just let 'em hold their ground and surround the attacking enemies with good fast troops and cavalry :beam:

Phalanx is not exactly the best troop-type to enter a city. Plus, due to pathfinding issues, you can't enter a city in phalanx mode. Let them run in, halt them, drag a suitable square on the ground, and hope that they obey. Then press phalanx mode button. Always leave them on guard mode, except you tell them to attack with their short-swords (ALT+rightclick), which is generally not a good idea.

Don't leave them on guard mode against another phalanx though.

ok,
In custody and in defense mode when they enter a city, right?

Yes... remove them from phalanx mode until they enter the city, then replace them into the mode if possible. A phalanx marching down a tight avenue can actually be a dangerous proposition. In the worst case scenario you will have 120 armored swordsmen (depending on unit size) fighting in the assault rather than a Phalanx which is not a bad proposition anyway...

When you're fighting another phalanx, you want guard mode off so you can push forward, unless you are moving assault infantry, or cavalry to the rear.

I'd use Phalanx always in guard mode, except you want to attack with swords.

Against other phalanxes there is a bug that makes them just stand there and be cut down when on guard mode.

In my tests phalanx without guard mode always lost against the same unit with guard mode because it kept pushing forward into the pikes and suffered much more casualties. I would use guard mode off when facing non-phalanx units or when attacking the flanks or rear of an enemy phalanx.

Another observation was with formation: useing a square (15 deep on hughe size) instead of a line (6 deep) always resutled in a loss in custom battle (1 vs. 1 with identical phalanxes). That was due to the fact that the AI phalanx managed to get a couple of units behind my phalanx; what looked very odd BTW. I had then given Thorakitai Phalanx long pikes and the phalanx ability and used them in a square (10 deep) against various successor phalanxes. This time the result was as expected: the Thorakitai was able to push thorugh the center of the enemy phalanx very fast. I had then disbanded phalanx and guard mode and ordered them to mob up the enemy with swords. This worked very well against low and medium enemy phalanx.
