is it accurate that they use monterfino helmets?
I thought they used this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Roman_legionaire_in_lorica_segmentata.jpg

and also shouldn't the Cohors Praetoriana use those pratorian(?) helmets?

Legionaries in the Republican period wore Mail and the Montefortino Helmet. Segmentata is a later invention outside the timespan of EB.

Quoted from the Wiki article with that picture : "Lorica segmenta, or the iron band armor, was only commonly worn between the 2nd and 3rd century AD."

(hint : EB = 272BC - 14AD)

Cohors reformata was after the Marian reforms, as you probably know. at this point in time, the most effecient helmet in terms of cost to manufacture and protection given. later on, the other hemets, like that one in the picture.

That legionary is an imperial legionary, and is wearing the Corbridge 'A' armour, which would put him at around 42 AD, which is much later than EB. The Helmet is The Imperial Italic type, but I'm not sure exactly which one. Even so, that helmet only came to use in the 1st Century AD.

That'seeffectively a crap legionary. Early imperial armour, but much later helmet. He is teh weard.

In this picture they also wear monterfino helmet and I doN't think the armor is a lorica segmentata. But I haven't used these soldiers in game yet and I'm not a historian. I'd like to be enlightened about this though...

I think that IS the montefortino helmet. not sure. That armour is Chain mail, or Loica Hamata if you want to sound clever.
In the time period of the marian reforms in EB, there were about 15 different helmets, so I guess the team just chose the most popular.
Glad to enlighten :D

It says in the unit description that "Most legionnaires are now equipped with Coolus bronze helmets."

I am not someone in disguise,I'm totally newbie ;) but a very experienced total war player. I asked this question seriously:embarassed:...and I'm still not relieved because the helmets on imperial roman legionary do not look like coolus(?) either. I haven't seen them closely though. I mean weren't the legionary in vanilla accurate? If there was variety though I think they were cooler. But realism is very important for me soooo...it won't matter.:2thumbsup:

anyone got any ideas as to how CA got so off when it comes to historical accuracy?

Ludens
08-16-2008, 17:18
Well, for one thing they didn't have EB's researchers. For another, the people who have a decent knowledge about ancient history, much less care about it, are only a small part of the gaming community. If CA had taken EB's stance on lorica segmentata, their forums would have been turned into a warzone by Rome fanboys. The people who care about historical accuracy generally don't expect to see it in computer games. The few games that are accurate tend to be niche products. Amongst mainstream games, R:TW is one of the more accurate ones. Few games include chainmail-wearing legionary cohorts.

And even less include Polybian legions.

or the British headhunter units who supposedly threw enemy heads that did more damage than artillery units. :dizzy2:

or how the Egyptian faction was 1000 years off in historical accuracy

Or how the barbarian factions were so generic.

I don't even remember Vanilla RTW...

I started playing EB back when it was first released to the public (0.7ish?) and I've never played vanilla since.

Agreed, although for a different reason - I haven't payed vanilla RTW in years because I played many other games in-between before discovering EB.
