Relentless attacks keep pushing back the British Empire, and it is now in a most dire situation after almost crushing the Macedonian Empire. With the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula done, this new Macedonian offensive was sent through the abundant and thick forests of Germania. The Civilized Macedonians crushed the unwashed barbarians in a string of battles, which left most of Germania in civilized hands. After all, it wouldn't be fair and proper but to expect complete victory, with the momentum that the Macedonian army has.

No Christmas truce, eh?

Christmas? What is Christmas? 25th of December is the day of the resting of the horses which pull the Sun Chariot of Helios, so from there onward for a year they can cross the Earth showing the Sun with renewed vigour! That is, until they are spent the next year and need resting once again in this very same day. We hellenes do not give truce to barbarians in such a, although holy day, relatively unimportant. That happens so since we do not need the light brought by the Sun Chariot to kill barbarians. We can do it in the shade just as well.

What is the usual wage for a Varangian mercenary in the Macedonian Army?

Askthepizzaguy
12-26-2008, 00:31
You are guaranteed citizenship in the New Macedonian Republic, will be granted land, a donkey, a portion of the state grain during famine, and will be paid 1 talent (6000 drachmas) every annum, with a bonus of 500 drachmas upon each victory.

Retirement generally at 35, and typically the land, donkey, and state grain qualifies as a pension.

However, given the rich status of Greece at the moment, we may be able to throw in a third of your gross annual wages per annum.

Beaver
12-26-2008, 01:00
That's not too bad, far better than my current pay. And retirement at 35... Well, as long as Britannia can't come up with anything better, I'll take the job.

Macedonia continues to drive through the Britonic Empire, and now it has just lost contact with the Mediterranean Sea, as Southern Gaul, Narbonensis and Aquitania fall into Civilized hands. The siege on Britanic islands tightens, as Britonics only have Northern and Central Gaul, Belgaeca, Germania-West of the Rhinos river, besides Britania and Hibernia.

Askthepizzaguy
12-26-2008, 04:04
General Alaskander The Pizzaguy nods, wiping blood from his brow, towards his men who have fought so gallantly.

"The lands liberated by Macedon's armies will forever be at peace," Askthepizzaguy said. "You fight not for land, but for peace, justice, and freedom from tyranny. Our ideals of Republican democracy will elevate you all to the status once reserved for nobility; you shall become masters of your domain. You will answer only to the Fates.

We stand on the brink of total victory, and when all is said and done, the Briton nemesis will trouble our lands no more. We will drive them back to where they have come from, and imprison their warlord king. Their people will be subject to the laws and protection of the Macedonian Republic, and they will prosper under our enlightened rule.

As for you, worthiest of soldiers, the women await you at home. Countless feasts. Dances and ale. You will enjoy the festival of Saturnalia, and retire to any sizeable territory of land you wish, and it will be yours to rule and govern and cultivate. You will be represented in the Macedonian government, and we will keep the peace on this continent.

To ensure our Republic does not founder, I have named my top generals to be the regional governors of vast tracts of territory, whose task it is to form an independently elected government for each provincial region. These governments will prepare grain and water for times of famine and drought, they will provide defense and improved roads between the provinces, they will provide training facilities and weapons-makers, sanitation and learning facilities in the greater provinces, and improved farming and markets in the lesser provinces. They will provide town watch and a local magistrate who will execute the law as I have handed down, until such time as the regional governors have drafted democratic law."

Taking a swig of ale, he continues...

"Fight not for me... fight for the right to never again be molested by barbarian invaders. Fight for a better future, and peaceful prosperity for your children, and your children's children. Fight, if none of these things appeal to you, for the plentiful spirits and mountainous food you are about to drink and eat, and for the bountiful women who will welcome conquering heroes! Fight for the respect you deserve, fight like the proud descendants of the Gods you are! Fight for glory! Fight for Alaskander! Fight for Macedon!!!"

Then you say "Fight for Alaskander!!"

Askthepizzaguy
12-26-2008, 04:48
Ah but I first say fight not for me, fight for these ideals, to follow; then I say, if none of that appeals to you, to fight for things, and if that doesn't work, fight for me.

So it's not a contradiction, it's a choice.

Did I bewilder you with my voluminous verbosity?

Askthepizzaguy
12-26-2008, 06:49
Ah, but there could be glory, honour, and women for you in the Macedonian Republic.

We love a good fight, too, and we presently have access to all Mediterranean and Germanic women. Some believe in fighting to the death in the name of honour, but when there is no one left to bury you, and history is written by your conquerors, who will remember your honourable deeds, or care?

Destruction is wasteful. Let us end this war with an honourable compromise. You accept client status as a Macedonian protectorate, and we all win the game.

End of the Story:

After the undeniable close annihilation of Macedonia, with the nation controlling only it's homeland, Illyria and Dacia, while the rest of the known world was controlled by the Britons. As morale was low for the Royal Army, rumors began arriving of the attrocities that the barbarians commited on the Hellenic people, and that fueled a rage that was crucial for the herculean effort of a genuine and not ever seen comeback that has effectively crushed the barbarian hegemony. Indeed, the rise of King Alaskander was the crucial keyevent in the turning of tables in the world. Alaskander quickly rallied his demoralized followers, saying that the Macedonian dream wasn't lost, and that it was still worth fighting for, giving out the example of the massacres happening in Greece, saying that the civilized way is inheretly better in every way than a barbarian culture, and with that, speeches moralized the sunken nation, and many retired men who thought Macedonian destruction was innevitable, rose up to do a difference.
With a speed, discipine, elan and ferocity never seen before, the Macedonian soldiers completely surprised and decimated the complacent Briton army, quickly crushing the barbarians in Thracia, Dalmatia and Greece. The rapid victories achieved the rise in morale that was much needed to revitalize and show the Macedonian people that a difference could be made.
And when the Barbarians were pushed out of Greece, the truth confirmed the rumors. The Greek people had been subjected to terrible atrocities, and the Macedonian conquest was, contrarilly to the first conquest, where they had been seen as terrible oppressors, now seen as liberators, brothers and heroes to the Greek.

http://www.agiasofia.com/people/1204consta.jpg
King Alaskander passes through Athens and sees the destruction and anger of Greek towards the Barbarians

An uproar came with the confirmation of the massacres of Greece, and after the confirmation of the granting of Macedonian citizenship to entire the entire Greek people, most able Greek people accepted King Alaskander proposal to join the Macedonian Army in overthrowing the Barbarians. Thus the Macedonian army doubled, and soon enough the army began its first major offensive, to reunite the Empire of Alexander back to the Empire of Alaskander. The phalanx proved too much, and after multiple attacks the Barbarians had been expelled from the Middle East. Yet, the power of Macedon wasn't still very powerful and most of the world still lied in barbarian hands. Still, the feeling of doing an herculean effort that would save the Hellenic Civilization would lead the army to continually drive out Persia, the Indus, Egypt and the Caucusus altogether, and the frontiers wouldn't change drastically for many months, apparently since the Britons realized the full threat that this recovery could be and quickly summoned their hordes to the borders and effectively managed to counter-attack and nullify any conquest that Macedonia did, managing to get as far as recovering Egypt and Caucasus. Yet difference came when the Persian men, already under Macedon rule, decided to help King Alaskander defeat the Barbarians since the ravages done in Egypt and Caucusus reached Persian ears, and its elite wouldn't want their lands to suffer the same fate. Soon enough, Persian armies had been amassed, and more soldiers flocked to the Macedonian banner.

Persian regiments integrated in the Macedonian army fighting along the Nile and Parade at Alexandria.

