Just finished an epic game of turtling, on VH/H with Portugal with Retrofit Mod and Grand Unit Addon Mod.

I got Immaculate on 162'th turn. This time instead of allying with everyone, I allied with those who woudln't fight each other. Despite what Factionheir said, whenever I chose one of my 2 allies that were fighting still made me lose reputation. All wars were started by other factions or excom/crusades. With the exception of the first few crusades on the Moors, most of the crusades were on catholic factions :juggle2:
The big problem with this strategy is that, if they DON'T backstab, you can't expand:oops:. I have very few turns left and I still have only a handful of provinces. Getting desperate, I decide to make for both the Holy land and the Americas. Luckily the British backstab me, and once I took Britain the Danish backstabbed me.

Barely finished, with 8 turns left by conquering Americas and hitting the soft spot of the Timurids. I also bought a few provinces for 20k florins from my close allies. Once you hit immaculate with over outstanding relationships, cities become very affordable. They won't sell any provinces once they're down to 3 (damn you pope and your greedy army!), but if a close ally is holding a strategic spot, you might wanna use the rep and buy it out.
As you can see in the minimap, all offensive wars were done with excom/crusades or their stupid blockade initiations, so it calls for a pretty screwed up territory and boundries. To keep my thin lines secure I kept the French and the Germans busy by giving them gold to fight each other and supplying the losing one with more gold, they had a nearly 100 year long fight just for Rheims :laugh4:
Also, since expansion chance isn't on my hands, I have to expand as much as possible once a war is started. Pope will give out so many warnings (even tho they are excommed) and paying the pope is always a necessity.

The good thing about having good relationships with catholic factions is that crusades actually work. This is a screeny of Mongols getting kicked around from Kiev all the way to Hamburg. This is actually the most westward foothold that I've seen the Mongols take.
On an interesting note, Scotland on my campaign produced some excellent princess, all over 6 hearts and sometimes past 8. I kept them alive to provide my throne and heirs with fair wives :laugh4:
I know pizzaguy might shudder at the very thought of my game, but hey it was a good challenge on its own, especially when I had like 30 turns left and I needed 20 more provinces. Trust me, I blizted that part out
