View Full Version : One way excommunication???
I have just started a new campaign after I finished my Byzantine one. I took under my control Germany.During the first couple of years I raised agriculture and mining camps in my lands without having no agressive movement against any of my neihgbours. Then Poland attacked me. I lost a province and they lost one to me as well. Next year I recieved Popes warning. Having two years until the deadline I recaptured my province but the polish counterattacked and recaptured what I had conquered from them...finaly next round I was excommunicated...well ok, I thought I was still in war with the polish, even though they started it. And the provinces were at the time as before the war. Of course I believed that I was excom. so would the Polish be...but...
but i think you would get an excomm statement when another faction has been excommed, right?
the whole excomm deal is like walking on eggs...

just do what i do and go kill the pope if you get excommunicated his armys is always crap so just go for him.
So,the AI Catholic factions are only excommunicated when attacking another AI Catholic faction? Not against the gamers faction? If it is so, then that is a serius disadvandge for the gamer and a nasty bug.
anybody have any idea how to get "de-excommunicated?"
1. kill the pope
2. kill your king
poland is the worst of the catholic factions to fight against in protracted wars because the pope is heavily weighted in their favour (translate- always expect that warning to come up)
against the other factions you usually got 2-4 years before the warning pops up
the ai can be excommunicated for attacking you as far as im aware
ive had germany get into the popes bad books when attacking me when ive been italy or poland for example
incidently, making an alliance with the pope is another way to null excommunication, you dont always have to kill the pope

3. Wait the required 20 years before attacking (or defending against?) a catholic province again.
But by that time the other catholic factions will have probably sent crusade after crusade against you, and you may be down to nothing. Best bet, dont get excommunicated if you can help it. Take other catholic enemies over quick so the Pope doesnt have time to react. If he does react before you have downed an enemy, killing him off with an assassin is always a useful thing to do.
4. Attack non-catholic factions and win. This seems to help reduce the time you have to wait until you are allowed back into the church.

The Strat Guide mentions getting the Pope to ally with you as a third option for Re-Communicating, although I've never tried it.

I just made a small mod & i was playing the english & managed to stay very small. I never had any problems with the pope at all since I was very small. If a smaller faction makes war on you either just defend or kill them off quick to avoid excomm(its very hard as the HRE)

I thought it said wait 10 years. Most popes
are wimps. I've rarely seen one over 4 stars.
Die you scumbag pope.
Insolent do you mean that the Pope will excommunicate the stringest of the two catholic factions which are in a war?

That's the impression I got from my many attempts at campaign play with the HRE. As long as I was fairly small, the Pope would give me some leeway, but as soon as I had grown to a certain size, then WHAM! Warning/ ex-communicated every time I moved into at least one enemy-controlled province - even if it was one of my own provinces and I still controlled the castle, ie the damn Pope didn't even let me defend my own territory.
Meanwhile my French enemies were walking across my border again and again without any excommunion taking place (and no, I was not yet excommunicated at that time myself).
Have you ever played with the French and tried to attack Germany? I think that I will try it out...lets see if he will excom me being his precius Polish...

it all depends on size gentlemen. That's the only thing the pope considers. If a big faction attacks a small faction or vice versa, the pope always excomms the bigger faction ALWAYS. For example, playing the French have you ever noticed that when you attack the English provinces in your land you don't get warned? This is because at this point you are smaller than the English.
But when you have more provinces, you get excommed immediately. So just make sure you're smaller than your enemy if you're gonna make war.

well I'll share my story again briefly.
quite simply I was poland, I attacked france, (germany had already gotten excom'd and been relegated to italy, italy just rolled over as the germans migrated south)...
After 2 successful offensives against the french, during which they'd not counter attacked, or tried to lift sieges, or anything, they got excom'd by the pope. What a nasty bastard, I guess thats the advantage of playing the poles..
Unfortunately he recently threatened to excom me, so I guess my charms are wearing off.. Still the fact remains, the french were excom'd for doing nothing at all, I simply attacked them. Rather hilarious, in a pethetic kinda way.

I think someone mentioned the fact that, a high-star inquistor could burnt he Pope. Hmmm... why not put the pope to stake then? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Make sure you are not 50% larger than the enemy, then you will not get the warning, but normally you would if you attack a second time.
Remember that only one excomm or warining can be in play at any time. So if the HRE has been warned or excommed then just go on a killing spree, or if you have been warned from attaking Aragon, then go and kick some Danish/Polish/whatever ass.

BTW, Danish Crusades are true to history.

If you're excommunicated it's too late for this. This only works to stop getting excommed in the first place.

Really? I didn't know that. This changes things!!

yea ex communication is a great thing. defend your homeland against an indaver and your ex communicated, so i suppose the only way not to be ex communicated is to let the enemy destroy your lands in which case you lose the game. CA certainly has given some thought to the concept of ex communication.
