I'm wondering if this is a bug or not.

Lost my manual but I doubt there was anything about this. I've set up Inns in various places, had mercenaries available in the quay, chose 1 or 2 and they don't show up--usually.

I'm useing the 1092 Mod which I like alot
(the French are much more formidable)but don't think that's the cause.

Anyone else run into this?

By the way, when I run searches it seems that any post over a few weeks old gets "Telefragged". Probably could have found something about this in an old post but can't access them.

Quasar in TedKenndy!! or whatever they say.

You don't queue mercs like normal units, you choose those you want and put them in the 'queue' then press the hand with gold in it icon and they immediately come. I assume that is your prb. otherwise i dunno. Mercs are more likely to gather around smaller fortifications so if you like them, keep an inn in a fort only region.

Yes, I had the same problem, didn't realize you hire them and have them available immediately by clicking on the hand with the coin. My experience with mercs has not been good. I only use them when desperate, the upkeep is so high and the utility low, depending on the unit type.

I find Italian Infantry mercs to be a bargin, and seige engines represent good value too in my opinion, being as it saves you thousands on developing your own tech.

You know, I posted this question about 15 minutes ago, came back to check spelling and there are 2 replies! Good riddance to the manual.

Yes,the golden hand is the problem and I'm almost sure that that detail was NOT in the manual. Could be wrong.

Thanks guys!

Who said mercs don't pay off? No sir, in the early stages merc is the way to go. The only way the Byzantines can take out them bloody Turks is by hiring a horde of mercs, while Constantinople builds up and churns out boats to get the trade rolling in.

Not to mention you get advanced troops from day 1 of the game...

Mercs useless? Tsk, tsk, tsk...

who said that. they can be a serious problem if you overuse them, being forces to replace them slowley while they cost you loads but for a supplement to your troops and as a temporary force when you have spare money they're great. I agree with using merc. siege engines, can be very useful if you want to save the truble of building them yourself. My fave merc would have to be the heavy islamic infantry (i forget their name) you can get from the off in early period, i use them for loads of heavy fighting before i can build my own heavy cav and advanced spear units become avaliable. Other than that italian infantry and saracen infantry can be a godsend in a crisis.

As with all good things, if used in moderation they're great.

mercs are actually too powerful in early games, they give the player an unfair advantage (the AI doesn't seem to use them + some of them are advanced unit unavailable otherwise). As Rosa says, they are instrumental for Bizantium but also Spain for the push to Morroco.

Best way is to buy a lot of them, send them with one of your general in a province where you expect a huge fight, win with maximum losses (of yours), disband them straight after, while sending your own troop to defend.

Almogavar are merc only units, and pretty formidable (inn in Aragon), otherwise I like italian inf too (but expensive upkeep), and catapults (it saves the 2 years production time, plus their upkeep is very reasonnable).

I think the build cost for mercs should be higher but the upkeep maybe only 50% above normal as they add variety to the game its boring playing for hundreds of turns with the same units!!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
