This might be a politically charged topic so I decided to post it in the Backroom. But...

Which nation has the most epic national anthem?

I'm going to go with the following:

*USA: Star Spangled Banner (Jimi Hendrix version)
*Soviet Union
*China (It grows on you)
*France
*South Africa

And some completely un-epic ones:
*Canada
*Australia
*Germany
*England

Erm, you know there's already a thread on this in the Frontroom? Not even managed to get locked so far.

Why don't the brits change their anthem to "Rule, Britania!"? That is the absolute best national song i've ever heard.

God save the queen is lame. Get rid of that lady already.

The Sex Pistols version is solid though...

While I'm a great fan of Lord Hendrix, the star spangled banned ain't my kind of song... But then again, I can't think of a single national anthem I actually enjoyed.

I LOVE national anthems - like I said in the other thread, the US, French and Italian are great, though I take back the German one, in hindsight I don't really like it that much, the Canadian one is better.

As for epic, it most definitely has to be the French, quite an amazing national anthem. Closely followed by the Star Spangled Banner - now that is one hell of an anthem.

I have no idea, though the French one sounds pretty good. Our one certainly deserves to be on the list of shame.

The UK doesn't have an official anthem does it?
Jerusalem is pretty awsome.

The UK started the trend for national anthems. England doesn't have an official anthem.

Soviet anthem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpKRd2xQeq8), by a distance. Written to inspire in the most epic of all wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Patriotic_War), and doesn't disappoint.

Given the history of the UK, a song that officially celebrates its ruler, which was first adopted in a time when monarch and state were synonymous, and which has continued unchanged to the present day, is as close as we get to an official national anthem. By more recently founded states' standards, we lack official structures, but we have in their place customs derived from the supposed supreme authority of the monarch.

We don't need to be "epic". Though some clearly do require an anthemic pedestal of Ben-Hurian bravado to stand upon for national stature's sake... :jumping: Look at meeeeeeeeeeeee!

I used to listen to quite a few of them when I was a tad younger. Found the Soviet and the Chinese ones to be the most "epic"

I can't lie, my two favorite national anthems are (in this order):

1) The Star Spangled Banner

2) Oh Canada

And I get to hear them sung right beside each other just about every time I watch a hockey game, and every time I watch the Jays.

And they both inspire very different feelings. The yank song always gives me that "determined" feeling that anybody who has ever been on an underdog sports team that has defied the odds and won the big game will surely recognize. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up while goose-bumps form on my arms.

My own anthem gives me a feeling akin to when you are camping (and I mean true camping, out in the bush, with only what you were able to carry on your back for 30 or 40km) and you wake up first thing in the morning and while the sun warms your face, you feel like a true explorer. Very warm and fuzzy.

Are you kidding?

Serbian national anthem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8dxhbSxkSY), no contest.

P.S. If you don't like the music, at least you can enjoy looking at Ana Ivanovic :laugh4:
