View Full Version : Hi..got a few questions
Hello to all. I'm new here and just got MTW few days ago. I was hoping somebody can enlightment me :
1) Apart from the different starting amount of cash on each difficulty settings, are there other differences? (like AI bonues, etc).
2) Are they are uses for militias? I see the AI build lots of them but I always run them over with sergeants/men-at-arms. Seems totally useless to me.
3) I think the game lets you start with too much cash below expert. Even while maintaing massive building projects in all my provinces since turn 1, my cash reserve can easily run up to 5 figures within 10 turns. Eventually I would build stuffs without even considering costs. What else to go with my cash?
4) Are there any good mods out there to try out?
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I new to the game http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hi Casomyr and welcome to .org
1) In expert level I've heard that in battles all AI units get a +3 morale. Unsure if this is confirmed by CA.
2)I don't like urban militia but militia sergants are very good in general melee and also against cav.
One exception is that Alomhad Urban Militia are brillant. I had 3 full units of Knight Templars wiped out by 1 unit of AUM....I cried like a baby.
3)Your lucky to find that at the beginning...I never have enough.
4)Yeah they was a great list of the totalwar.com forum but that is currently down at the moment.

Hello Casomyr,
1. I find the battles are more of a challenge in Harder levels. AI flanking etc.
2. I only use Militia's when I'm stuck. Except the AUM's. They are class.
3. Cashflow depends on which faction. I found the Elmoheads very cash friendly and the French were always broke.
4. If you want a good mod look here http://www.respawn.co.uk
Giskard has done a nice jpb on the Empire mod. I played it last night for the first time and so far I really like it. Serious battles man http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
hope this helps,
Heggs.
Urban militia has a low upkeep cost and is therefore a good garrison force, to keep rebellions down (the building itself increase happiness). They also make good governor units (good leader stats).
In combat they can cause some damage when flanking, but I don't use them in my main stacks, just in emergencies.

1) Your Royal Line is affected a lot dependent on the difficulty level. The easier you play, the better generals your royal line will most likely have. The harder the level, the more culling you will have to do to get those better generals.
2) Urban Militia are a good force at the beginning of the game (better than peasants at least)until spearmen come along. Even after that they can be useful to stab them pesky spearmen in the back, plus they have more moral than regular spearmen. Just do not run head first into the spearmen with them, they will easily be cut down.
3) This can seem to be an overadvantage to some nations but others have it harder. The Danes for one seem to start with pretty low cash amounts unless you build up trade and take over Sweden right away on the Hard and Expert levels. But I have seen that sometimes it seems too easy for some nations early on, but with all that income, someone usually will come after you. So keep spending and building and hope it lasts.
last night i used urban militia in my early game quite a bit on the battlefield:
hold the enemy down with your spearmen.
have your militia on the flanks of your army.
attack the rear/flank of the enemy using a wedge formation.
make sure you pull them out of the combat after a short while (when they start losing too many men), and let them engage short after.
make sure they dont rout, or your troops will fall like dominoes!!
last night i had 2 units of spears, 1 viking, 1 alan mercs, and 2 urban militia.
formed a line right behind a forest with my spears/vikings. enemy approaches through the forest with an overwhelming force. after i kill the enemy general, i have 1 unit of urban militia skirmishing in the forest.
retreat when forces seem to overwhelm my sole unit of urban militia. they engage my line of spears/vikings. make sure my militia hits their flanks. then the enemy routs. all 1000 of them!! never saw so many men run on a totally flat field. my alan mercs chased them off the map.
this way i also decimated the danish royal knights on a bridge map. held them with my spears while i had my militia attack/retreat/attack them in the flank. wedge formation of course.

Found a mistake that I wrote above, Militia dont have higher morale than spearmen.
Key is to not build anything past town guard. You get a valor bonus per building level, but ONLY if you stop at building 2.
Valour 2 militia sergeants are the best shock troops in the game, imo. 4/5/4 A/D/C, and armor-piercing to boot. Best of all, they only cost 150 and 30 for upkeep!
Urban militia from tuscany can be VERY mean as well. They have 5 atk, 4 charge, and with +6 to morale, they'll RARELY break.
Halbardiers and pikemen, however, aren't really worth it. There's nothing they do that other troops can't do -- and do MUCH better.
Post patch everything will chance, of course.

Which is to say that nothing will change soon.
Baah
Those have been a great help...thanks guys!
Yeah those AUM are pain in the ass. I got chopped down unexpectly last night, almost broke the damn CD http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Wondering if those unit stats are historically accurate.
I did a search but couldn't find anything related : when your princes' come in service are their stats randoming chosen or effects of you past actions determine them?
Also yesterday I played a totally peaceful game (except for a few battles with rebels). I had fortress almost everywhere and discovered the master buildings like master bowyer does nothing! What gives?
