I would like to report a robbery. Someone stole my 3rd command star between 1189 and 1191. I earned that sucker!

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=193&id=4569

Upon further investigation, I think the Megas took it. Flyd's 1190-7 save had it, then it vanished with Zim's 1191 post. :help:

Ammonathas has lost a command star from being in the field too long. It will come back if he hangs out in a city for a while.

In fact, a lot of the people with armies that have been out of cities a while are getting nasty morale traits, Ammonathas is the furthest gone but Arintheos, Erotikos, and Kousinos all have the traits as well.

1191 Megas Report

Military:

There is little news here, as lack of funds continues to prohibit recruitment. However, I have been able to take measures to save costs. An unled army in Egypt was disbanded, as was Methodios' old fleet, which had been laying idle in the Red Sea.

We seem to be holding on in the Levant, and having received reinforcements I had hired in Acre, I believe Senator Theo will be able to make some progress against the Turks, at least as regards Damascus.

Economic:

Cost cutting measures have finally started to have an effect. We posted the smallest deficit of the last few seasons, and there is some evidence that recapturing Damascus would end the financial bleeding of the Empire. Combined with the hoped for destruction of Erotikos and Kousinos' armies and subsequent demilitarization of the area around our capital, we should be posting profits again very soon.

*The Bastard Rebellion:

I am sure you have all heard that Senator Kousinos, formerly known mostly as Erotikos lapdog after having followed him across half the Empire, is now claiming that he is the rightful Emperor on the grounds of his belief that he is the illegitimate son of Anna Komnenos. I am not sure if it is more amusing that he believes we will believe such a preposterous thing of the princess, or that he believes that if we supposed this story to be true that his being an illegitimate son somehow strengthens his Imperial ambitions. I leave that to you to judge.

Erotikos and Kousinos are now positioned fairly close to the strait across from our capital. They have two large armies. Ioannis Komnenos III bravely waits for them with an army of his own. He does not face the traitors alone, however. His father Isaakios has positioned his fleet at the strait blocking any crossing this season. No doubt they will bribe merchants and ferries to take them across to the capital, but they are briefly delayed.

I suggest we all say a prayer to the almighty to protect these two men as they prepare to combat Erotikos and the wouldbe usurper.

OOC: TinCow approved the maneuver to block the straits, but it only lasts a single turn. I was asked to move Isaakios to the strait at the beginning of this turn.

* I assumed since this word shows up in the game itself (for instance, in Magnentios' title when I played him) it would not be inappropriate for the forum. I figured it would convey Arintheos' bias in his report on the rebellion. If I was mistaken perhaps TinCow could change it to the "Illegitimate Son's Rebellion".

Veteran Warrior ancillary given to Ioannis Komnenos III (Ignoramus) in accordance with the will of the late Basileus.
Chivalrous Knight, Mercenary Captain and Spymaster ancillaries given to Arintheos Voutoumitis (Zim) in accordance with the will of the late Basileus.
Georgios Angelos (Tristan de Castelreng) moved to Gaza, his chosen starting location.

Note: Isaakios Komnenos (flyd) is currently blocking the the Bosphorus crossing with his fleet. For ingenuity, I have allowed him to make this move and for it to serve as a temporary blockade of one turn. No hostile army may attack Isaakios Komnenos while he is on his fleet, nor may they cross the Bosphorus at that point FOR THIS TURN ONLY. After this turn, he may be attacked at will and the Bosphorus may be crossed, regardless of his position. Please note, this blockade only applies to armies that Isaakios Komnenos (flyd) is currently at war with.

1192-1193 Megas Report

OOC: Bolded sections contain the gist of the report for those who'd prefer to forgo my boredom induced style change for this one. :clown:

The History of the Byzantine Empire: The Years 1192-1194
A report by Matthew O'Connor
Grade: C-

The last decade of the twelth century came off to a rough start for the young new Emperor Ioannis Tagaris. It was bad enough to have his father's death followed by the denigration of his memory and questioning of the legitimacy of Ioannis' claim to the throne discussed openly in the Magnaura as if a matter no more important than the weather. It was worse when Sophianos Kousinos claimed to be the Princess Anna's son and he and Ioannis Erotikos declared war on just about all family members with the slightest claim as heirs. Of course they had to have two very large armies. And of course the Empire had to be in a two front war against the Turks and Venetians while its economy imploded and the debt sky rocketed.

One would think that these difficulties would be enough for any new Emperor to face, but in 1192 the fates decided he had it too easy and
in 1192 all hell broke loose. In the Hippodrome the Caesar Adronikos Komnenos declared his theory that the throne was something to be won by the worthy and that as he had yet to do great things Ioannis Tagaris was not worthy. With this declaration he seceded from the Empire with much of Georgia and the Northern Anatolian coast, with Tbilisi as his capital. He said he would rule an Empire based in the east.

Before Tagaris could even answer this proclamation another came, this one made in the Magnaura by the nephew of the departed Emperor Ioannis Komnenos, the third Komnenoi to share that man's name. Ioannis Komnenos III declared that the Basileus' will had left the Western half of the Empire to him. He was now seceding with the core Imperial territories of Nicaea, Dardennellia and, worst of all, took for his own capital the ancient Imperial city of Constantinople. There was now a fourth claimant to the throne, and every single one with large armies.

At least there was some good news to come out of the reports of 1192-3. While the nominally neutral Megas Arintheos Voutoumatis might harbor some sympathy for the rebels, the faltering Imperial Economy left no money to recruit troops. Ioannis Tagaris' movement of the capital and Magnaura to Jerusalem was a wise decision, greatly increasing unrest in Constantinople. The citizens could bear an Empire rife with division, but not the lowered status of their city. Constantinople rioted. Loyalists also rose up in Nicaea, Yerevan, and Trebizond. Best of all the move would ensure the people of relatively newly conquered Jerusalem would stay loyal. Less promising were the riots caused by partisans of the rebels in the so far loyalists in Thessalonike and Bucharest. Lowered taxes would be needed to appease them.

All was not lost on the Venetian and Turkish fronts, either. In the east Senator Theo, member of the Order, marched towards Edessa, while in the west Senators Ammonathas and Helarionas raced to Zagreb to fight the Venetians.

Across the Empire, all held their breath to see what news 1194 might bring.

1194 Megas' Report

Military: As has been the norm there was no recruiting this turn. There was some rearranging of forces, however. Helarionas gained some garrison troops for use in his fight against the Venetians. Zagreb now has three spies in it waiting to open the gates for the first Romans to reach the city.

The captain led troops north of Ammonathas' army were told that the cause they had been sent for was unjust. With the Basileus' and Megas' opposition to the war against Appionas it took little to convince their loyal captain to disperse his men. This will also save on upkeep.

I myself have marched somewhat northwest of Constantinople so that if needed I can prevent an attack on Senator Appionas. I implore Ammonathas Kalameteros to end his war against that innocent man. Basileus Ioannis Tagaris and I disagree on much, but we are of one mind concerning this pointless attack on a Roman who has done none harm. Bucharest has been secured so the petty rationalization used for the war has ended.

Economy:

With the dispersal of that small army we saved on upkeep this last season. I was also able to rearrange our merchants for optimal efficiency with the help of a few of my aides. They are now making slightly more money. However, the loss to revolt of Trebizond and Yerevan ,the citizens of which apparently couldn't decide whether they preferred to stay with Caesar Andronikos or Basileus Tagaris and instead declared independence, hurt our income.

Riots ended in Thessalonike and Bucharest.

Updates: The War of Marching Around a Lot

Erotikos and Sophianos continue to march around a lot, turning back northwest up the road they were going east on a turn before and west two turns prior. Are they going to move on Constantinople again, or maybe Nicaea? Maybe straight past those settlements to Sinope? Perhaps they wish not to be intercepted by the Caesar Andronikos and have decided to turn away from him long before they'd have a chance to meet. Or maybe they just enjoy stretching their legs and running in circles.

Caesar Andronikos has added his own marching in an attempt to match that of Erotikos and Sophianos, attempting to march in their direction to have a battle with them. Sadly he has much work to do to catch up.

I possibly throw my own hat in the ring with my march towards Sofia, although it might be argued that since I'm doing so as part of a separate conflict that my march is ineligible. Still, I think I will allow it, as technically I am part of the War of Marching Around a Lot due to my being at war with the instigators of the conflict.

Who will win the marching title? It's hard to say. Erotikos' team has a long head start with their march across Anatolia, and turning back to move in the opposite direction not once, but twice is a shrewd move, allowing much more marching. On the other hand they are in great danger of eventually doing something within the marches of the next few turns, a disadvantage not shared by our Caesar who is still far from any potential action and will assuredly get many more marches in. Then there's the upstart, me, frankly the underdog as I have no long distances to go and hope to do no more than a single turnaround, preferably away from Sofia and towards another enemy.

Don't think this contest is over yet, there is much more marching around to do.

~;)

1195-1196 Megas' Report

Military:

No recruitment. However, we have some great news in the victory of Senator Theo over the Seljuk Sultan. The way to Edessa now lies clear. Meanwhile Ioannis Tagaris has sieged Damascus, which will soon hopefully be brought back into the Empire.

Tortosa has been sieged by a small Turkish army but I have no doubt Grandmaster Vartholomaios Ksiros will be able to ride south and rescue it.

Economic:

Same old, although the deficit does seem to have decreased some. Hopefully the anticipated taking of Damascus, Edessa, and hopefully soon Zagreb will turn things around.

