View Full Version : Retraining Units

After watching the conclusion of Shampoo Samaurai last week, I got nostogic for STW and dusted off my CDs and tracked down the v1.12 patch.

Now, I've fired up RTW and played MTW2 off and on over the last couple of years and man I had forgotten how simplified everything is in STW. I spent about five minuets trying to repossition my attacking units *grin*

Anyway, a couple of questions that I hope a lurker can answer.

When the Hatamoto unit (personal bodyguard) takes losses, they are automaticly replaced. Are these replacements free? Does the unit incure upkeep koku?

If memory serves me well, merging units that did not entirely deplete one of the units only became available after vanilla STW. Is this correct, or am I doing something wrong? Which unit should I drop onto the other when one of the units has an armor or weapon upgrade?

Thanks in advance. I'm even considering writing up an Imagawa campaign story (as I was lucky enough to partisipate in the cooperative campaign that Maltz put together)

I believe the Hatamoto replaces itself and the service is free of charge.. you do lose the honour they may have build up though, because the new guards are 'fresh'. I don't know if the Daimyo unit has a koku upkeep or not.

I don't recall having a problem with one unit suddenly being depleted when being merged with another, but then it's been a long time since I played vanilla STW (my red box is currently loaned out to a friend). I'm not sure on that one.

As for which unit should be dropped into another, I don't think it matters, at least in terms of weapon/armor upgrades. Puzz3D or someone else will correct if I'm wrong, but I believe that armor & weapon upgrades are tracked separately per man, not per unit.

I only recall honour (and morale?) being tracked individually.

I think that it also applies for armor and weapon upgrades, Maeda. If more than half of the unit has them, you will see the little icon.

Very intresting subject. ~:) I remember that I used to know when to merge units etc. to get 'free' weapons, armour, and honour. Quite silly to do such stuff in a campaign though, but I wonder how it really works.:book:

I thought that armour and weapons were tracked individually as well. It was my understanding that just because a unit's icon shows it has upgraded weapons/armour, doesn't mean that every man in the unit has them (unless of course you sent the *entire* unit back for retraining in a province that grants those upgrades).

Would be pity.

I've come up with a plan to try it out in a test-campaign. Have a technically unit lose 1 or 2 (in any case, just not many) men each fight and replenish by merged with non-upgraded units. Then if the new guys don't get 'free' individual honour, weapons and armour, those indicators should fade/decrease after repeating this process enough times. (The first times it will at least seem that they got 'free stuff'.

Sound like a lot of work though... :embarassed:
