Can anyone give me a simple, easy to follow guide to how to take and give provinces/settlements from and to other factions? I couldnt find one to give me a detailed simple guide after searching...is it as i feared and just as simple as using FD to make one faction give me a settlement, then i use FD again to give it to another?

I don't use FD, but this works fine for me:

Offer the faction you want the settlement from 40000 mnai for it. They will agree to this most of the time. Then give it to the faction you want to have it as a gift with 10000 mnai.

You can of course use "add_money 40000" for yourself and "add_money internalfactionname, -40000", if you don't want the faction to have the money.

That's basically it, yeah. I've found sometimes though the receiving faction won't take a gifted settlement without giving some money to them and asking for map info in return.

Also move_characters is helpful to facilitate gifting as well.

Also, when I feel a faction is not expanding into certain rebel settlements (i'm looking at you KH and why you never take Crete), I create_unit siege engine, use move_character to transport it. Attack settlement, auto_win attacker and then gift the settlement to the faction.

You don't usually need to use FD to give a province away, just give it with a gift of 10,000 mnai and they'll usually take it. Multiple provinces sometimes requires more than one dialogue to give them away; most factions for example, won't take five provinces with 10,000 mnai in one go.

Since I usually play without FOW I find it easier to offer/demand map information instead of money. No fooling around with my economy and they always accept.

And please remember to create_unit some additional garrisons for those whose regions you change, the rebellions cause a lot of crashes, and relogging to the main menu, while not necessary, resets the AI´s strategy to better utilize its new possesions. I also often use the freed slaves and such which I gain upon taking over the province to clear the area of any armies belonging to the faction which previously held it, then disband them and force a ceasefire.

The accept or we will attack diplomacy option is also effective if you would like to avoid bestowing more money to a faction, although most factions could need some money after such an exchange, to install a new government and pay for the additional troops which expense often exceeds what the newly gained settlement can provide in the beginning. And you could always take the money back via the console if needed of course.

Good point, though it's usually easier to just use move_character to clear out the old garrison, rather than attacking them.

True, much easier, I will do that in the future, although in the case of an especially strong faction the campaign map would at times be more balanced without those armies.
By the way, now that we are talking about FD I´ve also used, with mixed luck, the mini mod to force peace between two contenders by forcing protectorates on both of them, causing them to halt their quarrel, then breaking the alliances. A relog would seem a good idea then, to reset any standing orders, and given the right circumstances it can maintain a lasting peace. Although most often the aggressive AI reacts just as we have come to expect, and war begins anew.

How do you move characters again? It confuses me lol...i get the bit about using the old names for the factions (eg. Selecids are Romani and so on) but i've never got the move character thing to work..am i doing it wrong?

1) Open the console with the ` or ' or ~ key.
2) Type: show_cursorstat - to get your x,y co-ordinates
3) Type: move_character "[firstname lastname]" x,y - to move the character to the co-ords given to you above

On naming; when they're not as they appear, open the Data\text\names.txt to do a lookup on the internal name. For example many single-named Qarthdastim FMs have the lastname "ofcarthago".

Those with three names are "firstname secondnamethirdname". Romans are all "firstname Romanvs".