Other news:

The rebellions and Civil Wars remain cold, although they will hopefully be resolved one way or another soon. Sadly, Senator Hypatios Machonos has passed away. I cannot say who he left his settlement to. Hopefully the protosecrates can help with that.

We have the addition of two new royal family members this season. Ioannis Komnenos and his lovely wife Theodora had a baby boy, Vaseleios Komnenos, while Avgoustinos Cavasilis and his wife Rosanna also had a boy, Iustinos Cavasilis.

And we've got a defensive battle for one of our new players.

mini, you're up. The Emperor has left you to fight off a force attacking Tortosa. Sensing an opportunity, a mid sized Turkish relief army has comes to save their settlement of Damascus. Joining them is the city's garrison itself. Luckily the Emperor left you with the bulk of his army, many very high quality soldiers. Together the Turkish forces have far greater numbers but the quality of their troops is suspect. Many predict even odds (1:1 on the battle screen) but given the lack of strategy our enemies show on the battlefield (stupid AI), the low quality of their soldiers, and the fact that their armies will not enter the field in the same spot, the battle is less worrying than might be expected.

1195-1196 Megas' Report

Military:

No recruitment. Bad news this year, with the young Senator Iosif being bested by the Turks, who needed more than twice Iosif's numbers to beat a Roman army.

At least Tortosa was freed. Ioannis Tagaris may be a much better man than I had thought. Saving a province that belongs to someone at war with him, and doing so because it's better for the Empire is quite admirable.

Economic:

Same old, although the deficit continues to decrease. With Edessa and Zagreb soon to fall at least, this should change.

Other news:

A treaty has been announced between Ioannis Tagaris and Ioannis Komnenos III.

I'll be out a few minutes but consider the save reopened if anyone can answer my question in the OOC thread. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I'm guessing I can't hold the save forever. :clown:

I don't recall us having to pause the game for the battle we thought was going to occur between Helarionas and Andreas, or the pvp battle before that. Tentatively reopening the save, although if anyone has a move that would interfere with or change the battle I'd like them to run it by TinCow first.

The game may still be used, but Andronikos Komnenos (woad&fangs) and Theophylaktos Petzeas (Ibn-Khaldun) cannot be moved. In addition, the game cannot be advanced beyond the current turn until the PvP battle is over.

hmmz

I have no acces to the game right now. I recall i had some movement points left over, as I was trying to reach Theophylaktos Petzeas (Ibn-Khaldun) with the remnant of my army.
Can anyone check if Petzeas is within my marching distance, and march me there? Or as close as I can get :)

Yes, as long as the moves do not (1) alter the armies involved in the PvP battle in any way and (2) do not end the turn.

LOTR-1198-8 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/local_links.php?action=jump&catid=199&id=4682)

Theophylaktos Petzeas' (Ibn-Khaldun) army has been completely destroyed and Theo has been killed. The survivors that surrendered to Andronikos Komnenos' have laid down their arms and disbanded.

Andronikos Komnenos' (woad&fangs) losses:
1 unit of 50 Dismounted Byzantine Lancers
1 unit of 90 Trebizond Archers
1 unit of 90 Town Militia
All cavalry except one full unit of Byzantine Cavalry. While only half a unit survived in the battle, the rest have 'recovered' from their wounds. The unit has also gained a chevron of experience from the battle.

The siege of Edessa has been lifted. IC, this is because the Turks were able to bring in supplies while the Byzantine armies were busy fighting each other.

A total of 6 RBGs have been queued up for Ibn-Khaldun in Antioch and the nearby cities.

Andronikos Komnenos' (woad&fangs) men found a fine suit of armor on the battlefield. One of the smiths in the baggage train has altered it so that it fits its new owner perfectly. This suit could very well save his life in the battles to come. (Gained the Fine Armor ancillary, +4 HPs.)
Andronikos Komnenos' (woad&fangs) has gained the trait Known by the Byzantines (+1 Command)

The game is now unfrozen and the may proceed as normal.

1198-1199 Megas Report

The last fifteen years have been less than pleasant. Progress in our external wars have stalled. Our economy has as well, with huge deficits. Multiple provinces have rebelled, and we have several claimants to the throne, and no satisfactory solution for most of the claimants has been found. I have tried to do what is best for the Empire, providing arms for those who were to take them up against Venice and the Turks, and protecting Constantinople when I would rather be fighting in Italy.

It has been an honor to serve you all, although I feel I have failed you. About the only highlight of my term was the turning away of Erotikos and his lackey from our capital, but next to the low points it seems little to boast of.

I give my best wishes to whoever takes up the challenge of being Megas next. At the very least, he can't do any worse than I have.

OOC: With the beginning of a new session the save is closed, though free to look at.
