This thread is for annual summaries of in-game events by the Megas Logothetes, and reports by the Senators on actions they have taken with the saved game.

Other than the Megas Logothetes, Senators should only post in this thread to say they are taking the save, to upload a new save, and to report whatever actions they have taken with the save.

The final starting save for LotR is now ready. You can find it here (http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/LOTR-1081-Start.zip). The treasury has been reset to 10,000, the avatars have been moved to their indicated starting locations, the titles have been given to the proper avatars, and the excess avatars have all been killed off. If you think I made an error, please PM me about it, do not post it in here.

All avatars are located in the places last indicated by the respective players. Unless you can prove that I made an error, you will not be allowed to change your starting location, you will simply have to move to your desired destination yourself. I was unable to find starting locations for the following people: rossahh, Smowz, Byblos, Ichigo, AussieGiant, and 00jebus. I have placed these 6 avatars in what I think are logical starting locations. The first four have been placed in the city that belongs to the Comes who leads their various Houses. The last two are not part of any House, and have been placed in Constantinople. The complete list of starting locations is:

Aleksios Komnenos - Constantinople
Makedonios Ksanthopoulos - Nicosia
Iakovos ek Kallipoleos - Nicosia
Armatos ek Naksou - Nicosia
Nathanail ek Korinthou - Nicosia
Koulianos Vourzos - Nicosia
Vissarionas ek Lesvou - Nicosia
Vartholomaios Ksiros - Nicosia
Kosmas Mavrozomis - Athens
Hypatios Machonios - Athens
Ioannis Kalameteros - Athens
Zigavinos Vasilakios - Athens
Nevoulos ek Philadelphias - Athens
Anastasios Neokaisareitis - Thessalonica
Ioannis Komnenos - Nicaea
Pavlos Chrysovergos - Nicaea
Ioannis Kantakouzinos - Constantinople
Tarasios Sarantinos - Nicaea
Aleksios ek Ikoniou - Corinth
Khristophoros Diogenis - Corinth
Philippos Eirinikos - Corinth
Savvas ek Militou - Corinth
Michail Arianitis - Thessalonica
Efstratios Monomachos - Thessalonica
Markianos Ampelas - Thessalonica
Apionnas Vringas - Constantinople
Methodios Tagaris - Thessalonica
Lisas Attaleiatis - Constantinople

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1081

There is no signifigant news. Strategoi may conduct moves (OOC: The save is open for the 24 hour movement period).

Please remember that movement of fleets and any troops not in an assigned garrison or army is strictly the province of the Logothete.

The question of Durazzo will be resolved once I give my own orders. Any Strategoi making an independent move on the settlement will be declared an outlaw and subject to swift Imperial justice. Consider this a final warning.

OOC: Use TC's latest save (http://www.totalwar.org/patrons/pbm/LOTR-1081-Start.zip) to start. If unfamiliar with the rules, FAQS and procedures, please review before taking the save. If you have any questions, please post in the OOC thread.

Post in this thread when you take the save. Please compress the new save before uploading it, and then post a link to the new save in a new post in this thread. Please summarize what you did with the save in that post.

To reiterate:

Other than the Megas Logothetes, Senators should only post in this thread to say they are taking the save, to upload a new save, and to report whatever actions they have taken with the save.

Have at it. :knight:

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1083

1081 was a year of frenetic action.

Domestic Affairs:

Buildings and recruitment were started in all settlements. This will not last as we will soon expend our monetary reserves. Our Empire, to be blunt, currently has a poor economy. I ask all Senators to review their taxation and build policies to help alleviate this. Unfortunately this means requests for mercenaries will be denied.

I must commend Comes Markianos Ampelas. Of the Senators in position to pursue the Patriarch's prize, he was the only one who had the sense to build roads in his city first. You may run your holdings as you wish, however without roads, trade and military movement will suffer.

Our agent has moved north to monitor Scopia and Sofia. I hesitate to send our lone priest into heathen territory without some compatriots. For now he is trying to spread the word near Nicaea, a settlement in need of it. Our lone Merchant has been dispatched toward the Levant to take his place in the spice trade.

The Council of Nobles has asked that we take Canakkale. If we do so within 15 years, we have been promised 2500 ducats.

A 45 year old suitor has asked for my daughter's, Anna, hand in marriage. I declined.

Foreign Affairs:

In order to shield my daughter from middle-aged suitors, I have sent her north to negotiate with the Magyars. It will be a few years before she makes contact. I have begun the recruitment of a diplomat to spare Anna further trips.

Military Affairs:

The fielding of proper armies will take time. There are no Castles capable of producing bowmen or heavy cavalry. Our only castles are in Corinth and Nicosia and they are far removed from many parts of the Empire. I will work to rectify this, but even Royal armies will take time to fully form. Since we have to chosen to expand immediately we must do the best with what we have.

Imperial Army:

I have begun marching on Sofia. As requested, Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos is accompanying me.

Order of St. John:

The Order has begun landing in the Levant, west of Antioch.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias have departed Athens by ship and are heading towards Rhodes.

