Hi everyone!
What´s your view about the usefulness of gothic sergeants. Are they worth getting? At a first look they seem to be too few(60) to be any good compared to other spearunits. I know the supportcost is fairly low and that they have a bit better stats, but they will also cost a lot in infrastructure.
They OWN !!
They simply won´t die ... use them to hold your side of a bridge and all you need is enough Archers to pepper the enemy. They are idea for defense in cold temperate Provinces.
That is also what Footknights are for ... to take or hold a bridge. I love heavy Infanterie ... when you use them the right way, they won´t let you down. Don´t make them run tho ... rather make the enemy run towards them. They make excellent Garrisons !

Havent used them all that much... but they seemed great when I did. Certainly worth having as a main foot troop if you can spare the cash.
Waste of money in MP. Better off with order foot.
From my experience, it's true: they just don't die. Also, if you ever encounter them on the enemy side, just watch how many of your cavalrymen will they take with them when they rout.

I think they do very well as secondary flank troops in MP. Try using Orders as your first line and keep 1 unit of Gothic Sarges on each flank. Try and see if any cav or anything else'll get past that.
Although I have to admit that the Halberdiers may be a better choice in some battles. The battles I refer to is where the flank protectors have to take the role of flank attackers, in this case Gothic Sarges do not have the attack capacity of Halberdiers and may IMHO often perform unsatisfactorily when compared the Githic Sarges.
In SP, they are rock solid as the AI usually does not have the rush menatality of the MP games and takes you on bit by bit (most of the time). Also u alwasy know the composition of the AI's armies in neighbouring territories, and thus tend to modify your Sarges (all kinds) balance accordingly.

I think its an issue of diminishing returns. Heavy infantry are nice, but so are regular old spearmen. For multiplayer, cheap units that are buffed seem to be the rule of thumb. (perhaps something that should be tweaked) Also, 100 man sized units are awefully important I think. If the spear wall wasn't so powerful then I'd say maybe theres room for another defensive unit, (ala goth sarges), but spear walls do just fine in my experience.
