I have just had a look at the Mongol Invasion page at the EA.COM Store site & it has this curious item in the game description -

"NEW BUILDINGS AND REGION UPGRADES - Improve the effectiveness of your troops with the new Drill Dojo and improve the condition of your lands with the addition of Roads."

Has anyone heard about these ROADS upgrades before?

*gape*

Yep, says so right here (http://www.ea.com/app/store/en/prod_detail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1274163938.0989589307@@@@&BV_EngineID=dalkkjlijlkbedbfegcghkcki.0&pid=14309&oid=50820). Thank you, Fatboy-san, that would have been hard to spot.

This makes for interesting speculation. What do we need roads for if every unit can move 1 province per season anyway? It's possible that this is somehow connected to the option to command units to "make their own way" to a certain province instead of micro-managing them on every turn. Perhaps the revamp planned for the strategy map is even bigger than we've imagined so far!

(Interesting side detail: the Strategy Dojo is mentioned in the Warlord Edition page, but not in the Mongol Invasion expansion page. I will sue http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

PURE SPECULATION:
What if Roads affected troop movement? Since they do indicate that they will allow you to send a unit across the countryside, maybe cavalry can travel two roaded-provinces per turn, and foot soldiers can go three-for-two or something. A koku bonus may or may not work, but it seems that travel speed should be affected. Maybe a road on the battlefield will allow units traveling on it to move faster, or tire less quickly? That would make them more useful in the battle engine, too, rather than just a graphic texture.

Role on Rome:Total war. They'd better damn well put roads in that! Oops, more speculation there, we don't know that's where we're headed.

the roads are simply a vectoring tool to move banners automatically from one province to a user-set destination.

Historical Note:
Japan is a mountainous country and army movement was strictly via the few roads. The number of roads increased and improved as time went on so Sengoku armies would be better served than samurai of the Mongol Invasion era.

In the original STW armies could move at will from province to province even though in reality sometimes this would not be possible due to the lack of a road through a mountain pass. This is why the strategic game is so abstract and 'Risk/Samurai Swords'-like.

I bet this will not be corrected...

Guess what! The EA.COM store description has been changed & now it no longer mentions
roads! Was it all just a dream?

Which pill did you take the red or the blue Fatboy?

As Roman mentioned, historically Japan at the time of the Mongol Invasion had very few roads. The most famous being the Tokaido road between Kyoto(Emperial city) and Kamakura (Political base).

Roads would help trade and communications as well as military speed.

Oh and Hi to all people here, a newbee I am not, just a lost STW soul come back to rejoin the fun.
