View Full Version : How do I break the Roman-campaign addiction?

Ever since EB version .7 or something, I've been playing only the Romani
campaigns for nearly every version. I'm sorry :(
I don't know why but I just get addicted to Roman historical expansion. What other factions can you recommend me to play? I want it to be difficult - I was thinking of playing Macedonia, but I don't like to use sarissa phalanx units because the AI just sends their troops on frontal suicide missions against phalanx units.
And I'm not sure about other steppe/barbarian factions because they might be incomplete. What do you recommend?
P.S. Can someone direct me to a EB-BI installation guide for EB 1.1?
I used to play only romani but then I got a lil bored and by the same time the new historical battles were released so... I started an AS campaign and it was goOd...:hippie:
but then I had the curiosity to play as pahlava , and men those rock!
I beated 1300 seleukid troops with 100 horse archers xD :laugh4:
Small thing I'm planning to do once I get done with my current pontos campaign to help me get into other factions.
First.
1.Aedui
2.Casse
3.Koinon
4.Lusotannon
5.Saba
6.Averni
7.Sweboz
8.Getai
9.Seluecia
10.Makedonia
11.Carthage
12.Romani
13.Bactria
14.Parthia
15.Hayasdan
16.Saka
17.Ptolmies
18.Pontos
19.Sarmatia
20.Epeiros
Next go Here (Randomly picks a number between 1 and 20.) (http://www.random.org/integers/?num=1&min=1&max=20&col=5&base=10&format=html&rnd=new)
Whichever faction gets selected you HAVE to play for at least 50 Turns (12 and a half years)
Of course theres exceptions for factions you've played recently. But its a good way to introduce yourself to new factions I'd think.
I tried the random number and I got 12 (Romani)

btw, I have an unrelated question. How do I gear my EB 1.1 for BI?
I installed the "EB trivial script" so it no longer has the data path to RTW.exe
it just leads to "eb trivial script.exe"
what if you try ferromancer's intaller?

yeh, I already went there. The link is broken.
Isn't there a simpler way to get it working (copy edu files, etc) instead of downloading another 700 mb file and reinstalling?

Create a shortcut to your BI exe and add the mod switch to it ("-mod:EB"). Then copy paste the "imperial_campaign" folder from "\EB\Data\world\maps\campaign" and rename the copy to "barbarian_invasion".
They're may be more but that's all I remember for right now, I suggest you try Ferromancers mod again though, just checked the link is working fine now.

I say... Carthage... Nice change of pace, but still a more developed experience than possibly the barbarian ones (i haven't done any barbarian ones)
epeiros is also nice.
I'd say Ptolemaioi/AS, for the change of pace, but they are both successor armies, so...
PS: LZ3, do you have pics of that battle? sounds cool
If you want your TriviaScript working with BI, there's a simple way of doing that too.
Go to your "Rome - Total War" folder and open the "ebconfig.xml" with a text editor (rightclick on it -> "Edit")
Then search (Strg+F) for "Rome"
Promptly it should find some line like
<ID>RtwStart</ID>
<Type>String</Type>
<Values>
<Text>RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -show_err</Text>
Perhaps the -show_err isn't there, that one I added for myself some time ago I think
Now just change RomeTW.exe to RomeTW-BI.exe so it looks like that:
<ID>RtwStart</ID>
<Type>String</Type>
<Values>
<Text>RomeTW-BI.exe -mod:eb -show_err</Text>
Now close the file and save changes (obviously).
Now the TriviaScript works 100% with your Barbarian Invasion:2thumbsup: All the shortcuts produced by your EB installation should work like a charm now (at least they do for me :) )
No need to copy anything else around.
Of course only if you have setup the rest according to the numerous tutorials (I speak of duplicating&renaming "EB\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign" folder)

In this case you should try KH. I somehow find them very much related to Rome unitwise.
And I'm not sure about other steppe/barbarian factions because they might be incomplete. What do you recommend?
:inquisitive:
Incomplete?!? Absolutly not. Just try out the Sweboz, they are my second "most fun faction" after the Romans.

Saka Rauka. Crazy Fun. Imagine killing an entire full stack army wth 300 HAs and you have an idea of what to expect. Oh, and the Cataphract HA's are the most ridiculously fun and dangerous unit ever inventewd ever.
EDIT: Never tried them, but maybe have a go at Hayasdan? Just looking through their unit roster, and it all looks rather good.
Hayasdan. They are hard to start with and, just like the romans, they get fun reforms. They are also possible to play in very different ways. Native phalanxes, horse archers, heavy cavalry and good foot archers. Even "imitation legionaires" if that's what you like.

Since I am addicted to them I chose Pahlava in EB eternal enemy of rome and I realized that how Parthians crushed Romans.
so I have many a experience to start with romani again?
:laugh4:
and 12 is my lucky number ..... :egypt:

I was addicted to Romani and Makedonia too, but I broke out and tried the Arverni. Their situation is sufficiently different and yet the playing style is similar to the Romani (in terms of melee infantry with missile power) that it softens the culture shock (pun not intended).

Oh yeh, I've been there. XD
In my Romani campaign, I was able to hire about 2 full stacks of merc horse archers (40 units) over the course of 10-15 years. I used my HA army and completely annihilated 5-6 full (15,000-20,000 troops) stacks of Getai and Seleucid armies while suffering less than 500 casualities overall.
Then I got bored on how overpowered the HorseArcher is with proper micromanagement and crappy AI, so I sent them to Sicily as a 40 unit strong garrison army against Cartage. :D

Well, if all else fails, one option remains. Try to be noble, and fall on your sword.

So you're saying I should lead an army of undead warriors in the afterlife?
Maybe I'll take a page from the terra cotta army (a bonus in that they're immune to arrows and fire) :p

You should try them against their own kind and see if you're still laughing after. :D
I did what you did as the Romans and loved it. Then I thought I could try my silver chevroned HAs against Sauromatae and regretted it. :\ Lost a full quarter against a mixed army involving Cat HAs half my size.

You should give the Lusotannon a try then. Similar but different.
meh if you got tired of something you should try something totally diferent
I suggest horse archers faction (suggest pahlava :P) , a successor faction (I really like AS , you might like Makedonia for instance) or one of the barbarian factions (most people go for aedui , I've also found interesting (at least worth the try ) the sweboz and the casse )

Baktria is fun, i recently finished one...might get back to it later and start a huge push west...blue death muwahahahahahahahaha

Hayasdan is excellent, provided you survive the first 20 years.
It is the most Western HA faction, what means that you also have decent infantry to use. The reforms make the game very much like a Roman campaign: you need a first reform to get your better troops at all and before a (set of) second reform(s) you can only recruite factional troops in a few provinces around Armenia. When going on conquest during this time you have to use regionals in huge numbers (what means masses of Pantodapoi Phalangitai and the like).
