Does anyone have any idea why the Russians are not playable in the Early Period of the game? When you play any other faction in that period, the Russians are there, so why not make them playable? Is this because they have very pathetic troops at that time or what? I kinda like the Russians, but I prefer playing Early Period, so I wanted to see if anyone knew of a mod that made them available as a faction, even if they are highly out-classed.

Go into the early text file in campmap/startpos, copy it and theres a line that says FN_minor beside the russians change it to FN_major now u can play as the russians http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Allways backup the text files you change!
just because Russia as Russia is known for history from early XIV century, taking land of Novogrod and expanding on "used to be lands of Mongols". It was however known as a "Moscow County", up to XV century.

I think it was Muscowy, and it was founded in the mid 12th century by Vladimir-Suzdal, and it was a city. Russia did exist as many minor cities and factions/tribes. At last the city of Muscowy achieved supermacy of the people and it became russia!
