I recently attacked a fort and a royal knight unit was victimized from arrows and arrow towers. He went from 20 men to 7 and the unit never entered combat so did not kill anyone.
His valor went from 1 to 3!!
I thought you gained valor from killing as many as possible. I always loved fighting peasants due to the possiblity of gaining a lot of valor.
Valor is determined on a man by man basis. So the arrows probably took out the low valor knights, leaving the high valor ones to give you a nominal "boost" in valor.
This happens a LOT with king/heir units. The king/heir himself is of such high valor (due to his survivability) that when the men in his unit die, you'll get a huge jump in the indicated valor when in truth there was no valor gain at all (just a bunch of dead knights).
It also depends on who you kill...
A king is worth about 50(!!!) normal men... The man killing him will without a doubt jump several ranks.

BTW, Danish Crusades are true to history.
You may not care about war, but war cares about you!
