End of campaign?

What happens when you run out of turns but havent finished the game yet? I dont want to reach the end and have it all stop and loose everything. Can you keep on playing after you reach your limit of turns? if not, can you modify the game to let you do so?

You can keep on playing apparently for hundreds of years. I read that someone had played into the 1800's.

As Old Geezer pointed out, you can essentially keep playing indefinitely. It's just that scripted events (such as the invention of gunpowder, discovery of the New World, etc.) stop occurring after the first 225 turns or so.
