then return from whence you came. The more interesting scenerio which has been covered in other posts is when two friendly armies invade a neutral or enemy territory on the same turn, in that case you will fight together but whomever has the larger army will occupy the province. Hopefully I got this right and didn't misstate anything. If the occupied province is neutral and you go in and 'rescue' the besieged I think it will be an act of war and you will end up taking the place of their former besiegers(?).

I've tried several times to rescue an ally that was besieged, I defeated the invaders, and ended up being the one laying siege to the castle! Of course, my ally was then at war with me.

I've done this many times as the Italians for the Byzantines. The Turkish were beating them rather badly, and had their king under siege in a castle. I sent in an army, defeated the Turkish, and after that my army went back to the province I came from. I got a message saying that the Byzantines were grateful for my help. We stayed allies. My question is, does helping them out like this strenghten your alliance with them, making it less likely that they will attack you?

This is what I thought happened to me as well! Perhaps what happened is that our Allies canceled their alliance with our countries on the same turn we tried to help them, making us neutrals?

I know that if you and an ally attack the same province same turn, there's an allied attack, and biggest army wins the province. Really pissed me off, because I had spent a long time building up that army to attack my enemy...

In such a case, in a manually-directed battle (instead of autocalc) can you control your ally's forces? If so, I'd send them in to attack the enemy, leaving my troops safe....

no - an allied force on the battlefield is controlled by the AI.
you CAN jsut let it do it's thing and then attack the enemy remnants! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hmmm... that's odd... because I have relieved the Pope numerous times. Each time he thanked me with 1000 florins. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