The Komnenodoukai:

Caesar Ioannis is marching west from Nicaea towards Canakkale.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senator Philippos Eirinikos have led men from Corinth north and met up with two units of troops there. They are now ready to drive on Arta. (OOC: They were chosen because the other two avatars in Corinth had reduced MP)

The Tepaki:

The entire House, well all two of them, has galloped west towards Durazzo from Thessalonica.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris is a bit ahead of the Tepaki however, as he is a Drillmaster.

For 1083, The Order of St. John is granted use of the fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean while the Asteri are granted the use of the fleet on which some of their nobles are embarked. (OOC: The House leaders or their designated proxies can use them during free movement)

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1084

1083 was a year of preperation and marching.

Domestic Affairs:

Buildings and recruitment continues in all settlements, except for empty Nicosia which can recruit no more men at the moment. Many roads and churches have been rebuilt.

Our agent has entered Sofia. A diplomat was recruited in Constantinople, after a parley with a Turk diplomat, he was dispatched north by dromon to seek out the Orthodox Rus.

Foreign Affairs:

Anna continues north to Bran. I have sold trade rights to the Turks for 790 florins. Some might question this, however we are not in a position to prosecute an effective war with them, so we may as well trade for now.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

I continue to march on Sofia with Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos.

Order of St. John:

The Order besieges Antioch. However, Senator Makedonios Ksanthopoulos has been afflicted with pnuemonia. (OOC: Welcome to Stainless Steel)

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias have besieged Rhodes.

Senator Anastasios Kaisereitis has joined in the rush towards Durazzo.

The Komnenodoukai:

Caesar Ioannis has besieged Canakkale. I have dispatched a unit of spearmen from Nicaea to him, they should arrive in time for an assault.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senator Philippos Eirinikos have besieged Arta. Senator Savvas ek Militou is following with a unit of Skythikon. I suggest the Tagamata confer amongst themselves to see who will lead the eventual assault.

The Tepaki:

The House continues toward Durazzo.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris is at the gates of Durazzo. I have decided that he shall have the honor of taking the village. The case he has made to me is the strongest. I wish him luck.

Comes Markianos Ampelas has left Thessalonica and is marching toward Scopia.

For 1084, The Order of St. John is granted use of the fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean while the Asteri are granted the use of the fleet in the Aegean. (OOC: The House leaders or their designated proxies can use them during free movement)

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1086

1084 will go down in History as the year we began to reclaim our Empire.

Domestic Affairs:

The first round of construction is done. A second round has begun, except for the Churches ordered in Athens and Nicaea, which will have to wait until next year. My apologies but they are much more expensive than roads or farms. Except for a unit of peasants, there were not sufficient funds to recruit soldiers.

A second Priest will be recruited in Nicaea to assist our first missionary.

Foreign Affairs:

Anna continues north to Bran. We now have two diplomats as well. One continues north across the Black Sea, the new one is making his way west across Thrace.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

With the assistance of Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos and our agent opening the gates, I have occupied Sofia.

Order of St. John:

The Order cotinues to besiege Antioch.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias continue to besiege Rhodes.

Senators Hypatios Machonios and Zigivinos Vasilakios are sailing from Athens to Smyrna with two units of soldiers.

The Komnenodoukai:

Caesar Ioannis has taken Canakkale, renaming it Dardanellia.

Senator Lisas Attaleiatis is now northeast of Nicaea.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senator Philippos Eirinikos, joined by Senator Savvas ek Militou, continue to besiege Arta.

The Tepaki:

The House is outside of Durazzo. I request orders from them.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris is garrisoning Durazzo.

Comes Markianos Ampelas is marching toward Scopia.

For 1086, The Order of St. John is granted use of the fleet in the Eastern Mediterranean while the Asteri are granted the use of the fleet in the Aegean. (OOC: The House leaders or their designated proxies can use them during free movement)

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1087

1086 was a year of preperation and diplomacy.

Domestic Affairs:

The Churches ordered in Athens and Nicaea will again have to wait. I have begun building a market in the capital, Constantinople was once the trading center of the world, and it will be again. We need more merchants to exploit the riches of the East. A unit of spearmen was dispatched from the city to garrison Durazzo and a replacement was recruited.

Foreign Affairs:

Anna has secured an alliance, trade rights and an exchange of maps with the Hungarians. It pains me, but they initially wanted us to pay for the privliege, however Anna was able to negotiate the deal with no exchange of money needed. Our northern border is now secure.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos remains in Sofia while I head north to the Danube to build watchtowers. Allies or no we must keep an eye on the frontier.

Order of St. John:

The Order cotinues to besiege Antioch.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias continue to besiege Rhodes.

Senators Hypatios Machonios and Zigivinos Vasilakios have besieged Smyrna and are awaiting reinforcements.

The Komnenodoukai:

Unaligned:

Comes Markianos Ampelas is besieging Scopia. Senator Anastasios Neokaisareitis is nearby.

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1089

1087 was a again a year of preperation and diplomacy with another addition to the Empire.

