Okay, I have a lot of questions, but I'll start with two.
First, I am starting with the English. I doscovered that, even with a port in Normandie and Wesex I can't transfer troops between the island and the mainland. The only way still seens to be through Flanders. Even with the French as (temporary) allies, I can't move troops through there with out starting a war. If I'm not willing to take on Flanders and the French, what do I need besides the two ports? Can I build ships to do that? That leaves the 2 halves of my empire compleatly seperated for a while.
It looks as though I need a castle to make longbows. That means that I need a castle in any province where I want to build them, ie Wales? Do most of you immediatly build forts in all your provinces that don't have them?
Oops, I lied. One last question. I bribe Navar and they have iron. The manual/hint book seems to think this is good (the iron). However, I can't see how this immediatly helps me. Do you just trade iron or does itr help in building your units somehow?
Thanks for any help.

Nice to meetyou, please have fun here http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
1/ Ports.....
In order to sent troops into europe you need to build a shipwright on the southern cost of England.....
This will then allow you to transport troops. However, inorder to build a shipwright you will need to have built a keep. (castle upgrade)
2/ Castles...
This is a good point.... My suggestion would be build certain building in certain provances. IE choose the provance that you want to build your armies in. Wales is an excellent example as it builds better Longows than England provances.....
3/ IRon
Im not sure on this one, I would need to be playing the game to answer this, as as Im not sorry cant help. MAybe somebody else could I I can have a look tonight when I get home from work....
You all have a great day because when night falls there will be hell to pay
1. To move troop back and forth using boat: you will need Port at the starting point (Wessex to Normandy: need port in Wessex). You also need at least one ship in each sea region from the starting point to the destination (from Wessex to Normandy: need one ship in English Channel). Also, no enemy ship sharing the same sea region with your ship (in this case English Channel).
2. Can you build Longbow anywhere? I don't remember if I could build Longbow anywhere in my English campaign. Anyway, do I build Fort in all provinces? eventually, yes I will sonner or later depending on the money and the needs.
3. Iron give you the option to build Metalsmith which will improve the attack (up to +4) of your troops (hand-to-hand combat only). Missile troops will not improve their missile with metalsmith.
I you have a port built already, then you need a shipwright to build ships. Have a ship in every sea region making a chain from your port to where you want to arrive at. As long as no enemy ships interupt your chain of ships (a blockade) you can transport troops to a new location, and build trade too if connected to another port.
I wouldn't build too many castles in the begining of a game because it takes up too much florin to build one in every region. Concentrate on increasing your income, farmland, trade, giving your gernrals titles (those scroll/chair looing things in each region you own) increases your income, you could raise taxes also, at the risk of starting a rebellion, or getting some pretty bad vices for your heirs.
Iron is ok to mine lets you build a metal smith which will produce a weapons bonus for men produced in that region. Most mines will only give you more florins.

One small tidbit, (cause youll ask tomarrow)
Here's your question- ok i could move my units from england to france using the ships in the sea zone from my port in so. eng to the mainland. But how come i cant move some back or move to other places where i have a line of ships connected?
2 reasons-you must have a port in the province to get on a boat. (you dont need a port in the province you want to land on)
and if you went to war by landing troops and the french have boats in your sea zones then the zones are blockaded and you cant move units through those zones.
one more point that got me- the ships wont fight on thier own. one side or the other must attack. the ai seems content most of the time to just blockade. you actually have to pick up a boat in a sea zone and drop in on an enemy boat in the same sea zone. that means you cant move a boat to a new zone and attack. youve gotta move thier first, sit- then attack the next turn.
all this came from forums or trial and error. its stuff thats fuzzy in the manual and took me a while to get hope it helps..
