Grr... Okay, this is getting totally absurd. I haven't been able to sleep properly this whole week. The midwest, particularly my good ol' state o' Iowa, is getting absolutely hammered this spring by terrible weather. I was stuck in my rather uninhabitable basement for two hours tonight because of a tornado warning, and right now its pouring rain like God's determined to send us another great flood or something. Its rained EVERY night this week, and every time its been a thundering downpour accompanied by lots of lightening and thunder. Not to mention I'm gonna have to mow the lawn AGAIN this weekend(just did it Saturday) because the grass is growing like crazy because of all the rain. And on a more serious note, Parkersburg, IA, was nearly destroyed altogether by a tornado a week or so ago. I swear I'm gonna flip if this sorta *junk keeps continuing.
*substituted in for very much unfrontroomish word

Well, tornado's suck, but what's not to like about thunderstorms? I love thunderstorms. Rain just means the park is empty of people when you go there, and it's warm enough in the summer that the wetness isn't uncomfortable. Lightning and thunder are always fun.
It's the humid, muggy weather I hate.

Thunderstorms suck when they occur EVERY night at roughly midnight to two o'clock, leaving you sleep deprived.
You should come to Aus. When we get rain we get heavy rain for a week (at least where I live). Lightning knocking out powerlines, causing powercuts. Although bucketing water out of the sump in my basement isn't fun.
Dunno about Tornadoes though, don't live far enough north.
Cover your yard with sand.

Its one thing to rain, its another to downpour, cause floods, bringing tornadoes, etc....
I don't mind rain, its the severe thunderstorms we've been getting constantly since winter ended(about 2-3 months ago:inquisitive:)
Rain is good.
Rain washes away all the people which improves the outdoors immeasurably.
Plus you can go for a good run or cycle (and go really fast because there's nobody in your way) and not get uncomfortably hot or sweaty.
True, this isn't such a good idea in a thunderstorm. But then you are treated to the fantastic, awe-inspiring display of light and sound, a marvel of the natural world.
Speaking of marvels of the natural world, rain also brings about rainbows, a truly magnificent and beautiful natural spectacle and a truly elegant little piece of physics all rolled into one.
All sun does is give you sunburn.
I would never have thought saying this, but it sunny here too.
Not only is it sunny but we have a water restriction. Don't water your garden or wash your car. What is this world coming to? This is Bergen for crying out loud.

I know what you mean Sigurd. Here in southern California (70's & partly cloudy) we've been in a drought for about 3 years - our Governor just this week declared us officially in a drought. Net result? Instead of 'suggested' water conservation measures, now they're mandatory.
Now, if I could just figure out some way to capture and transport makaikhaan's excess (unwanted) Iowa rainfall out here to the left coast, I'd be one rich Org'ster.

Have no worries Kurki. They would simply tax 90% of your profit. :beam:

Believe me, you'd be welcome to it. As makaikhaan's neighbor to the north, I can tell you that it's not been much better here weather-wise. I generally like thunderstorms -- they help me sleep -- but I have to admit it starts to get a little old when you've gone through 4 tornado watches/warnings in the last 2 weeks.
Midwestern thunderstorms and rain aren't an issue for me. I enjoy the show.
It's the @!#%*150-year-old midwestern house in combination with the thunderstorms that makes it not quite so much fun. If only we still lived in caves...

We're still in 10 years of drought. Though I must say this winter/spring has been peculiarly wet almost like when I was a kid, kind of nice for a change. The Water table is still way down, but its improving each year, and besides all that mandatory in California? nah actually I'm not surprised. No Mandatory water use here, we're damming up our basement windows and yard with sandbags cause the river is swollen with run off.

makaikhaan,
have to agree with you about the constant downpours/ thunderstorms @ 2 am. couple of days ago it flooded so bad that i thought we turned the cornfields into rice paddies. LOL And a major street was completely impassable (about 5 feet of water).
what part of Iowa are you living in, I'm in central Iowa.

I hate Swiss weather. It's been raining non-stop for the past 4 weeks (!!!!!! ***!!!!! ) and next week, while im gonna chill here (school is over), the entire week will be rainy.
*** is wrong with this ******* climate?

