I wonder do the hoplites really fight in the way that a shieldwall animation does? They really can advance or even run but still maintaining that perfect close formation? Or hoplites really fight in close formation in defensive mode, when they advance they still fight closely but not in the close tight formation as they do during defensive stance?

I always struggle in choosing between ALX.exe and BI.exe, because of the shieldwall that BI can offer. The hoplites looks really cool and fearsome when they advance slowly with the shieldwall ability. But can you guys give your knowlege regarding my question?

I don't think it was common to run while in the phalanx/shieldwall formation, and it would most likely be very difficult to maintain the formation if running. I heard somewhere on these forums a long time ago that that's why the Persians were so surprised at how the Greeks advanced across the field at a jog at Marathon.

That is one good reason not to use shieldwall ability for hoplites. It's a little ahistorical to see them running in shieldwall formation.
