I'm well aware, I'm just trying to weasel my way out of having to write another chariot race. People need to be aware that if another race is run and if the avatars themselves personally compete, that there is a chance of death. Collisions have decent odds of occurring and a bad collision effect roll can result in the death of the charioteer. I will not change this system just because actual avatars are racing. The odds of death are low, but they still exist. If avatars insist on racing, then that will be a chance they will have to take.

I imagined Mak and Caesar racing in the Hippodrome. What a nice dream though. :clown:

Now we are talking TC. Let the boy's have a little more riding on the outcome. Nothing like a little potential death at the Hippodrome to sort out the men from the boys.

Personally I don't think OK should go anywhere near another race. I favour dragging the two by the ear into the Magnaura, hear them air their differences and then passing judgement with a particularly bad attitude about it.

But hey, I'm just cranky after getting nailed in a Steering group meeting by a bunch of lawyers...so I could be subconsciously looking for an argument.

Frankly, though the idea appeals to me, I don't think I'd risk Methodios in a Russian roulette...

Nursing an avatar takes work and dedication. Losing your avatar in battle in game is in the order of things (it's to be expected) but losing him on a roll of a dice sucks... IMHO

As always entertaining reading gentlemen.

I have been waiting for the save all evening, however a player has had the save for nearly FOUR hours now and therefore it is getting time for my bed.

I am slightly frustrated for I believe the next time I will be at the computer the turn will surely have passed. I may get up early tomorrow morning.

I give the benefit of the doubt to Knights of Palma who probably has just forgotten to post it or something. I have been racking my brains but I can think of little system better than the one we have in place.

He gained his third vassal here. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1994408&postcount=22)

That would start his Antypatos timer. From the various links in the History thread, it seems this started on 1125. (You look at the timestamp of the post and compare it to timestamps of other posts, such as Megas reports, to figure out the year.)

He gained his fourth one here. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1999357&postcount=24)

In 1132, Pavlos would have met his TIR for Patrikios. He had 4 vassals so he would have been promoted immediately.

Pavlos got his 5th vassal in 1135.

He'll meet his TIR for Duke in 1140. The Caesar might leave the House before then if the Emperor dies but Pavlos can just give land to Motep's avatar.

Yeah, the times we have lost avatars has been when there has only been one RBG on the field. You get two or more and there is little you can not accomplish.

ULC
09-10-2008, 21:41
Which brings in how I feel about the raw power of the bodyguard. No offense, but it kinda eats away at the game for me when I can take 4 cavalry and defeat an army 6 times that size easily. I like that there are no limits on RBG's in a stack. Because it requires inter-player cooperation. The AI was always going to be absurdly easy and we knew it.

Also, banding together RBG's helps to minimize the effects of a neglectful Megas. But an army is still needed. And that is for taking and holding large cities.

ULC
09-10-2008, 21:50
I'm not talking purely against the AI though, more or less about PvP. The imbalance in my opinion will show up so greatly that it will come down to who was unlucky enough to lose a single man from their RBG unit to random missile fire.

Privateerkev
09-10-2008, 21:54
Well there will probably be a massive amount of RBG's on both sides in a PvP.

RBGs are powerful, but using them is still a major risk because it's your avatar on the line. We've already had 3 deaths in battle in the first 35 game turns. It took over 70 game turns just to get one battle death in KotR and over 100 game turns to get 3 battle deaths. I think it's doing pretty well, all considered. Plus, we concluded at the end of KotR that the real competition was player versus player, not player versus AI. That's why the current rule system allows so much freedom for political maneuvering and civil war. As far as I'm concerned, the AI exists mainly to give the players the resources to fight each other.

PK, what if it's only between 2 avatars? Really, the whole thing comes down to avatars in PvP, not what your troops are or etc. Maybe I'm just missing something or I have been playing LTC to long...

I don't see how it could possibly impact PvP in any way. If the RBGs are of the same base strength on both sides, how can it favor one side more than the other?

ULC
09-10-2008, 22:05
Thats the point of it I suppose.

