...the one where you invade a relatively lightly defended province chock full of goodies, hoping to take immediate vacant possession.
The enemy are routed in double quick time but unfortunately two ballista crew men and a bloke on a horse manage to make it back to the local fortification which just happens to be bristling with catapults, trebuchets etc and is likely to hold out for eight years - or indefinitely, whichever comes first.

To make use of the facilities or cash them in, a direct assault is required, often costing more men than the original battle did.
Even more if auto resolve isn't used. (In my case anyway).

As the subject heading says....

King Richard : St Juniper once said, "By his loins shall ye know him and
by the length of his rod shall he be measured." The length of my rod is a
mystery to all but the Queen, and a thousand Turkish whores, but the
fruits of my loins are here for all to see. I have two sons, Henry and
.... another one.
Step forward, Harry, Prince of Wales.

If yuo want to avoid this, be sure to surround the enemy before you attack and rout them.

If they have a much CAV it will be almost impossible to get them all but otherwise its usually works.

But as you wrote, it's strange that the 5 people getting away from teh battle can make such a difference (siege or diect control).

except of course that there are other invisible people in the castle that help the 5 people to defend the castle
