Yes you read it right, the pope in my MTW game is an atheist! How's that for strange and random occurances. What next, a heretic pope? An inbred pope? A crack brained barking mad pope? Very funny! I love the way vices often make no sense!

I hate to break it to you, but in the Middle Ages many Popes had a religion of "power" rather than "christianity." When you have primogeniture (oldest male child inherits everything), the younger sons could either become wandering knights, work as guards in cities, or join the clergy. And the clergy offered the safest path to power.

The reforms since the advent of Protestantism went a great way to removing the more cynical of power-seekers.

One Pope had "I'd rather have a Sword than a Bible" as his motto (that's the gist of it, anyway). I can't remember his name but he was a mean warrior who fought (literally, in armour and on horseback) long and hard to dominate Italy.

there was a actually a counter-pope (raised by the French nobility I think) called Johan XXIII who was a former pirate and simply paid for the title!!
His election was annulated later, that`s why there could be another Johan XXIII (in the 19th century).