Say we have 2 avatars on each side, both in equal power. If one gets caught in missile fire and loses 1 or 2 men, then that sides chances of wining just shot down considerably. Or, if they both manage to be unscathed and get into combat, it comes down to luck, not skill.

I guess all I am advocating here is skill, not "whack-a-general", to win fights.

Privateerkev
09-10-2008, 22:09
IMHO there is not too much skill in PvP.

You both bring a lot of troops. You grind them together. Whoever had more troops will probably win.

Unless you've rigged the battle beforehand or are absurdly lucky, PvP is going to be very dangerous.

I don't see it the same way at all. If one person gets caught in missile fire and the other doesn't, isn't that due to tactical skill or lack thereof on one side or the other? Also, how exactly do you think it should be resolved if two identical units end up in one-on-one combat? Surely the skill is in avoiding a one-on-one situation in the first place, not just crossing your fingers and hoping you get the winning swipe. I don't quite understand where the lack of skill is in a PvP situation.

My comment was about dry humor and the internet. I've often been shocked to see how my posts were taken totally differently than how I meant them. Which is why smileys are spammed all over my posts these days. I've been told by multiple people I trust on here that I used to come across as "angry." Yet I don't really feel angry when I post. So, I concluded that there is a problem with how I write. One way I'm trying to fix it is to make it blatantly obvious that I am joking and in a good mood.

Hey guys, I got a problem. I recently had to temporarily uninstall MII, but now I can't reinstall it for some reason. I would post this at the .Org's tech support forum, but I'm not sure if it's a problem with the game or my computer.

The problem comes when when I have to switch disks during the installation. With one exception, my DVD-Drive doesn't eject, and when I am able to change disks my computer still think I have the Disc 1 in the drive. And right now I can't even run the launcher, when I try ti run any of the apps on Disc 1 a get a message telling me they're not valid Win32 applications. I'm not sure, but I think I can only run the launcher after rebooting my computer.

I've no idea how to even approach this, so I thought I'd post it here. Until I figure out what's what, I can't access the save.

In history, a privateer is a pirate who is sanctioned by a government to raid other people's ships. The line is blurry as to when someone is one or the other. Usually, people were both. Because both acted pretty much the same and it was more to do with how other governments recognized you at a point in time.

On the contrary, Ioannis is extremely chivalrous, only he doesn't like traitors.

See above. Ioannis is just as chivalrous as everyone else. Though the way he expresses it certainly could be seen by some as... controversial.

Chivalry is subjective. The game takes certain actions of your avatar and assigns "chivalry" stats. But there is a whole lot of gray area to play with. Dread/Chivalry being reduced to a simple black/white dichotomy is far too simple and nothing like the "real" world.

I still need to write a story which is several game years overdue and I need to write a report for that battle. Then I'll take a (hopefully short) break from LOTR.

Gah, I knew that battle was pointlessly risky from the very beginning. The best thing to do would have been to attempt a night attack which would prevent the garrison from joining the battle. I could easily beat the field army in a 1 on 1 fight. Then I would have besieged Medina and taken it after the Magnaura session without a problem.

Unfortunately, I've always imagined Solomon to be very hotheaded and just a bit greedy so I decided to try and grab the province this turn by killing both armies.

I know this is a moot point since soon the new Army rules will be in effect, but what is the point of me making a SoT like this.

Sinop:

Garrison: No garrison may be removed, disbanded or added to a Private Army without my explicit permission.

When it gets completely ignored for the second time now?

Edit: Better add some clarification. I am not mad about this and I know that problems like these are the very reason we got rid of these complicated rules. I think considering the vast amount of data and regulations to sift through PK has done a wonderful job at being Megas and I don't want this to become a big deal. I just felt irritated when reading the current Megas thread. That's all, no hard feelings involved.

You told me you wanted Lisas to get a private army around Trebizond. I did so. I even recruited units to make up for what I took out of Sinop.

The idea that I am supposed to create and gather a private army in one turn, plus somehow not take anything out of anyone's settlements, just doesn't make sense.

