Hey there, me again. I'm currently working on a manual for EB (Unofficial, and yes I know there's another one, but this will be a more portable downloadable pdf), and I'm doing the formations for all factions, and I'm now upto Makedonia (So far I've only done Romani (5 formations in Total), and they aren't QUITE complete), and I've found a source for a Makedonian army layout, but I'm troubled by a few things.
First, here's what I'm working from:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/Macedonian_battle_formation.gif
The problem I'm having is this: What are 'Syntagma' towards the left of the Phalanx, and 'Taxis', which are on the right? I have most of the others sorted.
Secondarily, I'm Guessing Toxotoi Kretikoi would be often used, but where would hese be put? In the Allied Light Infantry? Similarily the Thrakioi Peltasai. I'm guessing the latter would go on the flanks.
Any help greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I am aware that the Hypaspits are actually Heavy infantry.

A Taxis is a "Batallion" and a Syntagma is a "Platoon" if you will, a Syntagma is a part of a Taxis (I think). The Toxotoi Kretikoi I imagine would be with the Psiloi.

Ok, cheers. New problem has arisen: I need really 1 more unit, orelse I need to dispence with my Companion Cavalry. This is my current (rough) layout:
1 General
2 Hippakontistai
1 Akontistai
1 Toxaoi Kretikoi
1 Sphendonetai
1 Hypapists
6 Phalanxes
1 Thrakioi Peltastae
1 Peltastae
2 Agrianikoi Pelikephoroi
1 Hippeis Thesalikoi
1 Hetairoi
And I think that's it. Problem is, is that's 21 units. Errr... help?
EDIT:That's actually 19. My bad, counted the Agrians twice. To fill that extra slot I'm probably going to use a Pheraspidai or another General. Thoughts?

You could ditch one Hetairoi, and replace one Hippakontistai with Hetairoi Aspidophoroi? (Gives comparatively large numbers of Aspidophoroi, though).
By no means do I really know anything about the Maks. It just seem practical if you want to balance your army; or else you could ditch on Pelekuphoroi unit.

Thanks Tellos, I'll be replacing both my Hippokontistai with Hetairoi Aspidophoroi (I was working from the old unit cards, so didn't know about HAs) Not sure what to get to ill that extra slot. Either another FM or a Pheraspidai, whic will be going behind my Hypapistai or my Hetairoi respectively.
Where though, should I put my General? With the Hets, or behind The Allied Light Infantry (In this case, Agrians)

With the Hetairoi, the Makedonian kings were expected to lead the charge. The Somatophylakes are nothing but Hetairoi.
In the Antigonid era, Hypaspistai weren't used the same as they were with Alexander or the Seleukids. Rather than Hypaspistai, use Peltastai Makedonikoi.

were they a reserve or something like the praetorians?
I'm utterly lost when talking about succesor armies , I'm just starting to understand

Cheers. msot of that I already knew, but thanks none the less. Linking in to this, I was thinking of using some of those foot companions and sticking them either on the right wing, or behind the hypaspists. Thoughts?
Che Roriniho, I was working on a manual for a while, if you would like to use any of my material or ideas they are yours. Unfortunately, I had way too much stuff going on in RL to work consistently on it and I sort of got burnt out and moved on to other things. It is also outdated, particularly the installation section as it was written for 1.0. I have a wiki here:
http://ebmanual.wikispaces.com/
If you need help doing any writing (or editing; I have been told that I possess half-way decent grammar and spelling), I'm more than happy to help. But, I understand if you want to endeavor it alone; I've learned all to often that too many cooks spoil the stew. Sometimes, it's easier to do it yourself. Feel free to PM me though if you need anything.

Thanks very much. I'll get it to something approaching a readable state, then start a thread on it. Currently it's very much in Alpha, but if all goes to plan, expect more in a week or so. I will PM you. Just, when I have something for you to work on (currently it's just a 4 page list of formations) and Army Composition, but eventually it'll be an all-singing, all-dancing EB-fest with a section covering jusst about everything. Then we'll have to do it all over again for EBII :wall:
