off topic?

Some relatively interesting discussions were closed as they were deemed "off topic". I understand the need to keep discussions on track for the most part, but some recently closed threads were simply just exploring different facets of the topic at hand. They were marked off topic and closed before they could even get going. bummer.

I'm trying to keep from just plain flushing certain "unproductive" threads and instead just close them before all you "SPAM Vultures" start pecking the eyes, as it were, out.
I'll leave this one twisting in the wind as an example.