Domestic Affairs:

Thessalonica has finished construction of a port. Corinth has land clearance. The foundations for the Churches ordered in Athens and Nicaea have been laid. Work on roads has begun around our new conquest of Scopia. A priest was recruited in Constantinople.

With the disappearance of Methodios Tagaris, I have decided to grant Dyrrakhion to those currently protecting it, the House of the Tepaki. Senator Michail Arianitis is now a Comes and lord of the settlement. A unit of spearmen will be dispatched to the village as soon as possible.

It seems that Senator Iakovos ek Kallipoleos had attracted the attention of a Pagan Magician while in the Levant. At his request, Imperial agents had the heathen removed. It wouldn't do to have a member of the Order of St. John fall under the sway of heresy.

Foreign Affairs:

Our diplomat in the north has made contact with the Rus at Kiev. We have entered an alliance and exchanged maps and trade rights with them. They paid 1000 florins for the deal and just accepted it.

On her way back from Bran, Princess Anna is scouting the approaches to Bucharest. A pirate fleet, based in a fishing village near that town, has approached Constantinople. We may have to put a stop to such blatant banditry.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

I am heading east while north of the Danube. While in the area building watchtowers, I might investigate these reports of pirates based out of Bucharest.

Order of St. John:

The Order cotinues to besiege Antioch.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias continue to besiege Rhodes.

Senators Hypatios Machonios and Zigivinos Vasilakios continue to besiege Smyrna.

Senator Anastasios Neokaisareitis is near Scopia.

The Komnenodoukai:

Caesar Ioannis has returned to Nicaea and passed command of his army to Senator Pavlos Chrysovergos, who intends to take Sinop.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senators Philippos Eirinikos and Savvas ek Militou continue to besiege Arta.

The Tepaki:

The House has taken possession of Durazzo. I request orders from them.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris has disappeared, he was last seen heading northwest from Dyrrakhion. I am displeased. If the Senator complicates our foreign policy, I will become angry.

Comes Markianos Ampelas has taken Scopia.

The fleet in the Aegean is now needed to defend Constantinople from pirates and if successful assist operations against Sinop. Once this fleet has dropped off reinforcements for the Asteri it will immediately fall back under my control. The Fleet in the eastern Med will be redeployed to the Aegean, and is now under my control.

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1090

1089 was a year of conquest and marriage.

Domestic Affairs:

Nicosia has completed Land Clearance while Scopia now has roads. Building continued in all settlements except Dardanellia, where the stables ordered were too expensive for this year. Sofia is ready to upgrade to larger walls.

A third priest is now preaching near Nicaea. I have noticed however, that several of our reclaimed Balkan provinces are held in sway by the schismatic Catholics. This will require action.

Our merchant has arrived near Aleppo to trade spices. This is quite profitable, and once the market is complete in Constantinople, I will send another merchant.

Foreign Affairs:

Princess Anna spotted the passing of a Kievan Rus princess north of her. We again entered negotiations with them: Anna offered to marry Caesar Ioannis's to Princess Eupraxia Yaroslavich in exchange for a dowry of 800 florins. The Rus' reaction was less than overjoyed:

https://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb88/douglaslain/proposal.jpg

Still she agreed. Please join me in wishing my son a joyous and fertile marriage!

https://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb88/douglaslain/marriage.jpg

We have gained much needed funds and cemented our new alliance even further. Anna's trip north has been quite productive, it is time for her to come home.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

I am approaching Bucharest from the west.

Order of St. John:

The Order cotinues to besiege Antioch.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias have taken Rhodes.

Senators Hypatios Machonios and Zigivinos Vasilakios continue to besiege Smyrna. A mid-sized Turkish army is within sight of the city. I hope they will acknowledge our claim to the castle and leave peacefully. As the new year begins, they are still there.

Senator Anastasios Neokaisareitis is near Scopia.

The Komnenodoukai:

Caesar Ioannis is enjoying the company of his new wife in Nicaea. Senator Pavlos Chrysovergos continues to march on Sinop.

Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos has departed Sofia to the north.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senators Philippos Eirinikos and Savvas ek Militou have taken Arta.

The Tepaki:

The House is in Durazzo. I request orders from them.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris is still absent.

Comes Markianos Ampelas is heading west into the wilderness himself.

The fleet near Rhodes is at the use of the Asteri. All otther ships are under my control.

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1092

OOC: Somehow, with all the starts and stops during the AI turn, each AI faction got to move twice. Fortunately, this seems to have little impact on the game and it is playable. Considering we are wiping out garrisons with just bodyguard units, I don't mind the AI getting a small advantage.

Also: If a player takes a settlement, please let me or the current Megas know if it is occupied, sacked or exterminated. Such news would get out and might color how the event is reported.

For example PK let me know the fate of Antioch, but I don't know the fates of Zagreb or Belgrade.

1090 was a year of continued conquest.

Domestic Affairs:

Many titles were accumulated this year:

https://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb88/douglaslain/titles1092.jpg

Three priests are now preaching near Nicaea. I am also contemplating starting a missionary effort in the Balkans, though this will take a few years to implement. At some point the priests in Anatolia should head to the Levant, whether by ship or over land has yet to be determined.

