View Full Version : What is the formula for determining unit costs in EB?

This includes upgrades. I noticed that the odd variations on weapons and armor upgrade costs have yet to be dealt with. For instance, it costs 40 to upgrade the armor of Polybian Triarii buy 697 or thereabouts to upgrade the armor of Camillan Triarii.
Please do not crucify me if this question has been asked before. I searched the forum before posting this thread and found nothing that answered my question.

I have no clue on upgrades, but isn't recruiting cost typically 4x the upkeep cost?

Yeah, that's right and the upkeep cost, hm, let's see, ah yes, a quarter of the recruiting cost! So, is the question answered? :laugh4:
The basic recruiment cost is detemermind by a few thing:
first we have a base cost for levies, proffesional warriors, elite units,... for exampl 0.8..
every piece of armour (shield, helmet, greaves,...) has a set cost variable, for example a cuiras costs 0.7 (this is different for every piece of equipment)
Than the corst of a horse/chariot is added (also differs from types of horses, an unarmoured horse for example costs 1)
Then every weapon has it's own cost. An overhand spear costs 0.05.
Certain special bonusses like a high skill level can also have an additional cost.
All these are counted together then multiplied by the number of men and a standard value (let's call it 'k'). Certain factions get bonusses on specific units, for example the sarmatians get a 30% discount on horses.
Now as you can see the cuiras has a cost of 0.7 this amounted with the helmet, greaves,... multiplied by the number of men multiplied by k > 0.05 multiplied by the number of men, multiplied by k.
Which is realitic too. Improving a bunch of spears is rather cheap compared to improving a whole set of (heavy and high quality in this case) armour.
hope this helps.

About the Saka and Sauromatae horse discount, how does it work? I didn't notice anything in that direction when playing Saka.
You pay the full amount, and get reimbursed by script.

Thank you, that's nifty.

Makes sense. Guess I'll have to research the price of the equipment on my new units.
@Bovi: The script reimburses my payments on armor/weapons upgrades? What percentage am I reimbursed? And why aren't the payments just set to 0 in the first place?
bovi was talking about the horse discounts for the nomads.

Oh.
Well does anyone know why, for some units, armor upgrades cost as much as an entire unit by itself? It simply ruins the armor/weapon upgrade system and makes it not worth it IMO.
In this case it means that either most of the unit cost is caused by it's equipment. Or it gets some sort of bonus in it's recruiting cost. And possibly a mistake has been made with some units. (That can happen when you have to calculate the costs and stats of many units.)
Also if you need specific questions for an EB mod or something about stats, you can ask me (pm). While I haven't been the offcicial statter, I think I'm the one most familiar with the system that is left.
