View Full Version : My actual gripes with the game.

No, that's not a flame on this game. It has stolen most of my free time since ten days, and the pro hugely get over the con. Still, there is some little frustrating points that diminish the gaming experience. Only little grips, but still.

1) This one is really THE most annoying gripe I have. It's ships avoiding fight by quitting the sea where they would be engaged.
I'm just COMPLETELY STUFFED WITH IT !
I have a navy that is dozens ships large, the Italians have only 1-2 ship left, but they are able to completely cut my trade and my transporting chain because of this single ship that just switch sea each year, effectively nullyfing all the attack I make on it. It go from a sea where I have two firegalleys to a sea where I have three, but as I can order fight only in its STARTING sea, it just can go on forever - or at least, until a blessed year where the AI just does not move it.

THAT REALLY SUCKS, AAAAAARGH !

2) Just like the previous one - Assassin following targets, and target running over the world.

I'm extremely frustrated with this, and with losing 3 valor assassins. I'm NOT wishing my assassin to follow this dumb emissary from Constantinople all the way to sweden (yes it happened). I just want him to waste the guy who stay in the province. It would be cool if the game ask us if we want to follow the target or stay in the province and switch to another one/cancel the assassination.

3) The suicidal AI and the "world vs me" syndrom.
Why Egyptians, with their three provinces left, continue to stubbornly refuse my ceasefire proposal ? It's not like their combined armies were bigger than the single I have in Palestine, nor if it was me who started the war.
I want to have IMMERSION, I wish to have opponents acting accordingly to what a nation ruler would do (try to survive, develop friendship/hate, etc...) and not just the "oops, you're the player, so you try to win, so the AI must cooperate together to attack you".

Ok, these ones where the biggest. Others are little annoyance, but nowhere close to the previous ones.

4) Vices flagged too hastily, even when circumstances make them undeserved ("eager to retreat" just because a weakly defended province suddendly received 2500 men in reinforcement ?) ; there is also V&V that can be contradictory (I got a "unbribable" coupled with a "no morality" ; so basically a honest man with no morality, which bribe cost is both at +200 % and -50% http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/confused.gif ?). And the V&V are definitive, I would like to see them evolve over time.

5) Spears too strong.

6) Cavalry too weak, especially heavy one. Yes, I would like to trample some units sometimes http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
No it's not because I don't know how to play, thanks.

Here. Well, beside that, it's a hell of a game http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Then you have to remember to get your assassin out of the country he ended up in before he gets his head cut off.

Its funny. I see post where Spears too strong. And I see em where they are to weak.

I think they are fine.
Calvery is little weak though. I am disapointed in that. I still dont think calvery should be able to take on Spears or pikes though head on.

Melee units though is another story.

I disagree with 5 and 6. Spearmen can be ripped apart by an infantry unit with good attack and bonus vs armoured troops. The only acception might be swiss pikeman. As for Cavalry they werent that powerful during the middle ages, so they shouldn't be that powerful in a game that take place in The Middle Ages. Besides I don't think cavalry is to weak they do to well against infantry head on.

Akka,
As to your #1 gripe. I think this may work for you. The enemy ship is going from sea A to sea B and then the next turn is going back to sea A. If the enemy ship is in sea A and you also have ship in sea A, move your ship to sea B and drop it there. Then pick it up and have it attack the enemy ship in sea A. Your ship will stay in sea B, but if you look at the ship counter the guns will be firing. When you end your turn and the computer moves the enemy ship to sea B your ship will engage it there and your problem will be solved.

Haven't tested it much, but it seemed to work the few times that I did do it.

i agree generaly with the points akka is making.

i would add one point to assasains.

when you tell a assasain in one of your provences to target a enemy in another one of your provences why does the assasain not go directly to the target proviences through my own lands !

my assasains always take the scenic route thru my enemies lands, increasing their chances of getting boiled, whipped and chopped (or whatever it is that is happening on the soundclip)
its strange because the direct route is thru my lands, they actually go out of their way when they travel thru the enemy lands. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I find that if I make multiple attacks against the enemy ship in one turn versus one big attack, I have a better chance of catching and killing him. Split up your ships and hit him multiple times.

I agree. What the hell does my assassin think he's doing going to the other end of the map trying to catch some idiot emissary?!! Just kill them if they try to get into one of my many palaces where I keep the hottest looking concubines on the planet. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

I agree. It makes no sense.

One problem I've found is that its much harder to judge moral. In shogun I could always know roughly how far I could push my troops before they ran.

Most of my MTW defeats are from some men fleeing in circumstances where they havent before. And yes I do know about vices, F1, etc etc...