These Persians Armies (from Armenia, Babylonia, Pontus, Persia and Iranian Nomadic armies), along with Hellenic (Greeks and Macedonians), and Eastern Barbarians (Dacians, Illyrians, Thracians and Galatians) would be the last drop which would spill the cup. And from henceforth, Barbarian resistance was little, as the Steppe was quickly overrun with the help from the Parthians, leaded and aided by Persian sedentary armies, and in flat North Africa the Hellenic phalanx did its job, crushing the Barbarians easily.

http://joseph_berrigan.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/macedonianphalanx.jpg http://iranpoliticsclub.net/photos/2500/images/Parade%2008%202500%20Celebrations%20Achaemenid%20Infantry_jpg.jpg
A Macedonian phalanx fighting near Leptis Magna, and the entering of the Macedonian lead Persian-Parthian army in Olbia, effectively turning the Pontic Sea into a Macedonian Sea

Some mere months after, as the opressed peoples began taking the Macedonian banner and Europe began turning to the Civilized World, King Alaskander, able advised by his Wise Generals, began seein the necessity of starting to construct a mighty fleet, with which to invade the islands and finally put an end to the barbarian scum.

Macedonian foresightedness takes place. Seeing the inpending invasion of the Brittonic Islands, King Alaskander orders all major ports to begin building ships to use in the invasion.

Italy fell, and quickly afterwards using shallow boats as a means of transport to move the North African army, Iberia lied in Macedonian hands, Germania was a place of great battles which innevitably came to be Macedonian victories. Beleaguered, Gaul fell quickly as all Macedonian land armies stroke at once and smote the Britonic armies, who fell back to their home islands. British were now in the very place they once had their enemies in. Beleaguered and very close to obliteration. Yet they were convinced their sizeable Atlantic fleet, which although having had been neglected since having a continental foothold, was mostly comprised of transport ships, yet the numbers were still very large, and it would be enough to halt any amphibious invasions. They were not aware that the Macedonian Army had already ammassed in the Mediterranean a fleet which far surpassed their fleet size, and was conprised of cut-edge warships with numerous towers, ballistae and catapults. And every day more and more ships arrived at the great military port of Carthage, rendezvous point for the entire Macedonian fleet which would then sail for the Atlantic.
Since the Macedonian leadership didn't know how strong the Britonic fleet was, and since building in the Atlantic was impossible due to British patrols, King Alaskander sent the small Baltic fleet to test the British fleet and observe numbers and technology of their enemy. And indeed the small fleet sailed from the Baltic all the way to Lower Brittania, it had met enemy ships attacking merchant near Belgae, but had them evaded and continued sailing south to the Channel, where they met a great number of military ships and were quickly overwhelmed, turning to the mainland, where they landed on the beach, wrecking their ships in the sand banks. Soon enough, estimates of their numbers and the ship technology was given by the admiral of the small fleet to King Alaskander and his Generals, which put his naval advisors at peace, since the Macedonian fleet could easily erase the British fleet in an handful of battles.

The first ships begin arriving at the military port in Carthage. These were in Lilybeoum and remained there after the conquest of Sicily. And the advance of the Greek army in Gaul

Soon enough, the armies were amassed along the Gallic coast, and the plan was for the gigantic fleet that left Carthage to go off to Aquitania, where it would load several dozens of armies and disembark them in Hibernia, afterwards it eventually turn back, and then the fleet would be divided in two with one harassing transport troops carrying reinforcements to Hibernia, and the other to attack and cripple the Brittish fleet which would undoubtly come to destroy the Macedonian fleet. Afterwards, the Hibernian Macedonian fleet would load the Macedonian armies and unload them in Caledonia, while the main fleet would get the Macedonian Grand Army and continually disembark them in Southern Brittania. And the Northern and Southern Armies would join in the center of the island, hereby unifying the known world in a single Macedonian Empire.

