View Full Version : Director's cut of Variations on Romano-Parthian Slaughter
Hello, I finally had time at work yesterday to put together a director's cut of my film, Variation's on Romano-Parthian Slaughter, which I entered into the video contest. I had had a few requests for it, and here it is, 22 minutes of cataphract on legion action. Because of length, I've uploaded it in high quality here, instead of youtube:

Hope you guys enjoy it. For those who haven't seen the original or many of the other great and very creative entries for the video contest, see the stickied thread up top.

...You know Stupac, you could actually make a RTW-based feature film entirely based upon these principles.
Very, very well done.

That really was magnificent, I can't say this enough.
You deserve those awards if you get them.
I just watched the whole movie
You have talent ...yes you have :2thumbsup::2thumbsup::2thumbsup:
Thanks guys, appreciate the responses. Feature length would be fun, but a lot of work, and I'd need a good story. Plus, I'm not sure how I could fit together the story, I suppose I could use titles or voice acting, but the RTW engine doesn't really support any scenes except warfare, and there needs to be in between scenes in a good story to connect the battles. For example, I was thinking of doing a film based off of Julius Caesar's conquest of gaul (which I just finished reading his version of the event so it is fresh in my mind), but I'm not sure how I would connect the various battles. Just a dry explanation title between them or is there a way I could portray meetings of Caesar and his officers and him and the gallic chieftains using the engine. Also, I have difficulty sometimes getting the AI to behave properly so I'd probably have to use multiplayer, and some of the battles would be difficult to portray without making a custom map (which I have no knowledge on how to do though I'm sure I can figure it out). I'll have to think on it some more, but I'll take any ideas anyone has. I'd also be interested in any non-roman stories of the classical period that I could realistically portray, I would prefer a story seldom told of a far away and largely forgotten people.

How did you do this, anyway? Just had two people play the two sides under your direction?

I think he just set the standards for RTW video AAR's.

No, I just fought the battle against the AI (I was playing Romani), I wanted to portray a Roman defeat but I didn't want the AI screwing up the formations, but I was just playing around so I didn't do very well. I had never done anything with the movie cam before or recording so I wasn't terribly worried how good the battle turned out, since I figured it would just be a good test to get a feel for things. Turned out ok, but I'm not really satisfied and I ended up spending a lot more time than I expected on it. I'm glad you guys enjoy it, I couldn't really tell how exciting it is because I had replayed those segments of my hour of raw video so many times I was sick of them. I'm sure it would have turned out better if I hadn't been so lazy, but I'm never really at home anymore between work, car, and bars. I'll try to split it and upload it to youtube, maybe along with my director's cut of Rot3SK.
That reminds me, I have a director's cut of my other entry: Romance of the 3 Successor Kingdoms. I'll post it again here so you guys don't have to sift through the video contest thread:

I'm sorry, I wrote that hastily, should have put the title before the acronym, Rot3SK is Romance of the 3 Successor Kingdoms, I just didn't feel like typing it out, then I figured I had to on the next line or nobody would know what was talking about but I didn't go back and correct it. Funny, because I type too much as it is. Thanks for the compliments, you guys are going to give me a big head before too long.

That is pretty damn awesome stupac.
Another great and enjoyable video Stupac! (Romance of 3 successor kingdoms)
Thank you, once again.
I will use this opportunity to petition EB team to remove "Snuggles" unit from the game.
That bear is just like kensai unit from STW and can single handedly wipe out full stack of my elites.

If you did something like this, Julius Caesar or other story it would be insane.
I really would love to see something like that. If you will start such project I can help you out with arranged MP battles.
Your videos are really good. Downloading directors cut right now.
I feel in a manner the subject material of EB is too somber and with all the pain, anxiety and stress there is in the world today, I don't feel I need to exacerbate things. Thus I have placed anxiety relieving audio-visuals in my films, such as snuggles or a tunefully inclined inebriated altar boy to expedite this. Sometimes I've dedicated entire films to this worthwhile effort, such as this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5xmpKHnZiM&feature=user) version of Variations on Romano-Parthian Slaughter.
I would like to put together a larger film, with a better overall story. Perhaps when I'm ready I'll post a thread in the AAR section for a little feedback and help would be good, especially in organizing battles. Yeah, the only ones I can think of to do atm would be Caesar or Hannibal, two of my favorite historical figures of the time period, but I'm sure there is a compelling, less known story out there to look for. But, as I said I'm a little concerned about how to technically connect the story from battle to battle. Ah well, I'm sure there is a way.

Can't complain, as I sure cracked up at the surrealistic absurdity :laugh4:
Hannibal would be a good one to do, but you MIGHT also be able to pull off doing one about Alexander, too, or Mithradates IV Eupator. (or was it VI? I can't remember right now, blargh). Sulla might also be interesting, though I don't know how you could pull off the Social War.

Excellent movie mate! Congrats!
I'm liking this full length film idea, I want to get going on it, so I've posted a thread over in the AAR section.

If you would like to help me out with historical consulting or brainstorming, head on over.
