View Full Version : Coolest unit of the TW series

I've played all the TW games to some extent or another, although I've only really made any serious progeess campaign-wise in the latest two.
Having just finished a campaign as the Apaches in Kingdoms, I've been thinking about what the single coolest TW unit is, having been inspired by the Mounted Thunder Braves. I do not necessarily mean the best or toughest unit, just the coolest in terms of appearance and maybe also its performance, or anything unique about it.
Some of my candidates that spring to mind are:
Mounted Thunder Braves (M2TW:K)
Priests of Quetzocotl sp? (M2TW:K)
Canons of the Holy Sepulchre (M2TW:K)
Byzantine Fire Throwers (M2TW:K)
Camel Gunners (M2TW)
Elephant Artillery (M2TW)
Gothic Knights (M2TW)
Norse War Clerics (M2TW)
Scythed Chariots (RTW)
Scythian Nobles (RTW)
Woad Warriors (RTW)
Hounds of Cullan (RTW:BI)
Kensai (STW)

Kensai (S:TW) - a unit which stands lonesome against almost any unit and take ages to die - essentially, that's just got to be considered amazing.
Hashashin (M:TW) - a bunch of fanatics from the Nizāriyya faction - the description in itself invokes fear of them. Combine that with the image on the card and you've got the most amazing murder team ever.
Berserk Units (R:TW) - despite their lack of realism, berserk units are simply brilliant. I particularly like the way they superhumanly fling units into the air as if they were rag dolls.
Screeching Women (R:TW) - the idea of a bunch of semi insane women going out to support their husbands in battle is kind of a cool idea in itself. The way they act on the field adds to the factor - I especially like the animation, the screaming noise, and the way the axes appear to be part of the hands.

Has no one bothered to mention the Spartan Hoplites? They are unique and famous for their fighting skills. They're one of the best infantry units in RTW.

Technically, I have --
Spartiatai Hoplitai (EB)
ATGs Spartan Hoplites
KLA's 300 movie hoplites
But not the vanilla ones.
The Spartans in vanilla are definitely formidable, but their cool factor is somewhat low, what with them dressed like more like priests wearing pilos helmets instead of hoplites.

In STW:
No-Dachi Samurai and Kensai*
In RTW:
I love Scythia's Head Hunting Maidens and Scythian Noble Women, and Germania's Screeching Women. And Greek Hoplites = classic.
*though now that makes me think of Heroes and a little guy yelling YATTO!

Also, the majority of units in EB.

MTW- Kataphracts, for being an absolute tank in the early period.
Anybody that is naked and charging the enemy

Panzerphaunts
Even the name is cool. :beam:
Kensai are a close second though. It would be fun to hold a bridge with just 6 of them against a whole army.

I like Arcani I know they are completely ahistorical, they are still ninja warriors and the double sword thing is really nice I once sent 1 of them against 20 (in custom) battalions of peasant and they killed about 8 whole battalions-they sent the first routing before they got to them!:smash:
Warrior monks.

I always had a soft spot for Swabian Swordsmen in MTW: VI after they cut a swathe through my army of veteran Almohad Urban Militia. It was the first time I'd encountered them and after they decimated my troops I was just like "wtf happened?" ~:o

Definitely Muire are among one of the most lethal units in the game. Their stamina is unreal! And they can be recruited early in the campaign.:egypt:
The Varangian Guard from MTW.
Longbows are pretty cool too, not flashy or anything but i love watching their volleys ~D
STW=Geisha: great movies and virtually unstoppable
MTW=Boyar Sons: yes the byzantines have some fine units that certainly contend for "coolest".
RTW= never played it
MTW2= mounted dvor: Sure I like to play novgorod/russia and it takes a long time to get this unit but its a heavy hitter amongst the cavalry units available.
Honroable mention= MTW2 Cossacks
Isn't all cavalry mounted?
The ones that are lying on the ground wounded or dead aren't mounted. I don't like those kind very much because they aren't terribly manoeuvrable.
Guess i`m somewhat bland....two i love are the Viking Huscarle and the Warrior monk from STW. maybe not the way they look but for what they did........and maybe the Varangian Guard too.

Hey, there's no shame in liking units for their effectiveness....and there's no denying that all three you mentioned are indeed very effective. ~:)

Good point. I stand corrected... I think.