Having arrived in Aquitania, the Briton fleet still hadn't spotted the massive fleet that had made their way there. And so the invading armies which would go to Hibernia started embarking, along with supplies and weaponry. Speed was of the essence, to remain with the element of surprise, still it would take more than two days to embark everything everyone, having been problems in embarking throughout the operation, as some small ships began sinking due to weight excess, all this because of the need of haste..

However, as soon as everything was loaded, the giant fleet departed at once for Hibernia through high sea. The voyage was without problems and soon enough found many merchant ships which were overwhelmed, by being rammed or being boarded in minutes, the army disembarked and quickly overwhelmed garrisons, the fleet, to avoid problems but to gain time, overstretched itself and disembarked along the whole southern Irish coast. Some ships wrecked but the overall result was surprisingly good, and in a week the southern part of Hibernia was already in Macedonian hands.

According to plan, the Macedonian fleet divided. 1/4 of the fleet, the Eastern-most ships, travelled to the Hibernian Sea, cutting off one island from the other and attacking any merchant or transport ships coming and going. Likewise, the other part of the fleet joined up and duly went South to find the Briton fleet, which it did along the Corneu peninsula. There a great battle which resulted, as expected in a sounding Macedonian victory, which many ships of the Briton fleet was either sunk or boarded. The rest of the fleet fled Southwards exactly to where the Macedonian fleet had to go, and since the Macedonian ships were mostly faster, more powerful and more numerous, most of the Briton fleet disapeared in the chase. Few Brythonic ships escaped. The Macedonian fleet arrived near the channel where the large Macedonian army awaited to get to Brittania.

After the defeat of the Briton fleet, and the conquest of Hibernia, Macedonian troops started pouring in the last British island, and there was little to be done by the British but surrender or death. The Britons gave a last resistance, the last breath of a people who had almost conquered the world and were now fighting for their survival. But Macedonian numbers and persistance took their toll, and after a bloody fight, where the casualty rate was 1 Brythonic:5 Macedonians and a slow advance in the Southern front, while on the North the Macedonian task was much easier, and progress was done with much more ease, in the end, the Britons finally fell within the walls of Ratae.

King Alaskander addresses his people:

Mighty soldiers... this victory belongs to you. A commander is only as good as the men who serve under him. You have proven yourselves as the finest soldiers in the entire world, the bravest of all men, the most fierce, the most determined, and the most irrepressible. The known world now knows the power and might of Macedon's army. More importantly, the known world now sees the superior quality of Greek culture. Our science and technology have proven that we are the height of human civilization, and that the Britons were a backwards people bent on the destruction of others. We prove our greater wisdom here, on the shores of their home island, in the streets of their capital, with their defenseless women and children huddled together in fear. We will show the world what true strength really is.

The beaten and decimated Briton people, under the tyrannical rule of any other nation, would be subject to slavery and torture, and would be exterminated in mass demonstrations for the conquering King. But are we such people as to brutalize the defenseless? That is the crime of the Briton King, and it is not one we will lower ourselves to. The fate of the Briton people, under the terms of the offered treaty of alliance, is that they will remain a semi-autonomous region of the greater Macedonian Republic. For now, we will install a governor whose task it is to oversee the disarmament of these people. They will go about their lives, with their same homes, their same farmlands, their same families and tribal structures, under the protection of Macedonian forces.

Over time, we will gradually introduce Greek culture and education, to anyone who wants it, for anyone willing to work for it. They can choose to follow their own ways, or they can choose to follow Macedon. But there will be no more war, no more killing, and certain barbarous practices will be outlawed. They need not fear invasion anymore, for Greece has liberated the lands of all the known world, and though some people still fear and hate one another, the disarmament has taken place there as well. Should anyone wish to abuse the native people of Brython, they will have to get through us first. In return, we are levying a small portion of the local crops to maintain our control of the region, and opening schools and beginning construction on aqueducts, sanitation systems, more efficient irrigation, better roads, and places of commerce, in exchange for the hard work and hard labor of those who volunteer to build for us.

