I sometimes can't figure this out. I know that I am a relative newbie. But I am minding my business as the English.
Germany, my ALLY, invades. I defend my provinces. Offer treaties to him.
Get the Papal warning. Make no hostile gestures. (except maybe one assination attempt). successfully defend my province. Offer peace, and BOOM - I am EXCOMMUNICATED.
Wierd.
so screw it. Going to wipe Germany off the map.
what did i do wrong?
thanks in advance,

Nothing!.
It's just that the Pope is arbitrary, corrupt, biased, vindictive and hates you. - A pretty accurate historical representation actually....
This has been raised a few times in these forums, and people's responses tend to match yours - If you have been excommunicated then you have nothing left to loose, so chaaarge!

Did you first lose a province and then retake it?

did you have a territory where the germans were in the castle and you were laying siege? sieges still count as hostilities.

Hi,
The pope sometimes chooses to back the most powerful faction. rather than, in this case, the one who was attacked.
Perhaps he was also allied to the Germans and not you.

Popes excommunicated me for attacking a ship before.... how exactly will I be able to "withdraw my troops within 2 years" when I didnt use any troops? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
i find very little connection between my actions and the popes'. he will find some reason to excommunicate me during the game. Who cares, it's just more fun then to take him out and shove his silly hat where the sun don't shine.

I was playing the other day. I had a ship of mine attacked in neutral waters, I did not even fight back. I mean they just attacked my ship sitting there. No troops moved into my province or mine into others. Nothing. I got a warning for it.

without bothering to read this thread, (sorry, but this issue is old), I'll offer a bit of experience with it. My apologies if this was already mentioned.
As the poles, I found I could invade, and without my enemies making any counter move against me, (not counterattacks to retake stuff, no this no that, no nothing), they got excom'd.
So, in conclusion, the pope is screwy, (perhaps he sides with the most catholic, but if this is so it clearly doesn't depend on your King's piousness) Nor anything else that I can see.
