“We saw with Beyond Good & Evil that so many customers were extremely happy with the game,” said Guillemot. “We had a different audience at that time. We had more core gamers than casual gamers than we have today.

"We think the game was probably a little too difficult for the general gamers at that time. We’re going to make it more accessible and make sure that it’s really done for the new generation that’s come into videogames.”

Let's hope he was speaking French and the translation was dodgy. Or he was misrepresented. Or has confused BG&E2 with something else.

BG&E is the poster child for easy, accessible, and perfectly pitched learning curve and progression. One of the most repeated criticisms of the game was that it was on the easy side.

BG&E didn't sell because it was released in a Christmas filled with excellent, high scoring and selling games. It was released with barely a wimper. IIRC many of the reviews had come and gone over a month before it hit the shelves, so people looked for it, couldn't find it, and forgot about it. It was released with box art which didn't stand out. It was poorly explained, and at first glance appeared to be one of those dreadful kid's cartoon junk games. There wasn't much in the way of previews either.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time came out that same christmas. It didn't sell. They addressed the 'reasons' for that in the sequel. Warrior Within is generally regarded as the worst of the trilogy primarily because of those 'solutions'.

Bad quote? Got to be. Otherwise he's saying that people loved the game so they are dumping the audience who brought the first game and spent years asking for this second one, and chasing after another that they consider to have the IQ and manual dexterity of a potted plant.