As for you, fellow soldiers; our reconquest of the Briton Horde has left us in possession of all the world's resources, trade routes, ports, mines, roads, and marketplaces. We can afford to pay you your promised wages, and grant you your lands and titles. We also have claimed as the spoils of war the remnants of the Briton empire, confiscated weapons, treasuries, vast quantities of resources, and all the people they have enslaved. Those slaves will be granted their freedom under Macedonian rule, and forced slavery will be outlawed throughout the land. These slaves will have nowhere to go, and are in the most severe poverty of all, but we have a path to freedom for them as well. They will be granted grain and shelter in exchange for contributions to the public works projects which will revitalize the entire Macedonian world, as laborers as they choose, or as workers on state-owned farms.

These works will directly benefit those in Macedonia who are struggling in an uncaring world; the new schools and libraries will be open to the public, the aqueducts will provide better sanitation and new sources of water, and the new crop rotation system will ensure a bounty of grain for all, and our knowledgeable physicians will attempt to heal the sick by appeasing our Gods, as well as trying new methods of treatment.

Go now, my friends, and heal the world from this terrible war, make everything right and fair in the lands you govern, settle down and have families, and teach our children of the incredible victory we have won here today! Wine for everyone, and plentiful meat and bread! Drink and feast! For now begins an era of peace that shall be everlasting! For Macedon!!!

On the way back to Thessalonica, Alaskander the Macedon died suddenly. In the confusion, his generals fought over which interpretation of his will should be followed, and the legitimate heir to his legacy was assassinated.

Some generals believed Alaskander wanted Macedonian culture to be imposed upon the barbarians, and that his mandate of taxation and service by the conquered and the former slaves gave Macedon a right to tax everything to an extraordinary amount, and rule the cultures of the world with an iron fist. Other, more idealistic generals believed that the legacy of Alaskander was one of compassion and mercy, and wanted to govern their territories with a more democratic ideal. Those with the former presumption gained massive armies and declared war on the latter, and there was no single ruler of the whole of Europe.

Chaos, warfare, famine, and genocide became facts of life for generations. The generals of Alaskander fought and killed one another until they themselves were overthrown by rebellious forces. Invasions from the far East and the devastation everywhere led the tribes of Europe to blame the Greeks for their suffering, and much of the Greek homeland lay in ruin after repeated conquests by barbarian hordes.

In an irony, only the isle of Brython remained unscathed from the plagues, and remained isolated in many of the conflicts. There, the mercy of Alaskander resonated with the conquered people there, and he became a hero to the Britons. From his legacy and teachings, the Briton people made modest gains in their infrastructure, leadership, technology and war technique. After repelling invasions and quashing rebellions, Brittania stood as the last bastion of hope, and a beacon in the fog. At least for a while.

But generations later, the face of the world had changed, and it was scarred forever. Too much power concentrated in the hands of one man had the inevitable drawback of causing widespread anarchy in his absence. New tribes and new nations sprang up like the phoenix from the ashes of the dying Macedonian Republic, and upon one another, they declared Total War.

Congragulations to ATPG! Macedon did pretty well in this game, coming in first for the first weeks, beating Britannia when Britannia rose the first time, beating Britannia when Britannia rose the second time, and rising from the ashes when Britannia on the verge of victory.

Of course, if not for Ares that meddling kid who goaded ATPG, we would have won! *sigh* kids these days...:clown:

I would have been happy with any outcome at all.

My friends, you showed a fighting spirit and bravery in the face of defeat I come to expect from my fellow orgahs. That, plus tying the game with Britannia after the comeback, was more than enough to show pride in the underdog and give the game an exciting finish.

The fact that we won was icing on the cake, and it didn't make a liar out of me when I said that Britannia would lose. So that's cool too. But it's obvious I couldn't do this myself, and so I owe the shared victory to my proud teammates, soldiers, and generals.