With the Market complete in Constantinople, I will recruit another merchant for the spice trade. Also Garrison Quarters in Corinth and Land Clearance in Sofia were completed. (OOC: The interruptions of the AI turn may have effected the start of turn reports, please double check your own settlements to see if anything else was finished.)

Dyrrakhion is ready to upgrade, once walls are built the town will be able to construct further buildings. So I am requesting a build queue from Comes Michail Ariantis. Sofia is also ready to upgrade its walls.

Foreign Affairs:

A Venetian Diplomat approached Dyyrhakion and entered into negotiations. After much back and forth, in return for 2000 florins, we granted them trade rights and an exchange of maps.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

I have besieged Bucharest.

Order of St. John:

The Order has taken and sacked Antioch, despite the pious talk of the Order of St. John. Still we must do our best to mend fences with the citizens of Antioch, who only a few years ago were part of the Empire.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias garrison Rhodes.

Senators Hypatios Machonios and Zigivinos Vasilakios have taken Smyrna. The Turkish army that was near the settlement has withdrawn out of sight to the east.

Senator Anastasios Neokaisareitis has taken Belgrade and exterminated the population. It matters little if we reclaim the Empire if by doing so we depopulate it. I request a build queue from him so that we might eventually rebuild the settlement.

The fleet near Rhodes moved to Athens in case reinforcements needed to be brought over to Anatolia.

The Komnenodoukai:

Senator Pavlos Chrysovergos continues to march on Sinop, he will reach the city this year if God is merciful.

Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos continues north.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senators Philippos Eirinikos and Savvas ek Militou have garrisoned Arta.

The Tepaki:

The House is in Durazzo.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris, after a few years in the wilderness, has taken Zagreb with just his bodyguards. However, the city is rioting and he will lose it without assistance. A Hungarian army is also quite close to the city. I only learned the Senator's location after he sent me a request for funds to hire mercenaries.

Comes Markianos Ampelas is heading west, still seeking Senator Tagaris.

The fleet near Athens is at the use of the Asteri. All other ships are under my control.

The faithful of Belgrade were welcomed into the bosom of the Empire. Unfortunately, it seems a large portion of the population was under the sway of western heresies and had to be properly reprimanded for their sins.

OOC: Belgrade was unsurprisingly exterminated. Considering the very small number of soldiers involved and that they were all Anastasios' chosen bodyguards, the above report should be what leaks back to Constantinople.

An AAR will soon be posted with more colorful details.

Apologies for the delay. I made the changes a while ago, but when I tried uploading it I got 3 BSODs in a row. Turns out I somehow got a virus. AVG is currently chugging away and has found at least one infection, but it may be a while before it finishes and I do not want to do anything with my desktop until it is cleaned. (I'm currently typing from my laptop.) I will note that my computer was working perfectly fine before this afternoon, and after getting home from work the only things I did were surf websites that I go to every day and download the latest save game file for LotR. I urge anyone who has downloaded a LotR save to do a scan of their own, as that's the most likely cause of my infection. Will let you know if AVG confirms this.

Update: A normal clean didn't get it all. I'm currently doing a command line scan from safemode, but I do not have high hopes. I will most likely end up doing a drive format simply to make sure it's done properly. As such, I will not be able to upload the save any time soon. Please work from the most recent save before I posted, though I again urge everyone to scan the file while downloading it to make sure it is not infected.

If anyone wants to do the changes I made, they were:
Give the architect ancillary to Northnovas'. (give_ancillary "AVATAR NAME" "architect")
Kill my avatar by drowning him in the water crossing by Constantinople. (No need to remove the architect from him, since he's dying anyway.)
Give the Fine Armor retinue to PK's avatar (give_ancillary "AVATAR NAME" "armour_custom")

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1093

1092 was a year of building and diplomacy. 1093 will be the last full year of my term as Megas Logothetes, elections will be held in 1095. (OOC: I'm cheating myself of a year, but I'd like to have new terms start in years ending with a five or zero for simplicity.)

Domestic Affairs:

The three priests in Anatolia have moved to the Aegean coast. I am planning to dispatch them on a fleet to bolster our conversion of Antioch. I have begun recruiting priests for a conversion of the Balkans as well.

Due to an infusion of plunder from Antioch, all settlements currently have construction. Dyrrhakion will soon have walls. Dardenallia and Scopia have completed stables.

Comes Michail Ariantis has officially received the title of Despot of Epirus.

Foreign Affairs:

We have reached an alliance with trade rights and an exchange of maps with the Republic of Novgorod. They drove a harder bargain than the Rus, since the Grand Duke negotiated the deal personally, and we were unable to have them pay for the agreement.

A Polish diplomat arrived in Zagreb. His demand of money for an exchange of maps was outrageous, and we have settled for trade rights.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Forces:

I have taken Bucharest.

The pirates based out of that town sailed into the Aegean, no doubt to wreck havoc upon our trade. All the ships of the Empire combined under the command of Admiral Dionysios and crushed them.

