Rebel factions

is it possible to play as any of the rebel factions/tribes? some of them have terrific starting positions like the Gaels, is it possible?

I don't think so; I'm sure their non-playability is hard-coded.

I suggest you start a migrated faction-campaign, that would be as close as it gets.

The rebel faction is not a real faction and thus is not playable, it lacks a real economy, a real diplomacy (all you can is bribe them...)...

It is possible to play as rebels, but it is a buggy experience, not to mention an overwhelming "empire" size from turn 1.
