Does anyone knows who Satres is?

I started a romani campaign and, after conquering Massalia and being at peace with Carthage I decided to go for Luvavoaeta...now as i was getting there this Eleutheroi full stack shows up led by this Satres guy. Besides the celtic spearmen etc etc there were also some neeto's and a solduro's unit...and most of this army has 2 silver chevron.

Now this guys are much more experienced and homogeneous than my army. I decided to let him attack me and i won even though i lost alot of men, but i basically vanquished them and killed Satres.

Having dealt with this guy i decided to siege Lovavoaeta. As the turn ends i get attacked by.... SATRES and his double silver chevron muchachos again!!!!

So now i have mr. "came back from the dead" and the oppidum's garrison in a total of over 5000 men against my 1700 something. It went of course the wrong way not to mention that i had to fight this in the middle of a huge forest covering the whole battle map and he overwhelming power of the enemy.
I lost my army led my faction leader and another general.

As i only had one standing army it took me a few turns to gather another army and as i am getting close to Luvavoaeta...Satres is there again and his army is fully replennished (they suffered around 1500 casualties on the last battle). I try diplomacy on the city...and it worked . I had some money and i bribed them successfully.

So now....i have this "übber" Eleutheroi full stack creeping on my territory...so my question is...
WHO IS THIS SATRES GUY!?!?!?

He's a part of the scripted "Central European Defense" which prevents the AI factions from going into ahistorical areas. Like a German conquest of Greece in 260BC, or the Sauromatae reaching the Atlantic.

If you want to take out Satres, you have to kill him and besieged Iuvavoeta in the same turn. Otherwise he respawns with his full super-stack again.

Thanks....so...since now i bribed and kept Lovavoaeta....all i have to do is to slay him again right?

I believe so, once you hold it he shouldn't re-appear once dead.

Just out of curiosity... would it be possible to bribe Sartes? :idea2:

Or is he one of those annoying unbribable generals?

It'd be funny if you could keep on bribing him and make a sort of clone army...

He would probably cost tons of money and die the next turn do to the hardcoding (that automatically kills great generals that have been bribed).

I think at least you should have much much more mnai before you can bribe him.

You can always do like I did in my Sweboz campaign. It´s a bit like cheating, but hey, who here has got any morals anyway?
I filled Iuvavoaeta with 2 good spies, so I had a 89% chance of opening the gates in case of attack. Then I gathered a small army of just 4 Herunautoz (Germanic Swordsmen) and 1 Speutagardaz (Germanic Pikemen). I waited until Satres and his army was sitting just outside the city, and then I attacked it.
I rushed my Swordsmen through the gates, and attacked the defenders. Meanwhile my pikemen marched around the city, and took up position in a street that Satres army would have to take if they were to reach the city plaza. By the time I had killed the defenders and taken the plaza Satres army had entered the city, but my pikemen held them off for 3 minutes, and so I won the battle. Since retreating rebel armies are destroyed, Satres and all his men dissapeared forever, and I had won a city guarded by over 2500 men using just 5 units and 2 spies.
Of course, this strategy relies on the fact the the garrison of the city is quite weak, otherwise you are screwed. I was lucky, because for some reason the city had only about 300 defenders, and not the usual 1500.

In my last Romani campaign, I found Satres heaps of fun, and quite useful.

I'd fulfilled all Marian reform conditions, and was just waiting until the right year clicked over. I had established secure borders, and was developing my infrastructure and economy. But my army felt . . . restless. Cue Satres.

A lot of the time during a campaign you might find that when you're ready to attack with full stacks the enemy sends 2 or 3 units against you, while when they attack with full stacks your main army is somewhere else. Satres allows you (when you have the time and men free) to send the army of your choosing against quality opposition, confident that you'll be meeting a full stack with a full stack.

Satres is quite good at "weeding out" those troops who are, let's face it, crap. If you get all your rubbish troops killed, then obviously you'll be left with good ones. Train them up, drill with Satres, re-train and re-drill, and you can get yourself a real good silver chevron army.

I really want to bribe him... is it worth it? I do like the sound of that 'natural selection' strategy, Apgad. Might try that. I DO want Iuvavoaeta, though... Teskatos! Whoo! They are the only unit I've used that could break throught the FRONT of an Epirote Elite Phalanx, so having a steady supply would be good. Plusd, they're heavy infantry, and tbh, I'm bored of using Samnitii Milites as my Allied Heavy Inf. pairing. Also waiting for Celtae Vollorix, as that would also fill a gap.

I tried to bribe him just out of curiosity with several of my best diplomats but it didnt work.

I got him with(again), with a newlly formed armey and it was quite easy. I kept him busy with my principes and pedites extraordinarii while i flanked him from both sides with my triarii...only used cavalry for pursuit. Only one man lived to tell the tale he he he
Of course that the fact that I managed fight the battle on mostly open terrain worked on my favour.

This guy( and i could swear there were Ents helping him on those thick forests) cost me me over 4000 men and 3 generals (2 faction leaders).

i have bribed satres 3 times in my current Aedui campaign. it´s easy if your diplomat is high level enough. but it costs tons of money, so i had to cheat a little to do so. and the best is: in the next round you´ll have another full stack elite army you can bribe! and this won´t stop until you take the corresponding cities.

but in turn you get heaps of 2 silver chevron units, especially the Nietos and alpine phalanxes that he fields are a very valuable addition to any gallic army, especially if you want to contain or conquer rome. alpine phalanxes rock at defensive bridge battles!

and if you should manage to bribe Satres himself and keep him, then you´ll probably get hold of a super general that is able to conquer almost everything and win every defensivve battle easily.

I used a cavalry unit to close all the gates, but that was when I used a ram, rather than spies.

And those pikemen are tough.

Never successfully bribed Satres, but I did get the defender of Luguow to join me. He then joined my army besieging his former capital and his lugiawhassit swordsmen led the assault. The guy got +2 command for fighting Roman scum and +2 for fighting Carthy scum, so he was a great addition to my family and stayed with me until he died in battle against a Ptoly invasion of Italy ~20 years later.
Now THAT was a fun battle. . .

Besiege the city and wait for the loitering rebel general to attack you. When he attacks you, the city garrison will queue up as reinforcements. Launch the battle map and pray for two things:

1) That the reinforcements won't show up in time, or not at all. (a besieged garrison will be destroyed if defeated)
2) That you don't get an post-battle CTD
