Mmmmh, the good old Pirates!(1989) remains number 1 in my heart, but TW series as number 2 & Deus Ex as number 3 would make my podium.
With good diplomacy, ol'Pirates would be beaten.

War is not about who is right, only about who is left
Well, MTW is in my top 3 with Civ3 and Baldurs Gate II. I can't deside for the excact position though.

Congrats, kids, just make this game even better!!! And, yes, you got that right, the best way to do that is hanging out here, handling the moaning, griping, cursing etc. of all us dedicated fans.
BTW, has this turned out to be a "best of all times games" thread? If so, I would like to add my all-time favorites too: Civ2, HOMM2, MOO, MOM, Return to Krondor, Baldur's Gate, MTW, Defender of the Krown, Europea Universalis 2 and a couple more.
Actually, MTW with some EU2 elements (diplomacy, world map come in mind) would outgun each and every other game in that list.

lol, last time I said that you remarked (fairly) that pigs would fly before...

Attention: News buletin:
Scientists in the IBM (In Big Money) Research Center in Richville, Richmond, USA, have reported that they invented a method that can produce reliable and relatively stable flying pigs.
The report sais an entairtenment software maker is the first potential client, but they seem to have some problems with QA procedure, so they have stalled their offer until further notice.
Further reports suggest that IBM might have really re-invented the wheel here, but we'll have to wait for that to be confirmed officialy.
For EFG international, this is Rosacrux.

GAH!
Truth is... Al Gore is the driving force behind CA. And it shows. Who other than the Inventor of the Internet could come up with such a masterful game? Who else can shoulder the cunning and intellect to forge such a concept? What else did youz think he was doing after the chads got pregnant and full of dimples? Get fat???

Congratulations!
Well deserved CA ...
However, for me that crown belongs to Shogun, but I have no problem if you guys get the deserved credit in the second run.
Shogun was where CA created most of the innovation, and the game that I played more than any other one during the last years. MTW is mostly only bigger and better, but lacks some of the elegance of its older cousin.
el_slapper mentioned Pirates! Yes, that is my all time favourite too. no other game has ever got me so immersed. Other unforgettable ones for me were Defender of the Crown, Elite , Aces of the Deep, Panzer General, Ultima Underworld 2 and Grand Prix Legends.

I still haven't been pulled in as much as I was with Shogun, but this is still a great game. Congrats!
Way to self-promote
Congratulations GilJaysmith, LongJohn, Eat Cold Steel, Target, and the rest of the team at Creative Assembly. A very well deserved award I would say, especially with the team's continued efforts to improve the game and correct problems. Hopefully, that improved version will be available in time for the influx of new players we are likely to see now, and there will be further improvements of the game down the road in the coming months. Why stop at #1? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Doesnt anyone find it a bit odd that if MTW was ranked in a similar list of grestest PC games of all time for the "real pc gamer" e.g. pc gamer U.S. MTW would be ranked like 500th? I think that may have alot to do with the fact that most Americans are largely unfamilar with European Medeival history. Personally I'm from the U.S. and find pc gamer U.S. would more than likely put some lame first person shooter game at the very top. Anyhow MTW is no doubt up there with Civilization and the like.

Hey I resemble that remark
Richard, I really don't think it is necessary to care one bit about history over there. This is a GREAT game (assuming you like strat and tactics). The devs did a fabulous job (ok am I starting to sound like I am nosing something or other?). All you really need to like is horsies and knights and swords and spears and such to like this game.
Congratulations for the PC Gamer UK!
For a broader view have a look at the Game Rankings - The Game Review Database. It averages all magazine reviews and is a very good tool.

Yea I think its a great concept and a fine game, but most kids out there like the blood and gore stuff. I think MTW is restricted to a smaller audience.

The game definately needs some correcting. What part of Ohio are you from, I'm from Columbus?
You know, they should make people play this game for history class.
Not because it is historically accurate, but because it is closeish enough that people will be inspired to go out and learn some actual history.
It finally let me work out where the heck the HRE was (I had thought it must have been another name for Byzantium) and it made me realise that the history I knew made it sound like there was nothing but barbarians east of France (and the French were close enough to barbarians)

Ive been an ardent stratagy(RTS & Turned Base) player, played everything worth playin form C&C series, Dune series, might and Magic and heroes of might and magic clones, Warcraft series, Dark reign 1 & 2,Age of empiers 1 & 2:TC,Total Annihiliation, etc but in truth they arnt TRUE RTS's as they are more about economy effiency and "unit production stratagies". Most of thoase games are absolutely awesome but never allowed for the true stratagiest in my to florish as MTW & SHOHUN did. desptie the bugs (looking forward to Path http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif) and the use of GameSpy :9 urrrgrgrgrg spwerrg I still rate this game as number 1 next to Doom 1 (