Order of St. John:

The Order remains in Antioch. A force of Templars has arrived at the border to the south.

The Asteri:

Senators Ioannis Kalameteros and Nevelous ek Philadelphias garrison Rhodes.

Senators Hypatios Machonios and Zigivinos Vasilakios garrison Smyrna. The Turkish army that was near the settlement has withdrawn out of sight to the east.

Senator Anastasios Neokaisareitis garrisons Belgrade.

The Komnenodoukai:

Senator Pavlos Chrysovergos has besieged Sinop. There is a Turk army southeast of the city, I am glad we arrived before they did.

Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos continues north.

The Tagamata:

Comes Aleksios ek Ikoniou and Senators Philippos Eirinikos and Savvas ek Militou garrison Arta.

Megas Logothetes' Report for 1095

1093 was a year of recruitment, building and integration.

Domestic Affairs:

The three priests in Anatolia have boarded ship to be moved to Antioch. Two priests are active in the Balkans and will be joined by a third. Six churches have been completed this year, so further missionaries will be available for Anatolia.

The remaining three flotillas of Dromons have docked at the port of the capital for repairs.

Zagreb has finished building roads. I urge that roads be finished as soon as possible around Belgrade so our western frontier is connected to the rest of the Empire.

Construction continues in all settlements. I have also recruited heavily to bring garrisons up to muster and in as many places as possible to relieve bodyguards from directly guarding the walls. Two regiments of militia from Constantinople have been dispatched to Bucharest for garrison duty and replacements recruited. The same has been done in Nicaea to garrison Sinop.

Comes Savvas ek Militou is now officially Despot of Arta.

Foreign Affairs:

A diplomat from the Order of the Knights Templar approached us at Belgrade. In exchange for 1000 florins we have granted them an exchange of maps and trade rights.

Princess Anna nears the capital after her productive trip north.

Military Affairs:

Imperial Army:

I am garrisoning Bucharest until the militia contingent from Constantinople arrives.

Order of St. John:

The Order remains in Antioch. A force of Templars lingers on the border to the south.

The Asteri:

No action.

The Komnenodoukai:

Senator Pavlos Chrysovergos has taken Sinop. The Turks have retreated east after we claimed it.

Senator Ioannis Kantakouzinos continues to monitor the Polish siege of Iasi.

The Tagamata:

No action.

The Tepaki:

No action.

Unaligned:

Senator Methodios Tagaris moved west to build a watchtower, he has returned to Zagreb. The Hungarian army remains in the vicinity.

Comes Markianos Ampelas has turned around and is retracing his steps, heading toward Thessalonica.

Here is the newest save game with the avatar retinue title corrections and the added rebel armies for Event 2 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1958099&postcount=71). Large rebel armies have been created outside of Zagreb, Budapest, Bucharest, Sinop, and Antioch. I have checked and taking control of the rebel faction works perfectly fine. So, I will be controlling them personally for a short while to ensure that they attack where I want them to attack. Please be aware of a few things.

1) The rebel armies are not final. When it rolls around to the rebels' turn, I will be able to disband units in their armies. This is a significant improvement over the system I used in the Cataclysm and it will allow me to adjust the armies to be exactly the way I want them to be. The current setup approximates the level of difficulty that they will be, but some units may be added and removed after the rebels' next turn. This will be done to make the armies slightly more balanced and 'natural.'

2) The first rebel move will occur after the coming turn. Any army that has not been destroyed in the coming turn will besiege their target city immediately after the next turn and begin building siege equipment for an assault. Any avatar that does not want to risk death during an assault defeat is highly advised to flee the town during this turn. I cannot guarantee the safety of anyone who remains inside a threatened city. Again, the cities concerned are: Zagreb, Budapest, Bucharest, Sinop, and Antioch. If you do not think you can defeat the stack and do not want to die, I urge you to clear out immediately.

Report for 1095

Large revolts have occurred in all frontier regions of the Empire, which include Zagreb, Belgrade, Bucharest, Sinop, and Antioch. Each one is in need of reinforcements, and assembling those reinforcements was the focus during this year.

Military Affairs

Since this term will focus on consolidation, and to encourage cooperation between the houses, I will deliver my military reports split by region, not by house. Let me define the following regions:

Α. Interior - Constantinople, Thessalonike, Athens, Arta, Corinth
Β. Danubian Frontier - Zagreb, Belgrade, Bucharest
Γ. Western Frontier - Dyrrakhion, Scopia
Δ. Eastern Frontier - Dardanellia, Smyrna, Rhodes
Ε. Pontic Frontier - Nicaea, Sinop
Η. Syria - Antioch, Nicosia
Ζ. Sea - Black, Aegean, Ionian, Eastern Med

If a region is not reported on, no noteworthy action occurred.

Danubian Frontier

The Danubian frontier was the most affected by the revolts, which happened at Zagreb, Belgrade, and Bucharest. In total, about 4500 rebels were split about evenly between those cities, with the total Imperial forces totaling about 550 at Bucharest, 130 at Belgrade, and 24 at Zagreb.

