View Full Version : An Exercise in Futility - Norway in the Teutonic Campaign

Okay well I wanted to make the Teutonic campaign more interesting by making the Mongols and Norway playable factions. It took some work but the Mongol faction turned out alright, I fixed what I needed to fix and outside of knowing whether or not the -2500 kings purse was intentional I feel confident that my mission was accomplished.

When I turned to Norway however, things went south rapidly. In effect I've had to add in all the appropriate entries in the export_descr_building file so the Norwegian units will become available within the campaign. At first things seemed to be working out okay, then the problems began. The most key example of what I mean is the total inability for Norway to recruit Spear Militia. I checked the custom battle unit lineup and Norway certainly has a Spear Militia unit. However after I edited the buildings file, setup M2TW to use my modified data and then started the game without a hitch, I found I couldn't make use of spear militia. There appears to be simply no way to recruit the unit even though as far as I know the unit/building files are properly formatted.

This isn't the most bizzare problem I've run into either. In the case of Castle upgrades, I made the appropriate changes to the text file and expected to see Viking Raiders available for most of the tech tree. To my surprise although they show up frequently, they are no longer available at the Citadel level, even though the file has been edited properly for the unit to be ready to go. Even more frustrating is my City Wall upgrade unit lineup. The only unit that shows up is Town Militia, even though I've edited the right files to make the other units recruitable, they wont show up at all. I really haven't got a clue as to what's gone wrong and the guys at totalwar center don't seem to know either.

I've read about people having somewhat similar problems, however the tutorials and messages I've read on the forums pertain to solutions that haven't done me any good, or have not dealt with my problem specifically.

What I want to find out is A) what is potentially going wrong here and how can I fix it, B) how can I change Norway's province color to blue with a red outline, as it is in the preview map, rather than the current red with blue outline, and C) An explanation of what the numbers mean in the export_descr_buildings file. So far my searches for answers on my own have been less than fruitful, hopefully someone can actually point me in the right direction at least so I can finish up my fixes and play the campaign with my newly modded factions, thanks a head of time for your help.

Did you add the '--io.file_first --' to the Teutonic desktop icon? If you didn't it will ignore all the changes you've made.

Unlike many posts on this subject that I've perused; the first_file batch file addition is not going to help me, as I've already implemented it. That is NOT the cause of my problems. Like I said, my Mongolian improvements went through without a hitch, it's the Norwegian changes which have stalled for unknown and inexplicable reasons. I might just have to leave the faction as permanently unplayable, it's not what I want but given the situation it might be the only reasonable solution.

i searched through export_descr_buildings and added norway where ever denmark was listed.
have not played through the campaign as norway yet, but units seem to show up just fine.
it seem that for a faction to be able to recruit units consistently, it must be listed as a required faction for both the appropriate building as well as the actual unit. and that this listing must also be repeated for the unit in all of the buildings upgrades.