Hah, I can at least water my garden, no restrictions in my municipality yet AFAIK. But the heat..the heat...It could at least be over casted if not raining. :juggle2:

The truth. At least the midwest folks aren't so delusional due to over-watering that they've taken to calling rain 'liquid sunshine' as we Washingtonians do.
Thunderstorms - just put in earplugs. Rain - be glad tisn't drought.
Mowing - leave the mower out in the rain.
Problems solved.

Queensland, Australia has been in drought in drought (the worst in over 100 years) for the last 3-4 years. The combined water supply was 15% at the lowest point. Outback Queensland had to have water shipped in. This last few months we've had less than average rainfall, but the government has actually done a bit, building a water transfer pipeline (which my brother supervised for 9 months, his first out of uni job :2thumbsup:) and a desalination plant. We are now between 39 and 40%!!! Still on Level 6 water restrictions, you just get used to it.
My knowledge of the restrictions:
140 Litres per person per day, no outside watering/washing/filling up the pool, 4 minute showers. If you have a rainwater tank you can do some watering. It was tough to begin with, but its ok now. WE have to hit 40% total supply before we go down to Level 5, which means 30 minutes a week of a hand held hose watering/washing/filling up the pool.
And you complain about a bit of rain :laugh4:

We stole it.
The spring was so bad so we thought we needed some compensation. :2thumbsup:
More seriously, some of the weird weather is probably connected to the current La Niña.

Aww... COME ON!!!!!!!!
We got another deluge this morning, accompanied by tremendous thunderclaps and lightening that woke me straight up. You drought ridden guys get your arses up here NOW, we've definitely got an inch or four of rain to spare...
He he he, it's always so, the place which needs water has little, and those who have it, have so much of it that they get sick of it.
About 500 Km South of where I live the weather is terribly humid most of the year. And here it's dry and hot, temperature stays around 45 degrees for atleast 9 months a year. Sand, rocks and prickly plants, that is all.

Wel it rained here a while ago, the latest in a long time. Man, global warming really can tick everyone.
We just had 2 days of rain here after 6 weeks of drought. Thank you Thor!!!
And it is now sunny again. :beam:
Here, too, the heavens have finally opened and replaced weeks of baking hot (for the UK, so about 25C) sunshine with a cool, refreshing drizzle. Which when I cycle home from work, instead of getting sunburn, heatstroke and dehydration all at once, I can savour the sweet, cool rain as I glide effortlessly down the deserted cyclepath.
Although, TBF, the news is now saying there are severe floods in the Midwest, so I grant that that type of rain isn't so much fun. It's nice to live in a country which doesn't get such crazy extremes of weather.

You guys are lucky... just getting rain. I woke up this morning aghast that my roof top was thinly covered in snow! Ms. Waki was a little furious that the weather destroyed her vegetation, and the child-folk don't know that this is a bad thing yet... now she's up in arms and says if it continues we're moving out of here (not that I would mind at this point) but still.. lol. Montana summers are supposed to the pinnacle of awesomeness not snowy...dreary...hell. On the other hand Mark Twain did write that "The Coldest Winter I have ever spent, was a summer in Montana." I just hope it doesn't ring true this year.

And you guys want rain...
Yeah, I just got done reading about that less than an hour ago. Crazy.
I'm just glad my relatives in SE Minnesota are okay; looks like the Root River didn't flood too badly after all. Of course, there's still more rain coming, so.... :sweatdrop:
makaikhaan: Where in Iowa do you live, anyway? (Read as: Are you and your family going to have to evacuate as well?)
seireikhaan
06-14-2008, 21:24
I'm in the Des Moines area, I'm fine. The bad flooding was near the river, while I'm farther west away from it. Family is near Dubuque, but they seem to have not had to evacuate. However, some of them are still in the farming business and have been hit pretty hard with some of the crops being drowned.

I've been wondering how your doing. I'm glad to hear your ok. I've been keeping track of the news lately. I'm only a few hours east of you down 88. So us in north-central Illinois get the weather after it dumps on you guys. :dizzy2:

I've been watching the news lately and it seems like its been pretty tough for you guys in the Midwest.
As for where I am, I must say its imo, the perfect summer weather. Low eighties(F) for the high, sunny, slightly breezy, and sparse rain. That is a big improvement over the weather at the beginning of june. It was 90s/100s from the beginning of june up until the 11th or so and right during my non air-conditioned final exams for school too
