View Full Version : Time Limit, who uses it?

Does anyone use the time limit for their battles anymore? I personally thought the option was dumb so i turned it off immediately. Why would defenders win a battle after 30 min. from just sitting there???

I suppose technically I use it, but I have never had a battle won or lost due to the time limit. So, in that respect, no I don't use it.

Sometimes ... only if i dont feel like spending 6 hours a day fighting battles ...
Heck sometimes I just auto-calc just cause I dont feel like sitting any longer ...
Which means what i really would like is the ability to save in battle or between battles.

I use it because frequently I can get attacked by armies four to five thousand soldiers strong. Once, I was hit by over 9000 Egyptians.
It sucks to fight a 5 1/2 hour battle, when all the enemy does is approach, route, then brings the next wave. Over, and over again.
At least a time limit keeps it to just 2 hours or so.
I lost a few early battles that I was winning because the time limit expired so I turned it off right away. I can't imagine why you would want it on as it just encourages the ai to try to run away all the time.

never reached that limit; but I keep it active. Don't want skirmishes to last hours. 105 minutes for big battles is largely enough!!!

I've used it once only.
I was being attacked by a huge enemy force and wanted to inflict maximum damage rather than withdraw from the province. So I just placed my men on top of a forested hill and let the enemy come at me.
There is no way I wanted to charge my small force and route the surviving enemy troops (mostly archer & horse archer units), arrive exhausted on the far side of the map and then face fresh heavy cavalry re-inforcements - in the open !
Thank God for the Ctl-T option !.

I don't use it. Sometimes it takes a lot of moving the troops to get exactly what you want and this takes time.

I forgot to turn it off. Once that was indeed very usefull. In the campaign I was attacked by a larger army, still I was pretty shure I'd win. But before I knew it most of my army routed, I brought all of my reinforcement (4 "green" vikings) wich chased the pursuing attackers away. Next thing that happend was the AI brought fresh troops at the far end of the map - easily enough to beat me - but what did it do? Yep, took position on a hill far away and stood there, not doing anything. If the timer had been on, they'd probably still be standing there.....

I have it turned on, but haven't won or lost a battle due to a time limit. I use it mostly as a rough guide to how long the battle is going to last for, as so far it has usually ended with about 1/6 of the time to go.

timer is a lifesaver when the enemy has a humongous force and decides to attack your castle and spends the time limit walking in circles around your castle, getting shot up.

but how is this realistic? why would an army just pick up and leave after 30 min were up??? What did they have army unions or something?

Well ... if your fighting the English maybe they wanted a cup of tea ... other than that .. your point.

maybe winter set in, really really fast...
i don't know, battles would generally only go on until dusk anyway, perhaps it's supposed to represent that? more likely it's just there to stop a fight going on long enough to get tedious/frustrating

i keep on forgetting to turn it off but i think its a little stupid like someone said u could just sit around for like 30-60 minutes just sitting there while the dumbass enemy just does nothing

I can't believe people have run outta time on the offensive? what do you do?
I've had time in every offensive to drive the enemy from the field. This often includes bring archers to bear and letting them use all their ammo, this often includes cat and mouse games where the computer moves from hill to hill as I approach his flanks... and yet my time has never run out. (I had 1 battle where the timer was almost out when I finished, but I think I was on defense)
besides, why isn't a timer of some sort historically accurate? (it made a little more sense with seasonal turns), but why should the attacker have all the time in the world to dance around? I say if he can't drive me from the field in x minutes, or visa versa, then he clearly hasn't dispalyed enough dominance to take the province. The only counter to this would be in games with those 9000 man armies, (as the 16 units at once rule makes it hard to play those out quickly), but I never get into battles with more than 2-3 stacks per side)
and one time I did win a battle simply by avoiding my ai attackers with some horsies, (it was cheap, I'll admit but some sort of bug had hurt me just prior to the battle, so I thought it was justice to manipulate the system)

I have it on and have only needed it once when the Byzantines attacked with a huge force and my only hope was to sit on a hill with my saracen infantry and wait for them to come to me. He couldn't decide how to attack and the timer ran out. If there'd been no timer I would have had to attack him just to force a result.

I use time limit.
once in MI I turned it off and the a.i. attacked me and had horse archers. that battle lasted for more then 2 hours and the a.i. and i didnt have more then about 10-14 units each.
In MTW i won as a defender cuz the time ran out. I should defend a bridge. I setup my men, hit start button, the a.i. runs up to the bridge and just sat there and they wasnt in my arbs range. If i wouldnt have the time limit on i would still have bn fighting that battle i think. was maybe a month ago. I would never have walked over that bridge cuz i was the defender.

They call on me and ask me to take my place with them in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.
I use it all the time, but have never reached the point of it running out. My impression is that it makes the ai a bit more "decisive" in battles, i.e. that the ai takes the time left into account, when I compare it to the previous battles when I didn't use it. Might be a matter of luck just as well, I guess.
i havent used it so far although i don't like the long skirmish battles...
would you lose as an attacker if you hadnt had the enemy army rout before the timelimit? or is it a matter of casualties too?

I use it, Ive only lost once because the enemy was reteating and we had a small family emergency, so I left the game running.
When I came back I had lost due to time limit.
ARG that was huge battle. But then I had the chance to wup the french all over again.
