It is very rare, but can happen. In my current Makedonian campaign, I recently had Carthage launch two separate amphibious invasions against Lilibeo, which I took from them 7-8 years and 2 peace treaties ago. Still, that was the first time it has happened in any one of my numerous campaigns and I was pretty shocked.

If you take an island/land oversea that the AI started with, thats about the only thing that will make them launch a sea invasion.

Yes. I remember playing rtr, which doesn't have a landbridge from italy to sicily. The romans would rather march all around the mediterranean to attack africa, than use a ship for an invasion of sicily.

In my rtw vanilla campaign (campaign difficulty setting very hard), the roman factions do amphibious invasions of Kydonia and Athens like every 3 turns.

Vanilla-Romans are the other exception. It probably has to do with certain tasks for them (i guess the ai had something like the senate missions, too, making it expand). However, i've never seen any other faction making offensive naval operations in vanilla.

Greek cities? Carthage? I sure have... That used to be a terrible exploit: crippling their economy by attacking their troop-transports very agressively. <_<

Maybe my memory is tricking me, so i'll rephrase.
The AI with rtw.exe will not execute naval invasions as long it isn't a former owner of oversea territory or it is forced by other means
which might possibly be in connection with some sort of dark and obscure vanilla campaign magic.
In any mod using the rtw.exe the AI is confined to using the first mentioned alternative.
omg is getting to to point where i need regular patorls of of my navy this is insane their like launching good invasions (5-6 hoplites general greek phal. heavy skirmishers....) non stop from asia minor