Bucharest was in best shape, being outnumbered only by about 3 to 1, and Basileus Alexios attacked the rebel army gathered near Bucharest. He inflicted significant casualties and retreated to the city. Apionnas Vringas will bring reinforcements from the capital, and Ioannis Kantakouzions will come from the north with mercenaries.

I have not heard anything from Anastasios Neokaisareitis who commands a weak garrison at Belgrade. I fear he may have been besieged without a chance to escape. I will be arriving from the south, and most of the western resources will be put into quickly converging on Belgrade if Neokaisareitis does indeed remain in the city. Savvas ek Militou also comes from the south with 630 men, but is a great distance away.

Zagreb has been abandoned by Methodios Tagaris.

Pontic Frontier

An army roughly 1500 in strength has gathered near Sinop, which was defended by Pavlos Chrysovergos with 370 men. He has withdrawn from the city to east, though I don't know what he expects to find there except Turks, for it is not possible to pass to Trebizond by the coast, and no ships are deployed in the Black Sea.

Caesar Ioannis comes from Nicaea with a total of 380 men after mercenaries were added to his army.

Syria

Syria has also experienced a revolt also of about 1500 men. The army in Antioch is under command of Makedonios Ksanthopoulos with 870 men, which is the largest army behind the strongest walls that we have. The other generals have encamped outside of the city.

Interior

Recruitment was started in the west to provide later reinforcements, while all standing troops (except minimum garrisons) have been scrambled to the north to provide immediate relief. Mercenaries were added this year only to ek Militou's and the Caesar's army, but more will be recruited next turn. The funds were more than sufficient for recruitment, and the bottleneck was the speed with which men could be trained.

Civilian Affairs

With permission of Methodios Tagaris, Zagreb has been sold to the Hungarians. The agreed price was 10,000 florins, which was delivered immediately. The Megas Logothetes thanks our good Hungarian allies for their cooperation in our time of need.

Construction was started in each idle settlement.

The finances are in good shape, and the Empire looks to profit by about 3000 florins thanks to the Hungarians, despite heavy recruitment and construction.

Save will be made available by TinCow after he has commanded the rebel AI at the end of the turn. The 24 hour period will start at that time.

Rebels have besieged Zagreb (Hungarian), Belgrade, Bucharest, and Antioch.
Rebels have captured the undefended Sinop.

Anastasios Neokaisareitis (The Lemongate) was evacuated out of Belgrade before the siege began. He is located at the nearby ford. As TLG has been AWOL this entire time and was unaware of his predicament, I did not want to leave him in a situation that was essentially guaranteed death. If he really wants to stay in Belgrade and fight, he can walk back to the walls and fight with the garrison when the assault comes.

The 'Unwatched by King' trait was removed from Aleksios ek Ikoniou at Northnovas' request.

A Horse Breeder's Guild was offered in Constantinople. I accepted it. If this was the wrong thing to do, OverKnight and FLYdude have my authority to knock it down and refund 1000 florins to the treasury via console.

Report for 1096

1096 was a year of battles, with some revolts being suppressed, some not, and some yet remaining unresolved.

Military Affairs

Danubian Frontier

Bucharest is saved in a sally by Basileus Alexios. The rebel army was completely annihilated and Roman losses were light. The Basileus remains in Bucharest for the moment.

Belgrade has come under siege. The garrison consists of 112 peasants, after Anastasios Neokaisareitis left the city. Methodios Tagaris and myself have now arrived on the scene, and are attempting to collect all the reinforcing troops that have come from the south. Only 100 soldiers could be collected at Belgrade this year, but that will grow to 600 next year, and to 800 in the following year. Though it may not be necessary, this could grow to 2000 in the year after that. Woe to him who attacks the Roman Empire!

Reports from the west say that Zagreb was garrisoned by the Hungarian army that had been nearby, and was then besieged by the rebels.

Pontic Frontier

Sinop has fallen undefended. Caesar Ioannis marches on Sinop with 380 men, while Pavlos Chrysovergos takes a further 370 away from the city.

Syria

Antioch was saved in a sally by Makedonios Ksanthopoulos and the men of the Order. The rebel army was destroyed.

Interior

Savvas ek Militou is now in Macedonia still marching towards Belgrade. He is slated to be in the 3rd wave of reinforcements.

Sufficient recruitment was performed around the Empire to equip the two private armies of the House Asteri to their minimum requirements. Except that there were no foot missile troops that could be recruited anywhere, so they will have to do for the moment with extra regiments of Scythikon, which seem to meet the "ranged" requirement of our Charter.

Civilian Affairs

Construction was started in each idle settlement.

5500 florins had to be drawn from the treasury this year due to heavy construction and recruitment. There is still a 16600 florin reserve in the treasury.

Made a few moves and declined MoH offer using "the Megas Logothetes can do whatever he wants" rule as adoptions are not mentioned anywhere in the rules. The following reasoning was applied:

Kosmas Mavrozomis was the adopter, and Zim told me that it makes no sense IC, in that Tagaris is not liked by Mavrozomis in any sense.

