I'm sure this has happened to many of you, but I'm still reeling from the impact...
Fairly early in my English campaign, I sent out my only heir to the throne and his army of about 700 well-equipped men to deal with about 300 rebels. Even though he was my only heir, and my king was aging, I had good reason to feel I'd win, and if not, I could always retreat. I had no plans of sending him into the melee.
Anyway, as we are slowly advancing upon the rabble-rousers, I hear that dreaded sound of a catapult releasing. "What?" I say to myself. "These guys have a catapult?" About that time, the one boulder comes crashing down on my prince and he dies instantly.
My army panicked and scattered, and I never could rally them. I was heartbroken, lol.
Good news is my old king got jiggy wit' it and gave me another heir before he popped off!

that only happened to me once when i was bout 20 feet way from a catapult and killed my fricken king.
You have to watch those Heat Seaking Royal Blood Bolders. They are nasty.
Saw something about them on the History Channel the other day. I guess they did a real good job of Kicking royal butt back then.
Oh and I also saw the Report On pigs flying in Eastern United states. Was very very intersesting.

Am I the only one that finds ballistas virtually harmless until you attack them? They pretty much can't hit squat... but if you dare close with them to take it out, your bound to get a bolt right square in the middle of your formation. (not that this doesn't make sense, mind you, a 10 ft shoot should be pretty easy)...
But it makes using your royal knights, (the only cav often times early on, and thus the only practical way to take out artillery), rather dangerous.

True, but their dangerous at range...
My point is that ballistas have been entirely harmless in my experience, (unless their of the castle tower sort), unless I closed with them to destroy them. They can't hit the broad side of a barn at range, unlike arbalests.
Get light cav asap! hobilars, jinettes, mtd sgts, anything! but never use royal knights to charge down a siege engine! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
(well, if you like the heir anyway!) http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
The last words of a US civil war general seem appropriate here.
"Bah! They couldn't hit a barn at this dist..."

GAH!!!
Don't use the prince to charge a ballista, it aims for the leader and kills in one shot no matter how many lives the prince has.
That is a perfect way to kill a prince...