If the new army CA does not pass, I will feel very sorry for the next person who even thinks of being the Megas. If I knew I would have to deal with the OOC flack that I have dealt with this term, I would have never considered running. I have broken exactly one rule the whole term and that had to do with helping an avatar. IC flack I don't mind. For the benefit of anyone who thinks this game is too easy, I will now point out that we have just had our fourth death in battle on turn 39. KotR did not have it's first death in battle until turn 73 and didn't have its fourth until turn 87, but two of those deaths were avatars that were not controlled by the person fighting the battle and one of them was essentially intentional. It is also worth mentioning that there were only five deaths in battle total in WotS, and one of those was an avatar that no one ever used.

LotR is already miles ahead of the other games in lethality, especially when you consider that all four deaths so far have been in situations where the player who owned the avatar was fighting the battle.

Okay, just to clarify some things during my time as sub GM:

- There won't be any Library updates, as I don't have mod powers and thus can't edit the necessary posts.

- Not sure how much TC is going to do before he leaves, but if need be I will calculate all influence manually and post it in this thread. I expect you all to double-check for your avatar.

- I will stay on top of things, but if you need a retinue transfer or something similar, PM me just in case. If you don't hear back from me within 24 hours, PM me again.

Also, for the History will the Tagamata and Asteri be sharing a House thread now as the Alliance? In the Hx I've linked to the Asteri thread for 1140 since they are the dominant part of the Alliance.

I very much encourage people to individually contact others at the Org (or other forums) that they think might enjoy the game. We can easily support 40+ players now, and the more we get the better it will be. A group recruiting effort will likely be more successful than me just putting up ads.

It's great fun. The last few terms have been basically a "crash test dummy" session, and a few dummies have been crashed harshly. I'm certainly glad it's been the Vets that have experienced the situation as they've handled it very well.

The new system will really make it simple, effective and allow you all to concentrate on IC deliberations and negotiations rather than minute rule knowledge.

You'll need to be organised, clearly, but beyond that it's really now about your interpersonal skills and relationship building.

I'm amused that I am now considered a "vet" but thank you. Of the 4 Megas players, I very much felt like the "newbie Megas." Of the other 3, 2 are WotS veterans and the 3rd was in all of KotR.

And to everyone, my rant about the job of Megas in the Magnaura was very much IC. I agree with AG that the rules have been very much simplified. By far the hardest part of my term was keeping track of private army units. And that part of the job has been completely stripped away. All you'll have to do is keep track of who has how many PU's left. Which is much easier. You can totally forget about a unit once you recruit it.

Me not running for re-election this time has much more to do with the fact that I want to spend my free-time doing other things. With these new rules, I'll definitely consider running again later in the game after I've had my batteries recharged.

5. Lost as a fun practice for the people who would bring the whole thing down later.

2. Won, but ran unopposed and my election formally concluded the game.
3. Automatically assumed.
4. Lost.
5. Lost and got exiled to Ragusa for my troublemaking.

So I actually haven't beaten anyone. :laugh4:

Iggy's:

1. Ran unopposed (Sigismund).
2. Lost (Ulrich Hummel #1).
3. Lost (Ulrich Hummel #2).
4. Won (Ulrich Hummel #3), but was about to be impeached something like 2 turns in before he suicided.
5. Lost (Wolfgang Hummel).
6. Won (Ioannis), but afterwards a CA was made specifically preventing him from automatically assuming Megas-ship after Alexios died.
7. Pending.

I've been a bit successful, but that's because I've been very careful about picking the right moment to run:

2) Won against an unpopular (at that moment) opponent.
3) Lost intentionally.

It might have been cause by bodyguard upkeep, which is not included in wages. As bodyguard numbers change due to losses in battle and subsequent regeneration, the upkeep changes. The wages are an 'extra' cost for generals and family members that is lumped on top of the bodyguard upkeep.

I stand corrected, actually. I just remembered that LotRmod reduces all bodyguard upkeep to 1 as well, so that's not the issue. Well, it's not the issue if you take into account the 1 florin upkeep, which would make every avatar cost a total of 101 per turn instead of a flat 100.
