Hi all.

I'm getting a new computer very soon, which will actually have some somewhat major gaming capabilities. Does anyone have an RPG that they would recommend over others?

What have you played before? Are you only interested in new games to show off your machine, or less visually-impressive, older games as well?

:inquisitive: I'm looking for a good game. Graphics are nice, but gameplay est numero uno.

Knights of the Old Republic
Baldur's Gate series
Neverwinter Nights series
(coming soon) Mass Effect

Other than Mass Effect and Neverwinter Nights 2 (+MotB), there aren't really many RPGs that are graphic and gameplay heavy.

And just as a forewarning, keep Mass Effect copyright BSing out of this thread. We have a thread dedicated to that discussion already.

Lol when I first saw the title and read a bit i was like... whattt? Is the a new meaning to RPG(first thought was Rocket Propelled Grenade, then RPG Computer towers. lol) Anyways a good RPG thats gameplay heavy and graphical heavy. I kind of like oblivion, though i believe now its getting outdated. Ohh and another good game which may not be the best graphics in town but still has me come back for more and more is Dungeon Siege II

Off the top of my head...

Good RPGs with old graphics:
Fallout
Fallout 2
Planescape Torment
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 (and expansion packs)

Good RPGs with moderate graphics:
Vampire: Bloodlines
Morrowind
Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
Neverwinter Nights 1, but only with the expansion packs.
Neverwinter Nights 2, expansion pack highly recommended.

Good RPGs with new graphics:
Jade Empire
The Witcher
Mass Effect (from what I've been told, haven't played it)

I play a modded version of Oblivion. I wouldn't recommend the vanilla version on a bet because it is all show and no gameplay, but with the right mods the gameplay can be excellent. Key thing to know is that it has plenty of content, so content adding mods are superfluous.

Tincow pretty much listed all of the good classic RPG style ones. Oblivion should be thrown in there too, but has a drastically different playing style from traditional RPGs and even Morrowind to an extent.

I've found it pretty dissapointing that that small list there contains every top notch RPG in the past decade; I guess they just don't sell as much as other genres, FPS especially

Do yourself a favour and buy Anachronox. It's not a particularly pretty game (Quake 2 engine) and a bit old, but it has style. The art design really shines, makes the most of the graphics, and the real star is the scripting. Great story, great characters, a long campaign and plenty of memorable moments. Kept me entertained for ages, and it's an oft overlooked game.

Gothic, all of them.

I have to agree with Anachronox as well. Funny stuff, though not as funny as the humor found in Sam & Max. It's pretty slow going in, but eventually it gets to be very fun.

I've played every game mentioned here except the Witcher (waiting for the free upgrade pack) and the Gothic series (started Gothic II gold now), and can recommend any and all of them without qualms.

The fallout duo are good games and well worth playing, however there's a word of warning which I feel needs to be given with them and seldom is. They don't always get along with modern hardware. I tried to play these a bit ago and found myself plagued with issues. The screen kept going completely black every couple of minutes, meaning I had to scroll around to force it to re-draw the graphics and restore my view. The game crashed repeatedly, and eventually it crashed and corrupted my savegames. I couldn't complete either. If you've still got your old PC try to play them on that instead.

To join the Anacronox reminiscence, Anacronox was an awesome game. Pig ugly even back in ye day, and sporting what was once a rare art styling in games (westernised manga) it shone in every other area.

What other RPG lets you have a grouchy old man with a huge beard and a walking stick on your battle line up? Grumpus was a permanent fixture on my team, and he yammered his way past many obstacles. Does anyone remember what the world (yes, world, as in an entire planet plus population) which joined your party was called? It’s been so long since I played it …

The other main aspect I remember Anacronox for so fondly was a certain BIG surprise in the plot.

Ah! Yes, of course! Democratus, the name was a perfect fit. Can't believe I forgot it now.

I have a hankering for a replay. Drat.

I think I have my disk around here somewhere. I'll have to dig around and find it again.

I definitely agree with Kekvit Irae when recommending Knights of the Old Republic (especially number 1, number 2 isn't that great I though) also Bauldar's Gate, great party RPG what rather good graphics. If you want a top-class RPG I would go with the Witcher, but wait for the upated version.

Jade Empire, Bioware at their finest.
Knights of the old republic 1 & 2. Although it has to be noted that 2 reeks of Lucas Arts telling Obisian that they were done NOW!!!! :whip:
Oblivion, plus all of it's content. You can buy a GOTY edition with the Knights of the nine quest line and the Shivering Iles expansion. I can also recommend the Frostcragged Spire and Dunbarrow cove content packs. On the negative side it has a level scalling system that is crap. But the PC version can be modded so that it is less ruthless.

In place of 'ruthless' I would use 'pointless'. The scaling system in vanilla Oblivion boils down to every battle being exactly the same since you are always matched against an equal opponent. As you progress through levels the entire population goes with you. Tough creatures appear out of thin air, lesser creatures become spontaneously extinct.

That's why there are mods out there. One of them scales battles to a point, so you wont end up with super awesome bandits with glass armor every time you step outside the city with a high-level character. It definitely adds atmosphere to the game.

I think I posted earlier somewhere a glowing recommendation of properly modded Oblivion. I use Fran's overhaul mod for the world and AF leveling for characteristics and think Oblivion is one of the greatest RPGs ever. The content is terrific and the gameplay is repairable.

Oblivion is quite fun to play if you stay at level 1. I have a level 1 character with 30+ hours played, all the main storyline finished, and working through shivering ilses. I'm a combat beast, and nearly unkillable due to my Imperial Dragon armour from beating the game. Its complete junk if you actually level up, but at level 1, its great.

Anyways, Age of Conan is quite a fun MMO. Free for all pvp, yes please.

If you don't want an MMO, Baldur's Gate 2 is the height of the RPG genre, both in storytelling and gameplay. It has yet to be matched, and likely never will. The graphics are simple, yet effective, and don't suffer from being dated. There is no excuse for not playing this one, and if you do not enjoy it, RPGs are not for you.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is also a great game with a ton of content, and a fun action based combat system.

Okay, I've got an issue. I purchased KOTOR 2, and after installing it, I received an error message and the program cut out when I tried to play it. Would anyone here know what the deal is?
