Hey all,
Well, I've been enjoying all the good that 1.1 has to offer. My Romani compaign is coming along nicely. However, I encountered a weird little thing while fighting near Kart-Hadast. Apparantly, the Carthies managed to recruit some... unusual allies. Check out the Carthy general's unit I was fighting:

This is... Sparta?

I don't know for sure, but i would guess that it is Xanthippos, a spartan mercenary, who reformed the carthaginian military in the time of the first punic war.
Edit: As far as i know, this wikipedia article seems accurate:

See Polybius 1.32 (http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/////ptext?lookup=Plb.+1.32) - 1.35. Xanthippus is probably most famous for his victory over Marcus Atilius Regulus at the Battle of Tunis.
ok thats weird i have the SAME EXACT army even wit the same character portits the weird
Was your latest envoy to Kart-hadast kicked into a hole?

No, that's normal. Xanthippos is a general Carthage starts with.

I think mp0925 is talking about the romans - i see no carthaginian character portraits on the screenshot...
I think he spawns...
He is spawned by the script at a certain date, if Karthadast is at war with the romans.

Of course. After I invaded North-Africa, naturally. ;)

No offense, but the Wikipedia story sounds like a fairy tale. "Gave them a 'leaky' ship and he sank coming Home?".
Xanthippos' biografy in EB says he returned safely and lived happy for ever in sparte :book2:
perhaps a correction of wikipedia is in order

I think there are different accounts on how he found his death, so wikipedia could be right in this matter, saying that Diodorus wrote this episode.
Appian writes he has been thrown overboard, which is not that different.
Edit: The article could of course be expanded regarding this issue.

I've never played extensively as Kart-Hadast, so naturally I couldn't have seen him. And yes, he must spawn as the last time I played as them (version 1.0) he wasn't part of the family tree. Never was, as long as I can remember. The only time I've ever seen that guy is when playing as Makedon, turned off the fog of war and saw that, after the Romani had captured Corsica, the Carthies landed a small army there through naval invasion. That army was led by none other than Xanthippos himself, though after that, even though I searched exntensively for him, he was gone. Just vanished, maybe a roman gladius took the better of him... Poor guy...

He appears via script, in what is a masterful display of history in gaming. You can choose to accept his services or send him packing. Of course, most sensible people don't turn down a free general. . .

on that note does the whole 'man of the hour' thing still happen in EB, where you can get a captain promoted into your family? it used to happen to me a lot around the time of the marian reforms/civil war

It still can happen (probably is hardcoded and couldn't even be turned off, if you wanted to), but it depends on the ratio of your family members compared to provinces, just as with adoptions. So, if you have a lot of family members you may well play a whole campaign without a single man of the hour.

Expand fast and you'll have lots of Men of the Hour.
