View Full Version : Most Annoying Battle Ever

I'm playing a GA campaign with the 1092 mod as the English. I launched a crusade to Palestine, put Lord FitzGilbert, an 8-star buttock kicker, in command. They capture it easily enough. I figure hey, they only have to hold 22 years for me to get ships to there, and its fairly developed.

The egyptians attack every year. They start with forces of around 1200, my 800 or so crusade army roundly hands them their heads for TWENTY ONE YEARS. Every time they slowly get stronger. The Egyptians go through three sultans in this period, and lose their best and brightest generals. The last year before I could possibly pull out, They attack my 868 man force with the staggering total of 4359 men. I fight it out.

For well over an hour. After the first 45 minuts or so I've lost all but my three units of crossbows, my catapult, two bowmen, 50 order foot, FitzGilbert with 18 chiv maas, and six urban milita. We proceed to smash through wave after wae of attacks, running completely out of missiles, but holding, until we're ALL engaged in melee combat with a couple units of saracens (I HATE THEM), FitzGilbert alone, urbans dead, order foot dead, half my archers dead, and with ONE MINUTE left on the INSANE 105 minute timer, the whole force routs as I try and move the valour 12 FitzGilbert out of combat to flank an incoming group of peasants.

GAH!

Edit: Oh yes, I forgot. 1977 enemy killed. Only 201 of them were prisoners that I put to the sword.

timers depend on the amount of reinforcements. There where probably something like 30 or 40 reinforcement regiments.....

Already had a 105 minute. The enemies were wandering in my arbs control zone, though... Lost 3 that day, killed no more than 400. But bad vices for the enemy general!

Annoying perhaps, but most certainly a memorable battle. A lot of games don't give you that sort of feeling.

I'll give you a less spectacular but equaly annoying battle.....as the Danes I had an utterly useless King. Poor ratings across the board and some dodgy V&V's. (odd, as his Dad was a fine King). So I decided that I'd send him off alone to fight the 500 or so Rebels waiting on top of a mountain in FInland.

His 20 Early Royal Knights proceeded to kill 197 and capture another 90 of the Rebel rabble despite being surrounded and the rest of them fled, leaving King Sweyn with 3 surviving Knights, Valour 4 (up from 1) and the Utterly Fearless and Skilled Risky Attacker virtues !

The man is a survivor - I took the hint !

Most annying games are when you seem to be in a 100% win situation and then your general gets killed... I hate it when everyone just runs away from battle while they are winning... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

Most annoying is when the AI attacks you time after time in the same province, every turn, with more men, which you ofcourse easily defeat, but you still have to fight out every battle every turn because the autofight feature costs way too many men their lives...

Yes, that's what was happening. I ended up killing (or capturing) their leader EVERY TIME, and routing them off the field, and the reinforcements routed as soon as they arrived. The reason that didn't happen that time was because he managed to run away. I would have kept playing from losing if FitzGilbert hadn't gotten Eager to Retreat. I mean WHAT THE HELL. He stayed until all the missiles were gone, he was alone in his unit, and we were down to something like 200 men against 2000. That's not eager to retreat! It was memorable, though http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I replayed it, killed the enemy commander, and watch in bemusement as the entire egyptian empire collapsed because I had systematically killed every heir and sultan they had.

I couldn't reinforce because I needed one more turn to connect them by navy to my Anglo-Frankish empire.