I disagree immensely. Both as a kid from the U.S. and as a history major, (perhaps that makes me biased)...
But seriously, WTF are you talking about? No history, NONE! NONE AT ALL! er, a little bit too excited there, *wipes foam from mouth*, but back to my point, no kid in the U.S. gets anywhere without some history, and history of england, (at least), if not europe, is always discussed... [edit: I had to leave mid post, but anyway, point is that medieval Europe history has a huge draw in the U.S., after all, most of us here trace our ancestry to various parts of Europe. No doubt the draw isn't the same as when you still live in Europe, but as I express below, your point simply seems null to me].
Before I even had my infatuation with history I'd done a project on the crusades, (like 4th grade), etc. etc. etc.
I think a FPS may rank highly in the U.S. but its not for blood and gore... don't get too uppity as a strategy gamer. Half life has alot to offer, (I don't even play it, as I mentioned below, I have my own team based online game). But the fact is, playing with other people is fun, and MTW doesn't really allow that, as the heart of the game is purely single player.
When I'm not playing MTW I play Tribes 2, an awesome team based fps, wherein you play capture the flag, etc. I love both games for their strategy, though I think the strategy involved in tribes 2 is alot more complex, (sadly), than the strategy in MTW, and especially than the strategy in the battles online. (I'll admit i play a modded tribes 2, but my point remains, fps aren't just the game of the vulgar mob).

well deserved congratulations.

indeed
Not suprising.
But let me add another game to the list....
Starfleet Command-II
Based on the Starfleet Battles tabletop game, the game has amazing depth, though it has been plagued with problems...Not the least was Interplays inability to grasp that the game was released about 6 months to soon. With any luck at all Taldren Studios (the game developer) may get the backing to truely develope the game further and include all of the elements that made SFB such a phenominal board game eventually.
(SFC-II is missing the minor races and Andromedans of SFB)..With the upcoming SFB-III, though a TNG era game should have a much more robust, and dynamic "Dynaverse" (read stratigic game) then the previous offerings. We SFC fans are hoping that somewhere down the road Taldren willget the bucks to truely make the ultimate SFC version.
The game is more or less MOD friendly including at this point well over 500 3d ship models made by users to plug into the game... Warning..SFB is not Trek, and SFB players don't likje being lumped in with trekers/trekies... SFB diverged from Paramount Trek Cannon about ohhhhh 15 years ago. (good thing too... made for a much more intersting game)
(yes, it is a tactical, and stratigic game..the players and server ops have taken the game far beyond what the developers ever thought they would...Uh yea, heavy duty fan, how did ya guess?)
Also, the Mechwarrior series, currently under the banner of Microsoft games. MW-4 Mercenaries is due out this next week, and while purely a tactical game on the surface, players have created an online stratigic universe based apon FASA's Battletech universe that has been going strong since the days of MW-2 Mercs...Call it about..sheesh umm 10 years now...I'm feeling my age all of a sudden...
(hey, MOM heads...MOM-II IS IN DEVEOLPMENT..gonna be a couple years yet though....)

Well deserved kudos. Once the multiplayer issues get addressed and hopefully a few tweaks to the sp issues with the patch, then I feel MTW will be tough to top in it's genre. Patience on the patch gentlemen. As me pappy used to tell me, "Why don't you have enough time to do it right, but plenty of time to do it over". We'll see the patch when it's ready.

I'm in my first campaign where the AI factions truly started to form into empires. (I use the matteo cheat every 25-30 years or so to get a full color picture of just whats going on)..
Almohads are out of the iberian peninsula, byzantines have regained lost ground to the turks, (who are now wiped out by the egyptians), the novrogods have been stuck in their corner, now hemmed in by me, (poland), and the byzantines who appear to be massing in preparation for the mongol hordes, Englands empire would hold if not for the stupid french, (who keep squabbling with england and I over lands which can not possibly belong to them, [as they allied the almohads, turncoats!], and there are at least 5 rebel areas in what would be france today...
I'm preparing armies to save the catholic world from the almohads, (using imported goods into their own lands to fund my buildup)...
Its just so purdy... despite all the complaints to be had about this game, Empire games rule! And MTW is definetely a good showing for them all, epic battles are so much more epic when you know that defeat means the spreading of muslim power across western europe!
