View Full Version : a couple of questions.
My acer has problems. If it runs too long or too frequently, all windows programs will sieze up, loop, and just plain crash. My question: WTF?
Also, do the Total war eras versions of Medieval and shogun work well on a computer with modern settings?
Your Acer could be experiencing heat problems. A slow buildup of temps would match what you're describing. When's the last time you pulled off the case and went over it with a can of compressed air?
Getting MTW and STW working on the newest systems is supposed to be a bit of a black art, one which I haven't tried. I hear the Nvidia drivers don't play nice with some older games, but I'll wait and see if some who has, you know, knowledge wants to chime in.
The biggest question is going to be what kind of video card you have, and possibly which drivers you're using for it. The Nvidia 8800 is the worst of them all -- no one has yet managed to figure out how to get MTW to run with it (at least not that anyone's admitted so far) -- and the whole 8000 series in general has been known to give people trouble, although there are a couple solutions that have worked for some people.
If you *do* have an Nvidia (and and it's not the 8800), I urge you to check out this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=79500) in the Main Hall, if you've not already done so. One of the simplest solutions for a lot of people (including myself) was to just roll back to an earlier set of video drivers. You might not necessarily have it that easy, of course, but it's still worth taking a look.
I have an ATI something or another.
I dusted my computer a couple weeks ago. I think it very might well be the heat, Thank you.
A question for Martok, will these older drivers still permit me to play the newer games I mod on?

That's a little trickier to answer, since I'm not a modder myself. What I *can* tell you is that I've not had any problems running my newer games with the older drivers, at least thus far. [Martok knocks on wood and keeps his fingers crossed] :sweatdrop:
I will, however, also add the caveat that most of my games don't really tax my video card that heavily -- I don't own a lot of graphics-intensive titles. What few *do* tax it, though, run on my PC without any major issues.
So to answer your question in a nutshell: Yes, you'd probably be okay, but I can't say for certain. I apologize that I can't give you a more definite answer than that. :embarassed:

Thank you for the help.
Well I'm not sure how much I was able to truly "help", but you're welcome nevertheless.
Also, in the future, you might have better luck asking this sort of question directly in the Main Hall/Sword Dojo. Folks capable of answering such questions -- most of them far more knowledgeable than myself -- are more likely to notice them there. (That's only a suggestion, though.) ~:)

I put it in here to ask what was wrong with my computer...the other question was an afterthought. But I will heed your advice. (and I have a sneaky feeling I will hae to use it...though I truly hope that I do not...)