If the Megas Logothetes has any say in it (i.e. it needs his stamp of approval), then the whole thing is out of the question, Ampelas hates Tagaris. Hell, he's mad about this "heroic" act itself, never mind the previous disagreements they had, although it does save him a turn off the trip to Turkey.

Report for 1098

Military Affairs

Danubian Frontier

The army to remove the threat from Belgrade was assembling in this year. Without making an attempt to coordinate with any of some 600 reinforcement troops which were in range to arrive this year, Methodios Tagaris conducted an attack on the rebel army with 100 men which were (foolishly on the part of the Megas Logothetes) placed under his command. He was aided by about 100 peasants which were drawn from Belgrade's garrison, and which were the only thing holding the rebels outside the city walls. If he had lost, the city would have fallen needlessly right under the noses of 600 Imperial troops. The risk was pointless and the glory is hollow. Belgrade was not saved, but endangered.

Savvas ek Militou will take over the defense in the Belgrade area when he arrives with his troops from Greece in about a year's time.

The Megas Logothetes is taking the bulk of the troops from Belgrade to Anatolia in an attempt to fulfill the Senate's war Edict.

Pontic Frontier

Caesar Ioannis still marches on rebel-held Sinop, but has not made much progress this year. Hopefully, he will make better progress in the following year.

Pavlos Chrysovergos continues on to Trebizond. A Turkish army disappeared in the same direction some years back. If they are besieging Trebizond, Pavlos Chrysovergos is strongly urged not to start a war before the army is assembled for an offensive over the plains of central Anatolia. Pavlos Chrysovergos should contact the Megas Logothetes if he should find Turkish troops at Trebizond.

The heretic Spartacus, having left the protection of his army, was condemned by Vakchos Courkouas and was burned at the stake.

Syria

Most of the Order's generals are marching towards the fort of Aleppo. One of their followers was discovered to be a pagan magician and was drowned in the river.

Interior and Sea

The Aegean fleet has picked up Ioannis Kalameteros from Rhodes and dropped him off on a small Aegean island to build a watchtower, while the fleet sailed to Athens to pick up fresh recruits for the two Asteri private armies. The fleet stands to return next year, while the northern fleet has picked up Anna Komnene and is on its way south.

Civilian Affairs

The Pope of Rome has called a holy crusade on the city of Jerusalem, which is currently in the hands of the Saracens of Egypt.

The Hungarians seemed to have dispatched a large army to the southwest, possibly to reinforce Zagreb.

Construction and recruitment was lighter this year and a minimal sum was drawn from the treasury reserves. The only major project was the castle upgrade at Sofia. The Empire will now have two advanced troop recruitment centers.

With the completion of roads in Nicaea, Belgrade, and Dyrrakhion, virtually the entire Empire is connected by a road network.

Report for 1099

Military Affairs

Pontic Frontier

Pavlos Chrysovergos has reached Trebizond and saw that it was besieged by troops of the Turkish Sultan. This may prove to be our casus belli. I have asked Pavlos Chrysovergos to hold his attack until the offensive armies are assembled. He has held his attack for this year, but does not seemed to have made a final decision yet.

Caesar Ioannis still makes no progress towards Sinop.

Syria

Aleppo is now under siege, while most of the Order's army is in Antioch. The armies in Syria are poorly supplied, and a ship has been dispatched to the Eastern Med to ferry supplies from Cyprus.

Eastern Frontier

Ioannis Kalameteros has arrived in Smyrna with reinforcements from Greece. The pair of Asteri private armies is essentially complete and sits in Smyrna. They are not fully built to specification, however, since a pair of regiments revolted on their way from Dardanellia, and the armies are short on missile troops. They will have to be supplemented with mercenaries.

Interior and Sea

I am three years' march away from the Turkish border.

Savvas ek Militou continues toward Belgrade. Kosmas Mavrozomis is heading to the east.

After ships were detached for the Eastern Med, the Aegean fleet consists of 4 ships.

Civilian Affairs

Anna Komnene has arrived in Smyrna.

A French diplomat at Belgrade offered trade rights, which was accepted.

The King of the Germans has declared war on the Fatimids of Egypt, who are currently in possession of Jerusalem. I believe this means that the Germans have assembled a crusade, which will be passing through our lands shortly. Also, the Fatimid Sultan has died.

An abbey was started in Antioch, and a drill square in Corinth. Both of these will be essential, the first one in pacifying the populace of Antioch and the second with providing advanced, sword-bearing troops of great use in hand-to-hand fighting in cities.

Recruitment was mainly priests and a ship.

3000 florins had to be drawn from the treasury reserves.

Report for 1101

1101 was a year of little activity. It was also the halfway point of my term as Megas Logothetes, which is why I will dedicate the report to overall strategy, and list the events at the end.

There will be a war against the Turks. I predict that the official declaration will come within three years. At the same time, the main attack force will cross into Seljuk-held Anatolia. The attack force comprises 2000 soldiers in total, and will initially be split into two armies, the northern under my own command, and the southern under the command of Ioannis Kalameteros. The first one is in Thrace now and expected to arrive at the border in three years. The second, which is the combination of the private armies of Ioannis Kalameteros and Hypatios Machonios, is assembled in Smyrna.