:whip: :clown:
never played the Byz much.....but i remember one game of 3v3 where we lost. And I was down to just a couple units including 2 huscarle on top of a hill. My two allies had routed and the enemy was reorganizing in my direction. I took a deep breath and charged down that hill.
Going into mod territory here but I'd say the Khwarezm Guards from the Broken Crescent mod are probably my favorite units in terms of look and sheer battle winning power. Images, these are early shots from pre-release alpha:

From vanilla, I'd say Gothic Knights. Just love that shiny armor and two handed swords.
I'd have to place my vote overall for Kensai in STW, a one man wirlwind of distruction. It did suck though when they were killed by arrow fire.
MTW: Long Bowmen, I would keep four or five units deployed and then three or four in reserve. They would take out the enemy before reaching my line.
RTW: Spartan Hoplites. I just like Pikes in general.
M2TW: Dismounted Ritter Brutter. Crazy fear causing Germans in scary armor, nothing better.
Dimeolas, Warrior Monks were one of my favorite in STW too. They made other buddist troops reluctant to engage them combined with high moral with thier portable shrines, whats not to like? I remember playing as the Oda Clan and trying to take out the rebel monks at Ise, I out numbered them 2 to 1 with yari spear men and they still cleaned my clock.

Oh yeah, I remember my massive Oda armies of crud ashigaru failing dismally to wipe out them pesky monks, even when outnumbering them 4 to 1. I always loved getting lots of upgraded monks and watching them massacre enemy infantry.
STW: Gotta be the No-Dachi samurai; the first true offensive unit you get after playing through the early game with mostly Yari samurai, it was very gratifying to see just how fast they would carve through an infantry unit. Liked the musketeers too but they did virtually guarantee that even if the weather was "dry and sunny all day" there would be a steady downpour within minutes of starting the battle.
MTW: Jannisary Heavy Infantry. Their polearms just look vicious and not many units were a match for them.
MTW:VI: Obviously beserkers, no contest.
RTW: Spartan Hoplites. Phalanx units were always my favourite type (especially in the earlier versions where they were literally unbreakable from the front) and these guys are the best of the best.
RTW:BI: Hun Elite Cavalry. Makes me long for a "Mongolia: Total War" so I can use these guys against someone more formidable than the decrepit and dying Roman empire.
M2TW: Basilisks. Once you figured out never to use the secondary fire, it was great fun watching cannonballs skip through the enemy front line taking out whole columns of men in one shot, and they make a satisfyingly loud "boom" when fired. If only they weren't so annoying to control.
M2TW:Kingdoms: Morgannwg Spearmen. Plate armoured spearmen, one of the very few true "heavy spearmen" units in the game and one of the only ones actually capable of standing up to the overpowered heavy cavalry.
M2TW:BC: Rajput elephants, any of them. Toned down a bit from the insane unstoppable panzerphants but cheap and plentiful enough to actually form a useful wing of the army rather than a novelty special unit. Rajput armies of equal parts elephants, light cavalry and foot archers is an interesting new unit mix I hadn't tried before.
STW: Kensai, who wouldn't love a master swordsman hacking his way through petty ashigaru? Of course, when he came out the other side and looked up to the hills, he'd see 200 odd archers with bows at the ready... Then as the volley whistles toward him he readies his katana and bats the first arrow away, and slices the next into two, and barrel-rolls between the third and fourth, and kicks the fifth out of the air whilst catching the next with his hand only to be struck between the eyes by a musket ball...
Damn muskets, they ruin everything.
MTW: Nothing really strikes my mind with a unit that is ultra-cool.
RTW: War dogs, this was a tough one, it could've been incendiary pigs - I mean, I love sending wave after wave of fiery pigs through the breach of a city wall, but sending wave after wave of war dogs in from all directions into a Roman camp is just too fun... after being totally demoralized by flaming rocks they get war dogs unleashed at them from all sides of the camp... ahhh, good times.
M2TW: Elephant cannons, forgot their proper name, but simply point, shoot and shake - if you get what I mean. Line them up, fire at the enemy, then charge in there and shake them up. Always wins.

Kensai (STW)
Reiters (M2TW) (There's something cool about mounted guns in German)
Gothic Knights (M2TW) (Need no justification)
Arcani (RTW) (Anything that can jump out of a perfectly clear space and fight like a regiment of heavy infantry gets my vote!)
Ritterbr.u.der (M2TW) (Try charging the heretics with 5 companies of these! Chuck Norris on horses!)
