View Full Version : Changing faction names mid-game

Hello all, I am one of those guys that changes faction names md-game, if they get out of their original homelands or builds up into a huge empire as well as changing their color. So I was wondering if any of you could translate these names into the corresponding faction's language;
1) Parthian Empire - Arshkanig
2) Armenian Empire - ?
3) Greek-Saka Empire - ?
4) Great Gaul - Vergalla
5) Great Iberians - Vereberom
6) Carthaginian Empire - ?
7) Germanic Confederancy - ?
This is more to represent a facton that has grown in considerable size and becomes more like a unified nation than just a single ruling tribe.
Thanks in advance!

I don't think that Carthage would change it's name. Just as the Romans never diverted from SPQR, although they no longer were a city state. The reason is that the Karthadastim empire is totally focused on Carthage, since it is a city-state, similar to Rome (though very different of course). Empire without Carthage - no empire, just Punic colonies. Or do you change SPQR to Imperium Romanum?

Yep, I change it to Imperivm Romanorvm (in theory), although I've never gotten that far in my campaigns.

Faction names can be changed? :dizzy2:
Yes, they can.
Edit the descr_sm_factions file in your /data folder.

Actually, it's in data/text folder. The text file is called expanded_bi
Yes, Maion is correct. If you want to change the Colour of the faction, go to the descr_sm_factions file.

Sooo, does anyone have the knowledge to enlighten me with these translations, or should I give up my hopes?

not really about the topic, but is there any way to change factions in the mid-game?
Maion Maroneios

Go to data/text and edit the expanded_bi.txt lines.

The Gallic Confederation would be something like "Vergalla", right?

What's the correct form of address for something belonging to the Kingdom of Pergamon? Is it Pergamene? That's what I was using conversationally in my other game, but if I'm going to change the name of my faction it should be right, really. Since I'm playing as Pergamon (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=104894) (well a new Hellenic League led by them for now), I could do with changing things to fit better.
Should the faction name be Pergamon, or Kingdom of Pergamon?

If you check Stele 6 for EB II you should be able to get a bunch of info on possible names for Pergamon and other tidbits.

Me needie Armenian Empire.
I suppose they would revert to some sort of Persian thing, maybe Yervaduni Dynasty.

I believe it means "Great Gaul", literally. It's a good idea when you've killed off the Arverni [or Aedui] and you have united all of Gaul.

Ok, I thought about this from some EB quote I think from a statue of Dis, IIRC, but I wasn't 100% sure.
5) Iberian Confederancy - ?
That hypothesis was so ludicrous in real history, that there wasn't ever a name to be invented.
We could go from the same situation as Gaul although. I'm no expert in either Lusitan inscriptions, nor in Celtic language, but since Lusitannians were a Celtic-influenced, people, we can make the same "name"
Since I suppose Ver means "Great" in Celtic, normally in Lusitan, some Celtic words lose their first letters, so we can use the same word to express the Iberian Confederacy, with the replacement of Galla with Eber, since it is believed the the river Ebros was originally named after the people of the region, which was generalized to Iberia.
So, I'd do something like Ereberom, supposedly meaning Great Iberians. The Lusitan plural is also different. While Celtics used "Os", Lusitans used "Om". Of course all this is made from a person which knows little about the Lusitan language, which is a poorly known language to begin with.
EDIT: Lusitans don't lose the first indo-european letters, Celtics do. I'd propose Vereberom, then.

I assumed that one gallic tribe had wiped out the other one, thus creating "Great Gaul" ;)

Something that appears distinctly on a zoomed out mini-map.

Maybesome blue colour like presented in EBII's Stele#6? Just google for "rgb color values" and change the faction't primary colors in descr_sf_factions.txt.

How does that blue contrast with the sea on the campaign map?
And how similar to the Hayasdan or Baktrian colours?
More like a dark purple, almost indigo, is what pergamon's faction color is according to stele 6.

Some bright yellow/orangeish colour should do.

I really need to go and have a proper read of that Stele.

Ew, I don't want Dutch Pergamon! :laugh4:
(No offense to our Nederlands posters intended there)

New name, new colour, but my agents are still green. Any ideas?
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v66/Kiero/EB%20screenshots/Pergamon%20Game/NewColour.jpg
I like the blue-purple (it's Slate Blue 3) a lot.
No Netherlands? Then it's "Vive la France Royal!" In other words, I don't know how to mess with 'em colors.
You have to change the agent's texture. Take the Baktrian one.

OK this is all very nice lads, but could you stick to the topic please? If you want to show your faction's colors you can do so... elsewhere or something...

Campaign screen stuff is changed, but the banner colours and such in battles aren't (as in they're still green).

Where do you get to them? Or did I miss something when I was editing before?

Hmm, now you're going beyond the limits of my abilities, I think. They're in .dds format, whatever that is. Taking that association off the end doesn't turn them into .tga's either.
Is there a masterclass somewhere on how you play around with them?

Modding textures is also beyond my abilities. I only know they're there because I've been looking around the folders. Actually, you can view them as .tga's, at least I can. If you really need to change them for making a better distinction on the battle map, you could indeed swap around Baktria's dark blue textures with yours.

I'd just disable battle banners, if I were you. Then you don't have to worry about their color.

Apparently the Yervaduni dynasty would be called "Orontid(sp?) So ...I was trying to figure out what the
name of the "Orontid Persian Empire" would be in the Persian language.
I didn't get very far because I don't know..um..anything about it :)

how many numbers are in the code for the colour? i want 000,238,000 how many zeros do i put in 1 2 or 3? and if i want black as my secondary colour i just have 0,0,0 right?
Once you have established the new Persianate dynasty, you may call them Arshkânîg/Arshkanig (Which means "Arsacids").
Credit goes to TPC, for telling how Pahlava should be called after it forms it's Empire.

Does changing name effect reforms?

Does changing name effect reforms?
Nope, the reforms are keyed to the internal names, which are the original RTW names for factions in the main.