Meanwhile, Pavlos Chrysovergos watches the Turks at Trebizond, and will attack simultaneously, or even before the main attack.

The West and the Danube are defended by Savvas ek Militou and Basileus Alexios. They have sufficient troops for the task, and it is up to them how to deploy them. If a German crusade comes about, I would ask them to keep an eye on it.

Ceasar Ioannis's lack of progress towards Sinop is disturbing. There is no useful reason for Sinop to remain rebellious. This will not impede the progress of the attack in southern Anatolia, but it would be nice to have back.

The Order continues to attempt to expand slowly around Antioch. Hopefully it won't be long before their lands are contiguous with the rest of the Empire.

The fleet has gone to Crete as a show of force. The Venetian fleet there is of similar size and quality to ours.

Recruitment has slowed down at this time, except for the Navy, which expects to receive another ship years year, and except for priests in Antioch, which have been recruited each year for the past three years.

Construction continues at a decent rate despite the tight budget. A bowyer was started in Nicosia, and it will be the Empire's first, though many archers tend to be available as mercenaries. The complete lack of siege equipment will be addressed when the ballista maker in Nicaea is completed. Roads have been started in Athens, and will complete the road network in the contiguous parts of the Empire. Finally, I have it from a reliable source that brothels are good at attracting spies, and since we have only one spy, I have used Imperial funds to commission a brothel in Thessalonike.

And as the last bit of news, something that everyone already knows, Ioannis Kalameteros and Anna Komnene have been married.

The treasury reserve decreased by 1000 florins this year.

Caesar Ioannis has finally reached Sinop and laid siege. In the same year, the rebels sallied and were defeated. Sinop is ours once again.

The brigands holding Trebizond have sallied against the Turks and lost. The Turks have occupied the city.

Syria

The expedition to Aleppo has captured the fort. The Order may deploy the priests in their lands as they see fit. The single ship now deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean is now under the control of the Order.

Councillor Gottfried of the Templars has taken a page out of our own book of strategy, and marches with just his bodyguard on Adana, which the Turks have taken this year.

Sea

The Aegean fleet, now 6 ships in strength, destroyed a pair of pirate ships off the coast Euboea.

Civilian

The Venetians and the Germans are now at war. The German crusade has been spotted, it is just north of the Danube.

Kosmas Mavrozomis has been married!

New construction this year was stables in Smyrna and a church in Dyrrakhion, the last settlement not to have a church at all. There was some recruitment.

The minor nobles of the Empire feel we should establish diplomatic contact with the Germans if they will be heading through our lands on crusade. A diplomat is positioned to do that soon enough.

500 florins had to be drawn from the treasury reserve this year.

Report for 1104

Military

Pontic Frontier

There have been reports of skirmishing between Roman and Turkish troops at Trebizond. It hasn't been skirmishing so much as that the Turks have not been allowed to leave Trebizond by Pavlos Chrysovergos. I will write to the Turkish Sultan to clear up this little matter.

Danubian Fronter

The commanders on the Danube are now watching the German crusade. Currently, they have conspired to leave the passage by Belgrade impassible, and the crusade will probably be forced through Transylvania and Wallachia into Bulgaria.

Syria

The Order has moved their army north of Antioch. It is completely out of supplies.

Eastern Frontier

The two armies continue towards Turkish lands. The northern is a Nicaea, and the southern has left Smyrna this year.

Civilian

Ioannis Kalameteros has had a daughter.

The only construction this year has been knight's stables in Sofia, which will allow us to train moderately heavy skirmishing cavalry. There was some recruitment.

Most disturbingly, the Germans have declared war on us. Their crusade disappeared out of sight, and I have been informed that there was a declaration of war. Though we have not been attacked anywhere that I can see, we are very clearly indicated to be at war presently. I will seek diplomatic contact with them.

2500 florins had to be drawn from the treasury reserves.

Report for 1105

1105 was a year of mind-numbingly little activity. Everybody was maneuvering.

In the west, there are some who wish to block the German crusade. I would like to remind them that since we are now at war, merely standing at a mountain pass with just your own bodyguard will do little to stop them. Diplomatic contact will be established with the Germans next year.

In the east, more maneuvering. Trebizond still under siege.

The Order can't get passed some Templar guy, but that'll probably get sorted soon enough.

The Franks have also declared war on the Fatimids and we may be dealing with a second crusade.

The only truly interesting news are that Ioannis Komnenos has had a son, and Kosmas Mavorozmis has had a daughter.

The only major construction was a shipwright in Constantinople, which will allow use to deploy the shooting fire to the fleet.

The treasury actually ended up gaining about 100 florins.

I advise the Megas Logothetes to start building of a Chapel to reassert our sway over the significant Orthodox populace in this region. A watchtower near the Turkish frontier would also serve to further secure the Eastern frontier. Pavlos Chrysovergos may be moved by the Megas for this purpose.
